Given that Trump is elected.

OP posts:

I’d possibly avoid the US for the next few days, but otherwise go.

Work trip tomorrow <bites nails>

Maybe, unreasonable, but feels very unsafe. Very unwelcoming, very divided.

Not a country I want to spend time in.

Doesn’t seem divided to me. Seems like they are all pretty united.

Getonwitit · 06/11/2024 09:42

FFS, talk about over reacting.

RichPetunia · 06/11/2024 09:43

Rather extreme reaction by the OP. I've just returned from the Bavaria region of Germany and can highly recommend. Perhaps she'd want to try there instead?

101Nutella · 06/11/2024 09:45

YANBU- I’d be worried about a bit of unrest initially which is a bit more serious there given they have the right to bear arms.

and following on from that, it’s whether certain sectors of society will be emboldened to violence or whether they’ll be happy coz they have the leader wanted.

also why give money and support a country with just poor rights for women. So many other countries to visit instead.

a bit put off at the moment. I’d give it a year to see how the dust settles and think again. But obvs I wouldn’t go if I was TTC incase I got in to complications and was denied treatment.

you look at risk of unrest and health provisions with any country you visit for your own safety and unfortunately America is having a race to the bottom so proceed with caution.

ExtraOnions · 06/11/2024 09:45

Millions of Americans are happy to support a sex offender, and give them almost limitless power … I think that says all we need to know about the safety of women in that country

Deja321 · 06/11/2024 09:46

This is so silly and shows the power the media have over people. Do you people normally look deeply into the leaders of every country they visit or their abortion laws? I certainly don't. There's alot of unnecessary scare mongering when it comes to trump.

Bonnyrowantree · 06/11/2024 09:51

Hilarious..why?

Wheresthebeach · 06/11/2024 09:52

Only reasonable if you don't visit any country with a leader/laws you don't like. Which these days...well...would be a bit limiting.

Brefugee · 06/11/2024 09:52

I don't visit countries where i think i may have a problem. I'm not likely to be pregnant so the US doesn't feature in that (nor does Poland etc)

I tend not to visit countries where women are treated differently in law. Afghanistan isn't on my list of go-to destinations, nor any of the countries that enforce hijab or other restrictions on women just because of biology.

But if you want to go to Qatar, Dubai, Saudi etc, have at it. I will judge you though (silently)

anotherside · 06/11/2024 09:56

Country elects scummy politician shocker! He’s no worse than Boris Johnson was, in fact I kind of prefer him.

Poffy · 06/11/2024 10:00

I would never have visited anyway because of guns.
This result just reminds me that we might speak (almost) the same language but Americans are very different from Brits.

Ihopeyouhavent · 06/11/2024 10:02

Wow, what dramatic responses!

ClarafromHR · 06/11/2024 10:06

I really wanted to visit Maine again after many years because I had many wonderful family holidays there. I just can’t do it though. Open and concealed gun carry without a permit is legal. And now Trump again.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 06/11/2024 10:06

I'm going in December for 3 weeks so couldn't cancel even if I wanted to. I'll be watching to see what happens before booking another US holiday but certainly wouldn't cancel anything already booked.

Chattenoire · 06/11/2024 10:09

We're going to LA next year, and we could cancel so we don't give any taxes to his federal government but that seems a bit like an overreaction too.

Although to be fair you just have realised this was a potential outcome when you started planning?

FaceLikeACrackedScreen · 06/11/2024 10:10

YADNBU, I gave up my green card the last time he was elected.

Sarah2891 · 06/11/2024 10:14

You couldn't pay me to go there

anotherside · 06/11/2024 10:16

The US is pretty overrated as a holiday destination anyway. Same size as Europe but with at best maybe 5-10% of the sights.

If that is what you think....

Dontlletmedownbruce · 06/11/2024 10:22

Hilarious thread from someone who had Boris Johnson in power only a few short years ago, who voted for Brexit etc. You know abortion wasn't legal in NI until a few years ago right? Why didn't you leave before then OP? Or are you ok with political divisions and controversial social policies in your own country but only become judgmental when you travel?

You’re thinking of the Other U.S.

berksandbeyond · 06/11/2024 10:24

I would be scared to go if there was even a tiny chance I was pregnant, because if something goes wrong they’d rather I bled out or die of sepsis than treat me because the foetus is more important in their eyes / law.

I do yup! Not 'deeply', but I check for a few things before making a decision on where to travel. Much like @Brefugee said, places where women and girls are legally treated differently, as well as homophobic laws, few other things. If it doesn't check my boxes then I vote with my feet and avoid it. Do I think my tiny protest will make a difference? No. But it's pretty much all I can do, and it's not like it leaves me short on options of alternative wonderful places to visit.
