To be so disappointed in people - Trump voters especially

notsorighteousthesedays · 06/11/2024 06:43

I feel absolutely stunned that despite all that has been said and done Trump is likely to get the chance to make the world burn a little faster.

I am afraid for a future so full of anger and hate.

It is important to remember that the majority view is not always the right one. This is one such case.

It's also important to remember that your view might not be the right one either.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 06/11/2024 08:09

@MargotwithaT

Exactly that

Brit in the US:

Over the past 10 years the liberal's have shut down friendly political debate. If you are not a Democrat you are automatically shot down as being a Nazi supporter. This obviously has upset a majority. However they have just kept quiet and nodded along to maintain friendships, saving their true views for the privacy of the voting booth.

You cannot win thoughts and minds by shouting them down and demonizing them.

Exactly! Absolutely agree with this.

MargotwithaT · 06/11/2024 08:10

The tantrums on here after Brexit were something to behold. I’m a lefty remainer but also from a working-class town so understood that people had their reasons to vote leave beyond being stupid. There was a poster who said she and her husband were so angry their colleagues were frightened to speak to them. The anti working-class rhetoric was disgraceful and made me think differently about this site ever since.

turbonerd · 06/11/2024 08:10

The world will be very interesting from 2025. Ukraine will lose to Russia, I Wonder if NATO will respond when Putin invades the Baltic states?
(I hope it’s an IF, not a WHEN, but this will embolden Putin and North Korea).

And it is not just the next four years. Trump promised if he won no-one will need bother to vote again in the US. That is quite the promise.

OvaHere · 06/11/2024 08:10

I think America want perceived strong man leaders who sound decisive, absolute and say they have a solid plan to fix stuff.

It's the Captain America vibe which is what has helped other Presidents win too - Obama, Clinton, Reagan.

I don't see any woman being elected soon, maybe not in my lifetime. Clinton was a better candidate and even she couldn't quite do it. Looking at the results I don't know if any Dem man would have beaten him but it was a mistake to go with Harris. Obama was savvy enough to know this.

Prescottdanni123 · 06/11/2024 08:10

People complaining that Harris' best argument was that she isn't Trump when Trump's best argument in the eyes of his voters was that he isn't a black woman.

Moonmelodies · 06/11/2024 08:11

It will be interesting to see if people who vote against Kemi Badenoch at the next UK General Election will also be dismissed as racist morons.

Apparently Starmer and Trump have had lunch and it went well.

Was this before or after Lammy called Trump a neo-Nazi sociopath?

Are you racist @orangegato ? If not, why are you supporting a proven racist?

Do you really need to ask?

Not into abortion for rape or incest victims or women at risk of dying during their pregnancy huh?

Ukraine is fucked, Gaza is fucked, women are fucked, immigrants (even the ones that voted for him) are fucked.

He's promised 'mass deportations' on day 1. I wonder how that will go?

Savemydrink · 06/11/2024 08:13

Coolasfeck · 06/11/2024 07:17

I think because most of us watch Hollywood movies we see America as a socially liberal nation. However, it’s deeply deeply paternalistic.

How is it in 2024 they still have never had a female leader and many women would rather vote for a rapist and to probably get pardons for rapists and ban abortion than have a female President. It’s absolutely bonkers.

The manosphere will be going into overdrive.

People will blame Harris but deep down they know it’s because they couldn’t handle a female ‘in charge’.

Edited

What a load of rubbish. She lost because she is as thick as a plank. Can’t answer a single question when interviewed (even when she knew what the question would be beforehand). Her stock answer to “what would you do about ………” was Donald Trump did this….. yes but Donald Trump did that….. She never told us, not once, what SHE would do, about anything.

The passage of time, what has been blah blah Why would anyone vote for her?

Outandinbout · 06/11/2024 08:13

silentwallflower · 06/11/2024 08:05

You do know plenty of people fighting in trade unions and on the streets you talk about are WHITE WORKING CLASS. Many of those who are fighting for the working class have long left the Labour party.

They have no idea what it’s like to live in an area where there are no jobs, send your child to a school that are overwhelmed with social issues and live somewhere opportunities are scarce.

And Reform leaders do? And Ex City trader, public school educate Farage is the man of the people ...for fucks sake. They see the white working class as useful tools to whip up populist ideas , but they don't give two fucks about them.

Tommy Robinson has more credibility actually coming from the working class but still uses populist bollocks to delude the working class that immigrants on boats are the problem, nothing about the rich who pay no tax and sit back in real power while Farage and Robinson ensure they divide and rule- woke vs anti-woke and other meaningless bollocks

You've just unwittingly illustrated how the mentality of the left allows people like Trump and Farage to gain traction.

You just carry on insulting your opponents when they raise the concerns voters are facing. That works really well.🙄

I also worry about Gaza (not that Harris was clear about her intentions) ... the future is bleak indeed.

Harris was very clear about gaza when asked 'Israel have the right to defend themselves' time and time again.

Prescottdanni123 · 06/11/2024 08:13

@turbonerd

This is what worries me. If Putin attacks a NATO country, will NATO wade in without the support of US/the risk of US siding with Russia?

Coolasfeck · 06/11/2024 08:13

Whatafustercluck · 06/11/2024 08:05

People can say "well, it's democracy, people can vote for who they want", and "this is what happens when the left shut down debate" ad infinitum. And they will. But when all is said and done, millions and millions of people have voted for a man accused of rape, accused of vile criminality and open and obvious hatred of homosexuals, people of colour, disabled people, a man who wants to strip women of their rights over their own bodies, a man who does not really see women as people at all. And voting for that kind of man to lead the most powerful nation on earth, who will make the world even more unstable and unsafe in every conceivable way, is unforgivable.

When did ‘the left’ shut down debate? Last time I checked Fox News had a big voice and ‘X’(Twitter) where most of the mainstream press seem to get their stores from is owned by Musk.

This whole ‘the left has shut down debate’ is bollocks and you know it. X etc has poisoned social discourse, Facebook is a sewer, Daily Mail has comments from around the world.

LurkingFromTheShadows · 06/11/2024 08:14

Knot in my stomach as soon as I saw it. It's terrifying people can vote for a candidate who is so undemocratic and immoral. Sometimes I doubt democracy, people are stupid. But what's the alternative? There isn't one.

Startingagainandagain · 06/11/2024 08:14

It is awful news...

I can't say I am surprised though.

But I also do think that Trump appeals to more than just conservative white men.

I saw a documentary on the run to the election where many latinos were interviewed and they supported Trump, mainly because as legal immigrants/second generation they did not want more people coming into the country and also because they prioritised the economy and though life was more affordable under Trump.

I must say that after hearing that I was concerned that Harris was facing a huge battle.

Trump was always going to win. Anybody who thought otherwise really doesn't have an understanding of politics.

I agree with this and also thought Trump would win.

Oh come on! I've seen Democrats being likened to communists too. Have you watched Fox news at all?

I agree with the view that it's a lot to do with racism and misogynism. But also the fact that politics has swung very strongly towards people's feelings and is very influenced by SM sound bites rather than analysis and evidence. Same as Brexit, people believed what was on the side of a bus rather than the evidence from a slew of economists.

Same with Trump. Biden has in fact produced more jobs and Trump has no detailed policies at all but people fall for the rhetoric.

Who are you to decide what is right?

I don’t think it is right to sexually assault women and take away their bodily autonomy when pregnant. In my experience, all decent people agree. If you don’t agree, then I have nothing to say to you.

Mmhmmn · 06/11/2024 08:15

SpunkyKoala · 06/11/2024 06:49

Well there was always a 50/50 chance trump would win from the outset and a white male v black female in a nation that is still widely and openly racist sexist and misogynistic in large swathes of the country it’s was always odds on for the white male - the US is a completely different beast to the UK there’s little in the way of ‘moderate views’ and they are fervent in their core beliefs.

Broadly agree with this except … Brexit .. and if we had different voting system we would have seen more Reform representation. So we can’t be too smug about our modest tendencies esp given the client right wing newspaper media.

Other people may think differently to you and have different plans. I can understand disappointment but anger is Verruca Salt territory.
