I genuinely don't understand why anyone would vote for Trump

If you're American and voted for him or would have voted for him if you lived there can you please explain why?

OP posts:
MoanyPony · 06/11/2024 20:09

he is charismatic

Oh wow, is that what passes as charisma these days??!!

Viviennemary · 06/11/2024 20:10

Because they think he will do a better job than Kamala Harris. It's that simple. And he has been President so has the experience.

MoanyPony · 06/11/2024 20:10

MoanyPony · 06/11/2024 20:14

Trump supporters on this thread are failing miserably to justify their choice.

He was president before????

Y'all need a serious education boost. She was not much of a contender but your guy is an ill educated ignorant dangerous tumour on earth. A mushroom would gave been preferable.

VeryQuaintIrene · 06/11/2024 20:14

The economy was far and away the most important thing and people blamed the most recent administration for it (as was probably the case in 2020). Never mind that there was a pandemic and the expensive effects of climate change. People don't think in a very joined-up way when their wallets are hurting badly. I get it, sort of, but if they think they are likely to be better off under Trump et al, it's going to be a rude awakening. If I were a betting person I'd put a lot of money on the Dems for 2028.

HuckleberryBlackcurrant · 06/11/2024 20:14

I'm a British living in the US. I think Trump is an awful person, but I think the policies that Harris endorses are worse than his policies. I'm also pro life so that's a huge issue that Trump is better on IMO.

Also, people are in the US are tired of being called racist and told we should feel guilty by dint of their skin colour, and Trump pushed back against that.

Everything is so polarized here, it's really awful. It may as well be 2 countries at this point. There is no dialogue to be had, each side hates the other so much.

I think Trump personally is not a good person, but I think he will be better for the country with his policies. Look at the stock markets this morning. He will be better with Israel, better on the border. Ukraine remains to be seen.

Kamala Harris is unlikeable and there is a widespread perception that she slept/finagled her way to the top and didn't earn her success.

I live in a very Republican area, full disclosure. I did not vote (not a citizen).

I'm about as far from a trump supporter as you could get, but I feel like this post and the whole tone of it proves the point perfectly, without meaning to. You've had loads of posters explaining dispassionately and articulately why people have voted for him, and instead of engaging with them, you've sneerily dismissed them without even seeming to have bothered to read their points properly. It's exactly like Brexit. As a lifelong leftie, I despair of this lazy, smug superiority.

HuckleberryBlackcurrant · 06/11/2024 20:18

I think it's interesting people in the UK are so widely stunned. In the area I live, people have been expecting Trump to win, but I suppose it's all dependent on what you consume.

HuckleberryBlackcurrant · 06/11/2024 20:20

@Tophelleborine

I think you expressed it very well. A lot of people where I live (Idaho) feel that the condescending attitudes of those in more liberal areas and the media just cements them in their desire to back Trump, seeing they are looked down upon and considered hateful and uneducated by 'the establishment'.

Appalonia · 06/11/2024 20:20

Just want to say, I'm not a Trump fan, like everyone, I'm just trying to understand what has gone so wrong in America, that, even with all that we know about him, a majority of Americans have voted for.him.

Trump makes my skin crawl, but one of the FIRST things Biden did, was to enact a policy allowing men who had committed horrific crimes against women to be housed in female prisons. To me that is so immoral and cruel and I've never been able to understand why that was such a high priority.for him. So, I don't hold Biden in high esteem either...

HuckleberryBlackcurrant · 06/11/2024 20:22

The attacks against Trump have been so overwrought and ridiculous, that the truth of his personal horribleness has actually been lost in all the hysteria. Normal conservatives are unable to be swayed by anything Trump is accused of because they are so used to hearing endless commentary of how he is the next coming of Hitler.

By being so extreme, the media have given him a Teflon like quality.

Plus the assassination attempt and 'the photo' made a HUGE impact, IMO.

CharSiu · 06/11/2024 20:23

I haven’t explicitly asked but I know my now American citizens brothers will have voted Republican. They don’t like tax, they pay a lot already and that’s the bottom line. They very much made it from a poor background and would say they view people that unless they are severely ill or disabled as lazy. They also don’t believe in critical race theory, they are not white and made it.

dorabora · 06/11/2024 20:23

I don't know much about us politics but I do know that Biden was basically senial and that he shouldn't have been in charge of a country. Trump is funny to look at, been shot at, is a celebrity basically and is now president, again. And we moan about boris lol

doing his work for him. For shame.

You took the words out of mouth! I guess you could say he’s got character, but not a decent character in my opinion. Maybe people think he’d charismatic. That would be like saying Farage was charismatic. People seem to want someone who is a bit out there, but then don’t be surprised when he talks a load of rubbish. Let’s see if he delivers on his promise. Fuel and food costs are high the world over. I’m just grateful i’m not an American, especially glad given i’m female

HuckleberryBlackcurrant · 06/11/2024 20:28

I said that was the perception here. I think she has worked hard, but she definitely got her start with a boost from her affair partner.

For the record, I think Trump's behavior towards women is vile.

BloodandGlitter · 06/11/2024 20:29

@HuckleberryBlackcurrant how many children have you adopted?

Hilarious anyone can say that about Kamala isn’t it and not a word about Donald’s sexual history / crimes. When a woman does well, other women love to accuse them of sleeping their way to the top. Disgusting attitude

In British terms your senator is your mp representing your constituency or in US terms your state.

The House of Representatives are your local councillors. In US terms your district.

Edited

I’m sorry to be pedantic but this is not correct. The Senate is the Upper House of the national legislature. The equivalent body in the UK is the House of Lords. The House of Representatives is the lower house, the equivalent of the House of Commons they serve at national level. The systems are so different that they operate really differently though. There are also state legislatures that operate at state level.

In summary there are a lot of racist, misogynistic Americans who are happy to turn a blind eye to felony and support sexual abusers.

Some not very nice people really.

In summary this post is exactly why he Is elected today.
Demonising and labelling of 71 million Americans who have different priorities and perspectives with absolutely no attempt to understand their position by a smug ideologically driven elite. Of course there are a core who fit the description of this poster but they don't win you elections. It's the millions who don't actually care about him being labelled criminal because all the pre Trump 'respectable', 'honest' politicians over their lifetime weren't that, just more respectable crimes, and they never changed anything for them anyway. Any questioning of a progressive liberal agenda being shut down because you are either with us or dumb and ignorant.
They found some hope of change in Trump and are prepared to ignore his obvious character flaws.
For a cohort who call the opposition uneducated and stupid, the Liberal left are very slow at understanding the realities of elections. The same is happening in Europe but they think the argument will be won by labelling everyone far right, closing all debate, cancelling people who are not with them, and driving ideological change without societal consensus. It's literally never worked in history and it won't again.

HuckleberryBlackcurrant · 06/11/2024 20:34

Think you responded to the wrong person? I didn't anything about adoption.

This bar is so low

It baffles me why anyone would vote for Trump but he does deliver his lines well if you are dumb and can’t cope with more than soundbites. Kamala was too smart for many.
