To be so disappointed in people - Trump voters especially

1000 replies

notsorighteousthesedays · 06/11/2024 06:43

I feel absolutely stunned that despite all that has been said and done Trump is likely to get the chance to make the world burn a little faster.

I am afraid for a future so full of anger and hate.

Hopefully the constant giveaway is gonna end.
By the way, I would like to know, how quickly would Ukraine jump to start supporting Britain?

Britain and the US should look back to 1939 Poland and understand why they should prevent Putin winning/ going further. If you think from this perspective, your argument has very little point.

poppymango · 06/11/2024 08:38

I agree it was a big mistake to have Biden continue on for so long, especially with so much of the media pretending they couldn't see what everyone else so plainly could.

If Harris had been the candidate from the start of this campaign I think the Democrats could have been in with a chance.

SadSadGirl · 06/11/2024 08:39

Caerulea · 06/11/2024 08:24

I don't get that argument at all, Trump simply couldn't have been more unelectable by a sensible public. It's astonishing when you look at all he has said & done that he's got another term.

Unless the Dems fielded a puppy kicking, child fiddling, nazi saluting nutjob wearing a literal straight jacket & a fucking hockey mask wielding a goddamn chainsaw ANYONE was better... Like, anyone!

It's such a weak weak argument to say 'well tbf the Dems were a bit meh 🤷🏼‍♀️'

Yeah, they literally voted for someone who advocates for sexual assault (and does it himself). Is there no minimum requirement of how to behave? I always thought bragging about rape was probably approximately where the line might be drawn, but clearly I'm wrong.

Kamala stood for absolutely nothing. It’s an arrogance to think anyone is entitled to votes just because.

It’s nothing to do with her being a woman, it’s because she is absolutely useless.

This. Inflation has soared under Biden, unemployment has increased, Biden has splurged billions of tax payers dollars and the average American isn’t feeling the benefits. Kamala with her progressive ideas just seems distracted and vague. She has been a terrible VP. It’s no wonder the Dems lost.

HebburnPokemon · 06/11/2024 08:36

Got any tips on how to do this?

I feel genuinely upset.

Trump has been President before and the sky didn’t fall in. Nothing is so bad and nothing is so good. Step away from social media and do something positive and within your control. Volunteer, pick litter, create a garden. Make your corner of the world good. It’s all we can do. You can’t control how people vote but you can control your response to it.

Democrats need to field better candidates.

And stop insulting the electorate

This is 2016 all over again - they just refused to listen to what people were telling them.

The electorate who would rather vote for a self-serving, criminal, sexual predatory Russian asset than a black woman with left-liberal politics?

I can understand Americans looking at the Biden stance on Gaza and feeling conflicted about voting for Harris. But looking at the alternative and thinking "not her, but This Guy"!?

TheKeatingFive · 06/11/2024 08:41

I would sincerely hope that right now, both parties are thinking about how they can field better candidates next time.

That it came down to these two is a very poor indictment of how both parties operate.

HebburnPokemon · 06/11/2024 08:41

No, there should have been a proper contest. She was crowned without being required to discuss what policies she stood for and fight for the nomination. Her record as VP is underwhelming btw.

rainingsnoring · 06/11/2024 07:48

'The failure to try and understand why people are voting Trump will be the downfall of the left'- Exactly.

It's a protest vote. People are unhappy. They are struggling financially. They hate the establishment and Trump cleverly portrays himself as anti establishment (obviously that isn't true). They don't want to vote for the same thing.
This happened when Trump was voted in before and with Brexit here. Labour were also an anti Tory vote rather than a pro Labour vote. They will be out next time.

The Labour win here was a protest vote too.

There was none of the sense of support and optimism of 1997.

That's why the government is pretty damned unpopular already

AlecTrevelyan006 · 06/11/2024 08:26

I consider myself left of centre politically but I am increasingly disappointed that so many people on ‘my side’ proclaim that others who don’t vote as they do are ‘stupid’. It used to be that if you voted differently to someone else that was it. You simply had different views. But nowadays woe betide you vote for the ‘wrong’ person or party because if you do it means you are stupid.

it’s frustrating and doesn’t help anyone in the long run.

Maybe because so much more is at stake now than it was before. America's entire democracy was at stake in this election so it just can't be compared to previous elections. It also seems like people are dead set on voting against their own best interests. I think we will be seeing a lot of complaining in the coming years from people who voted for Trump talking about how they didn't know the country would get so bad, blah blah blah. It's kind of like the pro brexit voters complaining about trade, yes you fucking idiots, that was the most predicable outcome. There needs to be some accountability.

OK as I said earlier. Continue insulting the electorate and we'll see if it works out at any point for the Democrats. It hasn't in the past 8 years but might as well keep giving it the good old college try!

TheKeatingFive · 06/11/2024 08:43

What do you suggest?

YankTank · 06/11/2024 08:44

NotTerfNorCis · 06/11/2024 06:57

Absolutely. Others in the party should have stopped him. He just wasn't in a fit state.

And to be honest, Harris wasn't the best replacement. She didn't shine as VP.

But VPs never shine. Name one “shiny” thing that Mike Pence did. I can only name one—refusing to overturn the election on the Senate floor—that was only at the end as the shit was hitting the fan; not an actual policy during the 4 years of the administration. Can you name any “shiny” things that Joe Biden did as VP? What about Dick Cheney?

This misses the main issue in this election-the economy. Americans voted for the person they thought could reduce their grocery bill. A lot of them believed it was Trump and held their nose as they voted. Issues like Gaza were nothing compared to people wanting to put food on the family table.

I suppose we do have the luxury of sitting back and watching it all unfold, safe in the knowledge that our kids won't die in school shootings, or die when they are refused healthcare for a miscarriage, or die of polio when RFK outlaws all vaccines.

Trump's campaign was pretty much only about hate but it obviously worked.

Agreed, I'm sad for those who wanted this change & now will still suffer due to his hate. A racist, mysogonist, sexist, rapist, felon as president over Kamala is shocking to me

Jl2014 · 06/11/2024 08:44

Given America’s woeful position on women’s rights, they were never going to vote in a female president this time round.

Women could have decided this election but I guess it’s not unusual to see the turkeys vote for Christmas.

Having said that, I also do think that the left can push too hard to the left and alienate moderates. Something that the dems (and labour) need to keep in mind.

It would have been unsurprising if she’d lost to anyone other than a glow-in-the-dark, rapist, convicted felon. I think some people are understandably a bit surprised by that.

I’m only surprised the Democrats didn’t learn anything from 2016 and decided to field a woman again. Bad move. Women can’t win in America. If the Dems want to run a woman again, wait until the Republicans do it.

It is because the bottom line for most people is the $/£ in their pocket. The majority of the US and UK population have become poorer in real terms for many, many years. They are not voting for a moral leader. They are protesting and voting against the establishment because this establishment have let them down. Badly.

They were better off economically with Trump?

JRSKSSBH · 06/11/2024 08:46

Combattingthemoaners · 06/11/2024 08:32

How is this becoming increasingly apparent? And why is anyone who doesn’t support Trump on the left? There is a very wide and nuanced political spectrum people are turning into a binary left or right.

Accusations of fascism, racism, bigotry, callousness etc if you admit to being a conservative. I give it extraordinary that anyone asks that question. Watch BBC or Channel 4 and discern the quiet contempt for right wing views. This is one of the reasons why polling often gives the wrong answer. People cba to deal with noisy, opinionated, hate filled liberals. It is so tiresome.

a white male v black female in a nation that is still widely and openly racist sexist and misogynistic in large swathes of the country it’s was always odds on for the white male

This and that:

Biden's selfish initial determination to run for a second term jinxed the chances of a Democratic win

Yes this is so true I’ve been to America many times ( family there ) it always shocks me what I hear on the radio openly rascist comments. When I go
I think oh we are so similar in many ways but when I am actually there at times I think oh my we are so very different.
Especially when it takes a turn in the conversation like endorsing an idiot like Trump or gun laws or against woman’s right to choose it’s mind blowing!
I see Jill Biden wore a red suit ( republican colours) to vote knowing full well the message, she would have been better encouraging her husband to step down and not go for a second term but think she loved the limelight too much, this decision forced them to pick Kamela and America was never ready for that no matter how many celebrities spoke out in her support.

"Where are the moderates????"

I think that we're much more likely to see those next time. Since 1951, US presidents have only been allowed to serve two terms. So Trump can't stand again.

There won't be an incumbent president running next time who drops out at the last minute, and there won't be any former presidents running either. Both candidates will have to go through their respective primaries and, hopefully, stronger candidates from each side will emerge.

I have no idea who these people might be then but at the moment on the Democrat side you've got the likes of Gretchen Whitmer, Josh Shapiro, Wes Moore. If any of them had been put up I think they may have won.

With Republicans, you've got Nikki Hayley, Ron DeSantis, Chris Christie.

I think the next election will be very different indeed.

That makes sense.
