To be so disappointed in people - Trump voters especially

notsorighteousthesedays · 06/11/2024 06:43

I feel absolutely stunned that despite all that has been said and done Trump is likely to get the chance to make the world burn a little faster.

I am afraid for a future so full of anger and hate.

@SpudleyLass "Democrats need to field better candidates."

Because Trump was positively stellar.....

I don't get that argument at all, Trump simply couldn't have been more unelectable by a sensible public. It's astonishing when you look at all he has said & done that he's got another term.

Unless the Dems fielded a puppy kicking, child fiddling, nazi saluting nutjob wearing a literal straight jacket & a fucking hockey mask wielding a goddamn chainsaw ANYONE was better... Like, anyone!

It's such a weak weak argument to say 'well tbf the Dems were a bit meh 🤷🏼‍♀️'

anythinginapinch · 06/11/2024 08:24

It is in the interests of those wishing for power, to keep a large part of the population ignorant and bigoted, in order to have an easy route for fanning their diiscontent and anger into flames at the whim and will of the powerful.

Name me a single country with consistently higher levels of education for its majority, which have had an extremist leader.

It's is far easier to control people's reactions when they operate on sound bites and emotions.

But who made you the arbiter of what is right? I think this attitude has been part of the problem turning US voters off. Their individual opinions matter too and the condescension shown towards them has now reaped predictable results.

Rape is wrong. There is nothing arbitrary about it.

Supporting a rapist is horrific.

Democrats need to field better candidates.

And stop insulting the electorate

This is 2016 all over again - they just refused to listen to what people were telling them.

I think the Democrats do need to find much better candidates. I think Biden won on an anti-Trump vote last time, but choosing Harris as VP was a bad move, she was effectively a wild card appointment after being rejected by the Democrats so early in the race to be their candidate in 2020.The the wild card became the presidential candidate after the Democrats' internal coup. I think that put out the message they can't run their own party efficiently, never mind the USA.
The Republicans also need to find a much better candidate if Trump, his criminal convictions and fantasy world is the best they can offer. But he's been consistent while the Democrat candidates have been on a downward path since Obama.
What a dire choice for the US electorate.

Well said.

I live in Surrey and no-one thinks that Tory vote means your racist, even a Reform will raise eyebrows but a flag waving neo -nazi? Not really,

if you say you support Britain First, they would think your're a racist POS, perhaps going on Tommy Robinson marches would label you as 'radical' and not their cup of tea.

This polarised world doesn't exist in the real world. There's a unreal, online world , where people echo chamber their bollocks to each other that they think this is the real world, it isn't.

I am absolutely sick of this rhetoric. The left are not to blame for anything.

Wanting a more equal society, where everyone, regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, nationality and status is treated fairly is not woke. Wanting to ensure the planet and all it's inhabitants aren't exploited and decimated for the benefit of a few isn't woke. Both of those should be everyone's aim, yet here we are pursuing isolationism, xenophobia, bigotry, racism and elitism at the behest of rich, elitist men.

The left, here and abroad, have tried to explain time and time again why the issues working class natives face are not the fault of the equally downtrodden and working class migrant, but they don't want to hear it. Far easier to blame an asylum seeker for "getting all our money" than to accept that the elitist man they voted for lied.

If they don't want to listen to reason because they're wedded to the idea that "elitist man has my best interests at heart" despite all evidence to the contrary then that's on them, not the left.

Yes, exactly this, thank you.

Well there was always a 50/50 chance trump would win from the outset and a white male v black female in a nation that is still widely and openly racist sexist and misogynistic in large swathes of the country it’s was always odds on for the white male - the US is a completely different beast to the UK there’s little in the way of ‘moderate views’ and they are fervent in their core beliefs.

"...and they are fervent in their core beliefs."

Yes, I totally agree. I always recommend people read John Sopel's book "If only they didn't speak English". It really opened my eyes to how these core beliefs (e.g. right to choose, gun control, etc.) really influence voting in the States.

I agree, I don’t support him at all, I’m speculating about why the vote has gone the way it seems to have done.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 06/11/2024 08:26

I consider myself left of centre politically but I am increasingly disappointed that so many people on ‘my side’ proclaim that others who don’t vote as they do are ‘stupid’. It used to be that if you voted differently to someone else that was it. You simply had different views. But nowadays woe betide you vote for the ‘wrong’ person or party because if you do it means you are stupid.

it’s frustrating and doesn’t help anyone in the long run.

Twiglets1 · 06/11/2024 08:27

AlecTrevelyan006 · 06/11/2024 08:15

I know hindsight is annoying but those years spent claiming Biden was fit enough to complete one let alone two terms were utterly wasted. They needed a proper debate to find a proper candidate.

Totally agree.

So much complacency in allowing Biden to stay as long as he did.

ruffler45 · 06/11/2024 08:27

Its the will of the people - thats how democracy works...get over it

Do you prefer a puppet run by some unknown unelected people?

ZippyDoodle · 06/11/2024 08:27

Didimum · 06/11/2024 08:21

A big part of me can’t get too het up about this, because I only have so much capacity to absorb worry and panic when the world keeps turning. Over 50% of the electorate have voted the guy in. He’s the president they want. Good luck to them. I feel desperately sorry for the women and minorities of the US but his last term was pretty unremarkable from an international view – mostly hot air and 4yrs of rambling that he’d do things that he never did. I don’t think he’s got an appetite for significant foreign policy, he just wants to control the American people.

Yes, there was a lot of incoherent rambling about NATO, Putin, Tehran last time he was in office. That's what the US voters should be concerned about but the country as a whole are so insular they don't understand the implications of this for the rest of the world.

Be prepared for turbulent times ahead.

thepariscrimefiles · 06/11/2024 08:28

Fridaysgirl17 · 06/11/2024 07:45

This is my attitude this is what they wanted, they need not complain when they can't access health care, when he doesn't save the economy, when he imposes tariffs which harm their businesses, it's so disappointing esp on the campaign he ran full of hate ,name calling, insults & pettiness

I suppose we do have the luxury of sitting back and watching it all unfold, safe in the knowledge that our kids won't die in school shootings, or die when they are refused healthcare for a miscarriage, or die of polio when RFK outlaws all vaccines.

Trump's campaign was pretty much only about hate but it obviously worked.

viques · 06/11/2024 08:28

I agree, the Democrats need to find stronger candidates. When a woman hating, stupid, lying, racist, convicted felon wins against an honest black woman then you have to ask why, and the main reason apart from the ignorance of many of the voting population, but hey that’s called democracy is that Kamala wasn’t seen as a strong enough candidate, she didn’t come across well. I also agree that unfortunately her sex played a huge part in it, America doesn’t trust women.

At least we know it’s only four years, he can’t stand again. And I hate to pile on the agony, but I hope Trump isn’t felled by bullet or stroke because Vance sounds even worse. 🙁

Another2Cats · 06/11/2024 08:29

stuckinthemiddlewithyou1 · 06/11/2024 07:25

There just has to be better candidates who sit between the two extremes...

It can only come down to money and finances because I absolutely cannot believe that these two, Harris (and Biden to start) and Trump are the best a whole country can produce. It just creates a massive hole in the centre divide that forces people to choose which side of the centre they sit. Where are the moderates????

"Where are the moderates????"

I think that we're much more likely to see those next time. Since 1951, US presidents have only been allowed to serve two terms. So Trump can't stand again.

There won't be an incumbent president running next time who drops out at the last minute, and there won't be any former presidents running either. Both candidates will have to go through their respective primaries and, hopefully, stronger candidates from each side will emerge.

I have no idea who these people might be then but at the moment on the Democrat side you've got the likes of Gretchen Whitmer, Josh Shapiro, Wes Moore. If any of them had been put up I think they may have won.

With Republicans, you've got Nikki Hayley, Ron DeSantis, Chris Christie.

I think the next election will be very different indeed.

TammyBundleballs · 06/11/2024 07:23

I don’t think it is much different at all. If we had a unified right of centre option in a similar vein to Trump at the next GE they too would win a landslide.

Think unified Conservative/Reform with Farage as leader. I don’t think that’s at all likely but it would lead to Labour being totally wiped out and you’d probably see that as being broadly similar to the US situation.

This. I can’t stand Farage but surely people realise if he was leading the Conservatives next time round he’d likely win. I think if Conservatives had been able to merge with Reform and have him as leader they would have won this time around.

He has worked hard to build a persona that connects with people and he makes people feel listened to and considered. He may or may not actually do anything positive for them if he’s ever in power but people need to feel like they are being heard. What’s infuriating with the left is writing people off for being too stupid/racist/whatever other insult to realise they should be voting for Labour or the Democrats. If they’d could stop that and get someone in charge who connected and listened and then explained how they feel like their policies could resolve people’s issues/address their concerns then they could equally have a real landslide victory where they got the popular vote as well as winning the most seats.

viques · 06/11/2024 08:30

I am really worried about what will happen in Ukraine though, Biden had made promises of financial support which I think will be confetti on the White House steps as soon as Trump is back in situ.

Other people may think differently to you and have different plans. I can understand disappointment but anger is Verruca Salt territory.

Not your place to control other people thoughts and emotions, sorry. Also, feeling anger and disappointment is not the same as a having tantrum.

I personally never met anyone happy about Brexit. A lot of people are indifferent, but saying "I benefitted from Brexit" - never happened.

Livelovebehappy · 06/11/2024 08:14

Here we go....the go to accusation on MN when things don't go their way....

It’s not an accusation. It’s a genuine question. And I’ll ask you the same question @Livelovebehappy ; Trump is a racist. That’s not an opinion - it’s fact. There are multiple examples of his racist language and actions. He’s also a misogynist. So - answer the question. What does it say about you that you support a racist and a misogynist?

MargotwithaT · 06/11/2024 08:31

ZippyDoodle · 06/11/2024 08:17

I think it sums up the situation perfectly!

it doesn’t sum up the situation perfectly. It’s incredibly insulting and ignores the many reasons why people make the decisions they do. It’s done so much harm to polarise opinions. Nobody cares what I think though and people will still use it in the future because it’s a catchy sound bite which they think makes them sound clever.

AnotherChildFreeCatLady · 06/11/2024 08:31

American living in the UK here and YANBU. America and the world are truly fucked. Americans seem to be obsessed with their own self destruction and that is exactly what is going to happen. My husband and I were contemplating moving back but now I know I am never going back bc a Trump term isn't just bad for 4 years, the damage he will do is going to ruin America for the next 50.

Now, how do I go about explaining to every international person I meet for the next 4 years that I am not in fact one of the fuckwits who voted for this shit show?

By the way, I would like to know, how quickly would Ukraine jump to start supporting Britain?
