To want the fireworks to stop now?

They started here at about 2pm (yes, really!) and haven't stopped since. My cats are hiding and won't eat. I have a thumping headache from the noise and just want some quiet for a bit. They started at the same time yesterday and didn't stop until 11pm ISH.

There is cat shit and dogs barking across my neighbourhood 52 weeks a year. Maybe they have no place in residential areas.

Absolutely agree!

I’d be fine with it if it was only one night. But the fireworks burn a hole on the pocket of the people buying them and they can’t resist letting some off before bonfire night. I’m not annoyed at the tradition, only to the immature knobheads who decide to let them off before/after the actual event. It’s like letting your kids open the Christmas presents early because you’re dying to see the surprise on their face.

FillyourPothole · 05/11/2024 23:50

I haven't heard a single firework tonight.

I live in a fairly big town (90,000) so this is a bit odd.

Perhaps people are finally realising the problems they cause

QuestionableMouse · 06/11/2024 00:55

They've literally just stopped here which is a huge relief.

OP posts:
LineRunnerReturns · 06/11/2024 01:18

We thought they'd stopped but some wag let off an air-bomb type at 01.06

Oh that big man he wants respect with the bang bangs contra the council rules (aka Dave at number 43 who is definitely up on the 'Magner Carter' as per his latest Next Door post)

Duckingella · 06/11/2024 01:20

They've been going off since Halloween because Dawali this year has been 31st-4th November.

It's been a lot quieter tonight where I am than the weekend especially Saturday;on Halloween we literally had them going on from sunset on the 31st until sunrise on the 1st;admittedly that was quite intense.

I suspect we'll have a few here and there over the next couple of nights finishing with more next Saturday as those who missed out last weekend catch up and then hopefully the noisy feckers will disappear until NYE.

crazyunicornlady73 · 06/11/2024 01:20

Somebody let off a massively loud one (or right outside my window?) at 12.45am just as I was finally drifting off to sleep.
Now I'm wide awake again...I'm beginning to really dislike bonfire night!

Peanut2345 · 06/11/2024 02:35

I am grinning and bearing it. 😅

I have really bad issues with noise. I get really aggy and cant cope with it 😅 so not just animals get stressed out. Guessing it's related to autism. The sudden bangs and the loud music, my heart starts racing and feel like my blood boils.
I have slapped on my headphones to sleep with some consistent meditation sounds 😂
I just assume I'm unreasonable.

You're absolutely not U;my DD with ASD has slept so badly this past weekend because of all the fireworks

Laserwho · 06/11/2024 07:47

WonderingWanda · 05/11/2024 22:13

@Laserwho have you quoted the wrong person. I haven't said anything about pets being able to be trained out of their fear. I expressed regret that the op's cats were scared and then shared an anecdote about my very fickle cat who finds the moving of furniture more distressing than fireworks. I would go so far as to say that you can't train a cat to do anything.

I'm sorry yes I did. I'm sorry about that

SabrinaCarpentersCeilingFan · 06/11/2024 08:51

arinya · 05/11/2024 20:21

Dogs can’t be trained once the fear is there. As I just said, our dog was fine for the first 6 years of her life. 2 years ago she stopped being fine and is now frightened. The vet and the dog behaviour therapist we have seen about it have both said the same. You can’t reinforce fear and once they are older you can’t train them out of it.

You absolutely can and it's possible. Maybe not for every dog but it certainly was for mine.

SabrinaCarpentersCeilingFan · 06/11/2024 08:57

Münchner · 05/11/2024 21:06

It's hard to have much sympathy with dog owners who let their dogs shit everywhere so that everyone else can tread in it. The other day there was dog poo in the sandpit at the local playground.
Fireworks are pretty annoying though when they go on for days on end and should probably not be sold to the public and/or restricted to Guy Fawkes and NYE or something.

Yep completely agree. Queue the 'I don't let my cat / dog shit everywhere!'

Well there's certainly enough of it round my middle class market town. I see piles of shit daily. I can tell you now, having myself or my 3 year old step in dog shit the. Traipsing that around and into my home where I have to strip my child off and chuck out a pair of shoes because lazy dog owners can't be fucked to pick up their dog shit, is much more annoying than the general public celebrating festivities for a short amount of time. It's one week out of 52. I'm sure your dog will survive.

It's impossible to go through life without being scared of anything.

SabrinaCarpentersCeilingFan · 06/11/2024 08:59

Coatsoff42 · 05/11/2024 21:27

There’s an anxious dog on our road that barks and barks whenever anyone goes in their garden, and thats ruining the peace 52 weeks a year, I can’t be bothered about a week or so of fireworks, especially when they are so beautiful.

Yep and this! Dogs and shitty owners cause more agg than a week of festivities. The shitty owners don't only practise shitty ownership for one week of the year.

I get a bit fed up.of the pet complaints. No idea about cats but dogs can be trained to deal with the noise.
At the end of the day fireworks existed before people's 3 year old cockawhatever and therefore responsibility falls on the owner

Gundogs aren't a superbreed that are born with noise cancelling ears. I've had two dogs, one a rescue and neither were scared because I trained them. Both were happy to go out for walks and sit and watch the fireworks. There was nothing special about me or them just a bot of training did the trick

It depends on individual dogs.
We live next to a field that has always had massive displays
My old dogs used to watch from indoors- never bothered.

Current dog was absolutely terrified- running back and forth indoors.

She just doesn’t like the fact that the sky was on fire.

She’s not afraid of thunder.
Gunshot is different to a barrage of fireworks.

Distant fireworks are tolerated by her but a massive display is on for Saturday, so not sure how she will cope with those this year compared to last year- hopefully they won’t be too loud.

Horses, cattle and farm animals can also panic with fireworks.
Never mind the wildlife.

Cattery · 06/11/2024 09:27

I wonder if the majority of people setting off fireworks have a clue why they’re doing it. Is the gunpowder plot part of the school curriculum?

JustSaltPlease · 06/11/2024 09:35

Pet owners have 364 days to prepare for the fireworks and always act so surprised and incensed when fireworks start.

I have a puppy, however he seemed unbothered. I did play 30 minutes of fireworks sounds each day on the alexa in October to desensitise him.

however, fireworks should not be available to buy by the public. Organised events only.

About 10 days over Halloween/bonfire night for us so far. The last firework was about 11.30 last night. We were all in bed and finally relaxing after a stressful night.
Then people using up what they bought so it might carry on.
Christmas and new years.

One or two days a year would be fine and manageable. People could medicate their pets for those days. They can plan in advance, go away etc. Some holiday accommodation advertises as firework free.

Random bangs can't be planned for in the same way. People can't medicate their pets 10-15 days a year just in case. It isn't fair or healthy.

This also assumes that the only impact is on pets. Not wildlife, children and adults with neurodevelopmental conditions or trauma.

The impact can be huge and animals die.

No rain here, but there have been several garden displays so far this evening. I hate fireworks, they terrify me.

I could plan/prepare for them if limited to specific evenings, probably by spending the evening and night elsewhere, where I know there will be fewer of them, and where a friend or my boyfriend can help to keep me from panicking. I could also cope with planned organised displays only, as I'd know what time they'd start and how long they'd go on for.

I can't prep for and find it hard to cope with weeks and weeks of them going off every evening, especially the massively loud ones which explode out of the blue, without the warning of the whistling noise you get with old fashioned ones.

CruCru · 06/11/2024 20:04

Honestly? I like festivals where the celebration only happens on the day of the festival. Hallow’een is fine on 31 October but the mad run up to it (with a serious list of activities) is a bit annoying. Some I can get out of, some I can’t.

Guy Fawkes’ night should only be fireworks between 6pm and 8pm on 5 November.

Christmas is only meant to be twelve days from 25 December (although the tree should be decorated on Christmas Eve). Instead it’s a mad orgy of consumption from mid November - no wonder everyone feels fat and boozed out in January.
