traditional vs modern names

I am a fan of modern unisex names but DH likes more conventional names. We are expecting a baby girl. He wants to call her Charlotte Felicity as it sounds cute and means "free and happy" together. I love the meaning but seems a bit too traditional to me and too girly. His other options are Annette, Grace, and Jasmine, all of which are not my taste. Names I like would be like Riley or Lulu and I love the idea of a middle name like Hope and Peace but we have a one syllable surname so might not flow well.

As someone who has a variance of a very popular name, dont do it!! Its been the bain of my life, always having to correct people and spell it out!

As a guy the few girls names I really like are Chloe and Sophie also Jaclyn, as in jaclyn smith, Charlie's angels fame. Phew. Actually Charlie's nice too. 🙂

Please don't mangle the spelling.

The U isn't necessary for you to use the nickname Lulu.

Fwiw, I like Charlotte Hope.

How about a compromise? He chooses the first name and you choose the middle name?

CH is a nicer set of initials than CF.

You could save Felicity in case you have a second girl later.

I agree with the compromise but then we have a single syllable last name so can't really have a one syllable middle name to flow nicely.

I actually like Charlie as a unisex name but DH thinks its too boyish.

Nah, Charlie is lovely, I really like it. Not boyish at all. All the best.

fizzandchips · 10/11/2024 06:19

if you name her Charlotte, you could use the nickname Charlie which suits both your criteria.

usernother · 10/11/2024 06:19

I think the title to this thread should be changed to traditional vs daft names.

The middle name is so rarely used, I wouldn't let that turn you off. Charlotte Hope Smith sounds lovely.

Mozartine · 10/11/2024 06:23

I’d agree with PP. you have no taste whatsoever. Please. One of the best things you can do for your child is let your husband take the lead on this. Don’t fail her before she’s even born.

I actually prefer Felicity as first name, I am not a fan of any of those names but also like Lauren.

What about Felicity Charlotte?

What about Felicity Charlotte?

The two names together is too long in my opinion.

Charlutte would sorry be mean to name a girl.

In everyday life would it mean anything?

No but it sounds too classic.

Better than Charlutte tbh.

Yes I don't like that idea anymore. I also like Pearlie.

Well this is all a matter of personal taste, but I agree with your partner.

I would pick "too classic" over "Charlutte" or Riley or Peace any day of the week.

If your child has a classic name and decides they want a more edgy nickname, that will most likely happen naturally. They'll either come up with an original diminutive for their actual name, or they'll call themselves a completely different nickname. (I know someone who has been known as Tiger for most of her life.)

But if your child is named Peace or given a wacky spelling of a traditional name, that's more likely to be a complete pain in the bum for them. They'll spend their whole life correcting, explaining and dealing with assumptions other people have made about them based on their name.

Felicity Hope is nice.

JollyGreenSnake · 10/11/2024 06:40

Agree with PP. Your daughter does not need a "modern" spelling of a pretty name as something she'll have to deal with throughout her life. I meet a lot of people in my work and when we see the "modern" spellings/ some of the names, we think "poor person. Their parents must be idiotic/ completely insensitive."
Don't do this to your child.

TheLoyalWriter · 10/11/2024 02:52

I am thinking of making Charlotte Charlutte with the nickname Lulu? I also like Charlotte Hope but he is pretty set on Felicity.

Charlutte is just silly. If you spell it Shaérrlôtt that would be unique and classy.

I know now I am not going to name her that. I was partly joking.

Tallulah for lulu?

Lauren is good name :D

Lulu L'wren?

I have a traditional girls name for DD but I like the more cool unconventional names.
If dh likes traditional names how about a shorter traditional name like Sadie or Edie? Charlotte Felicity is quite long and nicknames for Charlotte will be lottie or Charlie, even with a U not O spelling (which will drive her nuts correcting) lulu is a stretch.

Aydel · 10/11/2024 07:02

Pearlie? As in the Kings and Queens? 😂

I meant Lulu as the given name. The shorter traditional names are not my taste either.

The problem with Lulu as a given name is that she can't do anything with it if she doesn't like it.

Using your own spellings for children's names is chavvy, down market and suggests at an element of illiteracy on the part of the parents
