To cancel plans to visit USA.

Given that Trump is elected.

OP posts:

I'd only cancel if i was going to a state with restrictive abortion laws and i was pregnant or likely to be/get pregnant during the visit (or any other members of my travelling party)

Otherwise, nothing massive will change for tourists

ETA: it is not necessarily about abortions, although i do believe that women should have the choice about their own (reproductive) healthcare.

It is more that if you have any complication (ectopic pregnancy whatever) in a state where abortion is restricted, your healthcare might not be that at all. In fact it might end with your death. That is my worry, not that i, as a visitor to the US, might need an abortion.

sprigatito · 06/11/2024 09:20

Quite. This is the whole nub of the abortion issue. These patriarchal fucks see women as venal, amoral children who would indeed go around gaily aborting late-term foetuses without a second thought if they weren't trammelled by draconian laws.

This. Nails it.

Fangisnotacoward · 06/11/2024 09:23

I wouldn't travel there while he's president. I know it makes absolutely no difference to him or me in real terms.

But I can't face the idea of visiting or spending my hard earned cash in such a place where his behaviour is clearly so approved and applauded by the majority.

Deja321 · 06/11/2024 09:17

Do you really look into the politicians of every country you visit? If you didn't listen to the news you wouldn't be thinking like this. The other politicians are no angels.

Yes, I do. For the same reason I will not travel to Dubai, Qatar, China… I cannot effect political change in these countries but I’m not going to endorse their regimes by spending my hard earned money there.

dottiehens · 06/11/2024 09:16

This type of shit won him the elections. They overkilled the changes but spouting this.

Why do you think so many of his former supporters have warned against re-electing him?

If those who worked with him closely consider him to be dangerous, do you think they should not warn the electorate?

Trump didn't win because of these warnings, he won in spite of them. And history will judge.

BlueLimeRun · 06/11/2024 09:24

I agree, it definitely feels less safe, people are emboldened by Trump - guns, behaviour, racism, misogyny..

That’s only an option for affluent women. Poor women don’t have that option.

Studies since the overturning of Roe have indicated that it will have more of an impact on poor black women as their access to reliable contraception is already inadequate. And the poor get poorer………….

295bkq · 06/11/2024 09:26

This country is also very divided.

1 in 5 voted Labour
2 in 5 voted for another party
2 in 5 didn’t vote

so that’s pretty divided

unless you think you’ll end up in a situation needing some sort of maternity/gynae care, I’d still go.

Of course it does. Affluent women will still get care—they can fly out of state for treatment. Poor women can’t. Then they will be shamed for “having more kids than they can afford.”

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 06/11/2024 07:48

Yanbu at all. I wouldn't be setting foot in a country that had just elected a leader with fascist tendencies.

Really? So you won’t be going to Budapest, Prague, Italy, Croatia, Switzerland, Turkey or most counties in the Middle East?

Rosscameasdoody · 06/11/2024 09:30

SweetBobby · 06/11/2024 09:09

Nothing has changed. Donald trump does not make the abortion laws. Each state decides for themselves.

And who do you think facilitated that with the appointment of three of the six republican Supreme Court judges who voted to overturn Roe v Wade, thus turning the decisions over to individual states ?

dottiehens · 06/11/2024 09:30

Rosscameasdoody · 06/11/2024 09:17

Don’t understand your question. The poster thought it was bizarre that someone wouldn’t want to travel to the US if they were pregnant. I was explaining why. It has nothing to do with Trump being elected, if that’s what you mean, but that wasn’t the question. Republican states in the US are definitely not the ideal place to be if you’re pregnant, whatever the government colours of the day.

Edited

I had an all nighter so bear with me. If people were travelling to the US from 2022 the laws on abortion are the same then and now. The fact he won wouldn’t affect what was already decided by the supreme court.

I'm sure the country will be plunged into financial ruin Hmm
Honestly, what ridiculous over reactions on here. Some of you need to grow up.

You are spectacularly missing the point. I don´t travel to certain countries as I don´t like their religion, and don´t spend money in regimes that impose the death penalty. Those are my red lines. Whether those countries will care, will be in financial ruin or not, is irrelevant.

Ghosttofu99 · 06/11/2024 09:31

It will definitely be less stable there now. I don’t know if anyone watched Storyville: War Game (available on iplayer) but people on all sides of the political spectrum have been preparing for scenarios worse and more well planned than what happened during the Capital riots.

It's good news for women, now that we will have the definition and safeguarding back.

World war was on the cards regardless, it's bad news for Europe as Putin will push pass Ukraine.

I guess this is what happens when you let rampant transphobia take over your brain. You stop caring about women.

I get you. But l wasn’t aware that the poster was asking from the point of view of Trump winning the election. I was answering from the point of view that some states in America are definitely not places to visit voluntarily if you’re pregnant.

cardibach · 06/11/2024 09:35

If I had one booked I wouldn't cancel it. However I wouldn't be booking one now. I didn't visit last time he was in either (and I've been more than once, it's not just because I wouldn't have gone anyway).

we were making plans for next October. but was always dependent on a Harris win. genuinely can't comprehend how anyone votes for a rapist

Probably because they don't believe he is a rapist. There have been many outrageous/unproven accusations thrown at trump, the establishment have tried literally everything to take him down. So not everyone believes every accusation thrown at him and see it as a smear campaign.

Hotpinkangel19 · 06/11/2024 09:36

Crazy! Definitely not cancelling trips because of this!

Nothing has changed. Donald trump does not make the abortion laws. Each state decides for themselves.

Donald Trump stuffed the supreme court with conservative judges who overturned Roe v Wade. So he is indirectly responsible.

Accurate definition of a woman and safeguarding concerns are transphobia ?

You may have a definition of a woman but if that woman wants an abortion or medical care for a miscarriage they are out of luck

God some of these posts are ridiculous. You're all panicking over nothing.

Fisharenotfoods · 06/11/2024 09:39

I did just google Disneyland in Tokyo as I wanted to visit anyway but might be a better option than Orlando
