I genuinely don't understand why anyone would vote for Trump

If you're American and voted for him or would have voted for him if you lived there can you please explain why?

OP posts:
username7891 · 06/11/2024 19:15

The economy and immigration.

Errors · 06/11/2024 19:16

I want to understand this too but mainly because I know people in both camps. I don’t know any Trump supporters per se, but I have heard some say he was the least worst option. Something to do with the democratic process in the US?? But I don’t understand it and didn’t want to ask 😂

Witchcraftandhokum · 06/11/2024 19:16

Apologies, completely missed that thread!

Also, could someone explain the senate etc in the simplest if terms ☺️🤭🤭

iamtheblcksheep · 06/11/2024 19:19

In summary:

People have voted for Trump because they are struggling with the cost of living and are more interested in feeding their families than a war thousands of miles away. Trump will end aid to Ukraine and he’ll want his equipment back. Immigration is a huge issue with many high profile horrific crimes being committed by illegal migrants.

Kamala was more interested in providing gender reassignment surgery for prisoners and letting migrants cross the border in a free for all.

In British terms your senator is your mp representing your constituency or in US terms your state.

The House of Representatives are your local councillors. In US terms your district.

tarheelbaby · 06/11/2024 19:25

Re: the senate - In the US, 'parliament' is known as Congress. There are two parts.
One part, the senate, has 2 representatives per state. They serve a 3 year term so every year 33% of the senate comes up for re-election to keep things turning over (in theory).

The other part of Congress is the House of Representatives ('the House') This is decided by population of a state. So states with loads of residents (e.g. NY) are entitled to more representatives. The representatives come up for re-election every 2 years so there is turn over in the House but not at the same time/rate as in the senate.

Both groups, senators and representatives vote at the same time and with the same weight on proposals which might become laws, similar to votes in UK Parliament. And in the same way, congresspeople are encouraged by their parties (Democratic/Republican) to vote the party line.

I don't claim to be an expert but as I understand it they elect representatives to two law-making bodies, the House of Representatives and the Senate. There are more Representatives than Senators and the Senate is the upper chamber. Each state elects a certain number of each. Each state also has its own legislature and Governor, also elected, who decide laws that only apply in that state. The President is the Head of State, i.e. the most powerful person in the whole of the US (in theory). He can propose legislation but it has to be approved by the Senate and the House of Representatives, and for as far back as I can remember that's been a problem for Democrat Presidents. Less of a problem for the Republicans as they have a majority of Senators (this time, anyway).

The Speaker of the House of Representatives would take over as President if both the President and the Vice-President died or otherwise became incapable of carrying on, so is a very important person indeed.

Willyoujustbequiet · 06/11/2024 19:27

In summary there are a lot of racist, misogynistic Americans who are happy to turn a blind eye to felony and support sexual abusers.

Some not very nice people really.

Appalonia · 06/11/2024 19:27

I posted this on the other thread. From Twitter:

"I know a lot of people who voted for Trump. Let me tell you their reasons.

They wanted a return to normalcy. Gender ideology is just too out there. They want to protect women and children.

The economy has been disastrous for them. They didn’t have a cushion to absorb the inflation. They are cutting out everything in their lives just to afford food. And some are cutting that out. Their lives have gotten very small. When they tried to tell you, they were told they shouldn’t splurge on things like a frozen pizza.

They see people coming illegally into this country and being handed stuff. Their stuff. Their money is being handed over. They have nothing. They watch as others are just handed more than they have.

They can’t afford rent and don’t know what to do. More people fighting for the same housing units makes prices rise.

They see a frightening turn towards censorship. They value the first amendment. Remember, it’s very important.

They are so tired of being lied to and called terrible names. Every time the mainstream media made up a story to make people hysterical they rolled their eyes. This pushed more and more people away. They stopped having any faith in the media. A firing squad? Really? 🙄

They feel the hysteria is toxic and frightening. Again they want this all to calm down.

They watch as political protests are punished for only one side.

They see crime running rampant.

They see the people who try to protect us from crime being punished. The criminals go free to re-offend.

Essentially, they want their children to be healthy, they want their family to be fed, they don’t want endless war, they want things to be fair, they want the bad guys punished and the good guys appreciated, they want to protect women and children.

I hope if you are frightened today you will hear me. I hope I can help you see that things are not dire. I hope I can help you see that these were regular everyday folks who want regular everyday things. Food, clothing, shelter, privacy, respect for boundaries.

That’s it. Just those things.

Peace. "

Because people hate trans people more than they care about women bleeding out from miscarriages and dying on hospital floors while being denied care.

Or any of the other excuses they make, I don't care, they do not respect women.

hopeishere · 06/11/2024 19:30

Although confusingly each state also has an elected upper and lower house as well. State representatives. Plus they send reps to Washington (not the same ones as honest in the state legislatures).

They also have Governors and loads of other locally elected appointments.

I don't think that's quite right. In the UK the upper chamber is the House of Lords, which isn't elected, and the lower chamber is the House of Commons. Councils only set policy for their local area so they are equivalent to the state legislature in the US, or the local townships. They elect everyone over there, down to the town ratcatcher and the local judges.

tarheelbaby · 06/11/2024 19:31

The US populace has voted for Trump because ...

  • he is charismatic and delivers his lines well
  • more of them than anyone wants to admit support the republican party's fundamentalist values
  • just like in the UK, people are scared of taxes and the republican party is anti-tax, anti-funding

And many more horrific crimes committed by "Americans".
But that's ok isn't it?

I was trying to be really simplistic. It is more complicated than what I have written. This was the cliff notes version.

You cannot control your citizens. You can only punish them for the crimes they have committed as they occur.

You can control the crimes of illegal migrants by not allowing them to cross the border in the first place.

Fraime Ubaldo And his whole family were murdered in New York by an illegal migrant. This could have been prevented. A 12 year old girl was murdered in Houston by two illegal Venezuelan’s. Tell me when to stop.

Yes same reason he got in in 2016, far right sentiment sweeping the west. We'd still have had Tories in if they hadnt turned on Bojo then Truss fked it up.

MumOfOneAllAlone · 06/11/2024 19:56

Thanks to the previous posters, I think I get it now

Us government has three branches:

Judicial - republican, 6 of 9 supreme court judges

Executive - trump

legislative - congress which has two parts
Senate - republican
House of representatives - still being decided

So it seems like republicans control all three branches of government allowing them to pass bills quickly

A great election for the republicans

🤭🤭 sorry for being slow xx

Crimes by Americans are ‘baked in’ but every woman killed by an illegal immigrant last year (Laken Riley, Joycelyn Nungaray, Ruby Garcia, Rachel Morin) was a death that, by definition, should never have happened.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 06/11/2024 20:05

What don’t you understand? God knows I can’t stand Trump, but he knew how to appeal to the majority of ordinary Americans, many of whom are struggling with the cost of living, same as many on this side of the pond.

MoanyPony · 06/11/2024 20:07

From Appalonia's Post on Page one:

they want the bad guys punished and the good guys appreciated

Trump is a bad guy.

He is being rewarded, that horrified me and the rest of non-america.
