To be so disappointed in people - Trump voters especially

I feel absolutely stunned that despite all that has been said and done Trump is likely to get the chance to make the world burn a little faster.

I am afraid for a future so full of anger and hate.

Disgusting of Thonberry to say that only N Korea and Moscow are happy.

Got any tips on how to do this?

I feel genuinely upset.

An understanding of mindfulness is helpful. You can sit in feelings without them needing to be distressing, you can allow them to come and go without consequence. Identify areas of your life that need to stay separate and acknowledge that anxiety over one doesn’t need to spill into another compartment. It serves absolutely no purpose. Delay your worries when you feel them bubbling up – literally schedule a time. You’re worried about Trump withdrawing support from Ukraine or dismantling Nato or supplying weapons to Russia … tell yourself you will worry about that when it happens.

The democratic primaries chose Hillary Clinton

Yes so like I said - they need to field better candidates.

Preferably ones that don't lie about being under fire.

Or defend their rapist husband in a court of law whilst a 13 year old describes what happened.

Or who worked for those who were against the civil rights movement.

Demographically, Russia is not in a position to invade the Baltic states. And why would Putin want to? This is a popular talking point, but it's extremely unlikely to happen (within the next 50 years or so - who knows what tides will shift after that).

The world has 'supported' Ukraine just enough to draw out the war an inflict maximum harm on that country (and on Russia, to be fair). Should have fully committed to assist or not involved themselves at all. Ukrainians don't want to fight. Time for negotiation, for better or worse. I am disappointed that Harris lost, but at least it may force an end to a pointless conflict.

I hope Russia already is stretched too thin to do any more invading. But then again, if they din’t need to use all their Army in Ukraine anymore, maybe they’ll try it anyway.
I am wondering how far Putin is willing to go for his vision of a Great Russian Empire if he perceives that the US will no longer stand in hus way.

I understand many Ukrainians are fatigued from the war. But will Russia be content with the areas they’ve already taken?

In the USA it looks like they’ll have a near dismantling of the state IF Trump’s promises are anything to go by. So, that will be interesting to see how it pans out. I hope they’ll just continue to plod on. But then again people are hoping for change, and any change seems to be acceptable.

Emily Thornberry?

Par for the course with that one.

I’ve read a lot on here about the belief that Democrats have shut down the conversation and going with a ‘the people who vote Trump are just wrong’ alienates these voters.

Hmmm. I am genuinely trying to understand this. Not sure I could ever choose to vote based on that when Trump is the option.

I’d get that argument if the republican candidate was a half decent human being.

I read about typically Democratic voters not voting Democrat because of Gaza - they didn’t feel they morally could and were putting their vote to other parties/independent or simply opting not to vote. I get voting with your morals.

For this reason I simply don’t understand how you can vote for that man if you have any morals. So I’m more frightened by the self centred voting - nothing seems to be about the greater good.

Does the thinking go like this…

Let the world burn, I just want cheaper fuel.

Let him rape women, as long as it’s not me.

Let him flout the rule of law, it doesn’t really apply to him.

Let him put the state in charge of women’s bodies, and just hope I never need to worry about it for myself/sister/daughter

Let him get into bed with Putin to just boost his own ego (doesn’t even realise he’s being played by Putin), oh and it can affect other countries because it’s far away, and I’ll just hope it doesn’t affect home security

But at least I believe I’ll have more money?????

Whatever the policies were of either candidate, the character of the candidate should matter. It seems to have been lost.

I just see a vile man of few good character traits (if any) just be given the power to press a nuclear button if someone annoys him. He behaves like a child so much of the time. And now there are signs of rambling senility. This is a worrying time for the world. It feels a dark time.

I am mystified at how much gender identity discussions have taken over political debates in the west. I have worked with transgender people in my long career in mental health. We were doing ok and treated people with respect in the 90s and 2000s though of course intolerant idiots have always existed. An issue which affects a relatively small number of people has just ballooned disproportionately.

I am passionate about tolerance and acceptance but perhaps controversially, I think the current preoccupation with gender identity has become really unhelpful for all. And distracting from other important issues in politics.

It's a Trojan horse for mens rights activism. It came in tandem with Incelism.

Incelism came out of the distorted echo chambers of the internet being dominated by disaffected young men at a time where job security and opportunities have been the lowest in decades.

It's a backlash against women - it's blaming women for societys problems instead of political leaders.

Oh so you must have missed the plan for Ofcom to shut down GB News. And before Musk bought X all sorts of people were banned from there (all perceived as "right" including people like KJK). I don't think Musk had banned anyone has he (unless they are breaking the law of course) as he believes in free speech which the left don't for their opponents.

Ofcom aren't planning on shutting down GB News, they're holding them to account when they breach the agreed regulatory standards and placing sanctions on them for doing so. Musk has banned many people from X, particularly journalists who he doesn't like, but as a private forum that's his prerogative, as it was when the platform was more left leaning.

Honestly, the victim mentality of the establishment right, is something to behold. The fact they've managed to convince people that "free speech" means "free to say whatever you want, as long as you agree with me, and any sort of challenge is shutting down debate" is one of the greatest pieces of manipulation we've ever seen.

VeraYin · 06/11/2024 08:49

Thr Democrats ran a very bad campaign and had a very poor presidency with Biden. They only have themselves to blame.

Well Kamala didn’t leave much choice. She’s awful.

I'd take awful over rapist any day of the week.

I guess comments like yours show what people really think of women.

TERFCat · 06/11/2024 08:49

ememem84 · 06/11/2024 07:57

I wanted Kamala to win - and if I could have voted would have voted for her. In my opinion she’s a good role model for women.

but I think I knew trump would win.

How? She doesn't know what a woman is? She's also happy to let men into women's safe spaces! Terrible role model for women.

World War 2 is too far back in the rear view mirror now for too many people. Not everyone studied that perIod of history at school. People have no idea what fascism means and, if they do, they never ever think they’ll be the groups who will be singled out for scapegoating and blame.

Trump is a fascist. If professionals voted for Trump because of what it means to their wallets, they’re just 2024’s equivalent of ‘good Germans’.

if he has won, this will be the last election in the US for a good long while. Think on that. There will be a lot of buyers remorse in the US over the coming years. Maybe they need to raze the country to save the country, to coin a phrase.

"if he has won, this will be the last election in the US for a good long while. Think on that."

Oh come on, this really is ridiculous. Do you really think that he will try to overturn Article Two of the US Constitution?

It's this level of hyperbole that lead many people to disregard what more moderate people on the left are saying.

9021Pho · 06/11/2024 08:50

a white male v black female in a nation that is still widely and openly racist sexist and misogynistic in large swathes of the country it’s was always odds on for the white male

I’m sorry, I’m no fan of Trump but this ridiculous and patently false characterisation of many of the US electorate is exactly what handed Trump this election.

You realise th at Trump had a surge in support amongst black and Latino voters? Are they all stupid?

Reminds me of 2019 in the UK when Jeremy Corbyn’s election campaign delivered to Labour its worst election defeat since 1935. All the Tarquins and Jemimas up and down the country were crying and bleating that “the working classes voted against their interests”. Um, ok. Or maybe they just don’t like being talked down to.

I am of the left and raised on social democratic principles, but this new “contemporary left”/ “progressive left” has lost its way.

andIsaid · 06/11/2024 08:50

SpudleyLass · 06/11/2024 06:47

Democrats need to field better candidates.

And stop insulting the electorate

This is 2016 all over again - they just refused to listen to what people were telling them.

SO true.

Every. Time.

So many people are politically homeless there and they protest vote.

But this sweep is unbelievable.

HebburnPokemon · 06/11/2024 08:50

MargotwithaT · 06/11/2024 08:41

Trump has been President before and the sky didn’t fall in. Nothing is so bad and nothing is so good. Step away from social media and do something positive and within your control. Volunteer, pick litter, create a garden. Make your corner of the world good. It’s all we can do. You can’t control how people vote but you can control your response to it.

Thank you.

I'm autistic so probably catastrophising here. I see Trump's win as a signal that women really are second class citizens, in 2024! No matter what we do, we will always be perceived as second class. Like we're branded from birth. The injustice cuts deep.

Brit in the US:

Over the past 10 years the liberal's have shut down friendly political debate. If you are not a Democrat you are automatically shot down as being a Nazi supporter. This obviously has upset a majority. However they have just kept quiet and nodded along to maintain friendships, saving their true views for the privacy of the voting booth.

You cannot win thoughts and minds by shouting them down and demonizing them.

Well Trump seems to manage it!

Nothatgingerpirate · 06/11/2024 08:51

localnotail · 06/11/2024 08:38

Britain and the US should look back to 1939 Poland and understand why they should prevent Putin winning/ going further. If you think from this perspective, your argument has very little point.

How long exactly should Britain keep preventing him from winning?
I'm Czech, btw.

Gloriia · 06/11/2024 08:51

The Democrats lost this all by themselves by keeping a clearly infirm and incapable leader in place for far too long then panicking and putting Harris in his place far too late.

The Democrats need to stop wheeling all the celebs out declaring they would leave the country if Trump got in. People are tired of being sneered and looked down on by privileged out of touch celebs.

Rightly or wrongly many Americans seem to see Trump as someone on their side and imo the media and the Democrats are responsible for that.

I have to say I fundamentally disagree.

I didn't want Trump to win but for ages I have been saying that the Democrats have been too complacent. They are not engaging with the reasons people are dissatisfied with them. The Democrats are not perfect.

So no I'm not I'm not disappointed with Trump voters. They have the right in a democracy to vote for who they wish.

Being smug and righteous, doesn't win hearts and minds. You'd think they have learnt that by now.

purplepandas · 06/11/2024 08:51

It's a very sad day, I think there are scary times ahead in the US and also across the world.

WhimsicalGubbins76 · 06/11/2024 08:52

It speaks volumes about the majority of Americans. Racist, homophobic, misogynistic bigots-using the label of Christianity to excuse their beliefs.
Voting in trump, willingly, is like us voting in Tommy Robinson and Mr Bean

I hate Trump but I’m kind of glad. America deserves everything they get with him. Good luck to them.

It's not only 'them'

What happens in America affects the rest of the world

And I do fear for democracy with him in power assisted by Elon Musk <shudder>

I wanted to cry this morning
