To want the fireworks to stop now?

They started here at about 2pm (yes, really!) and haven't stopped since. My cats are hiding and won't eat. I have a thumping headache from the noise and just want some quiet for a bit. They started at the same time yesterday and didn't stop until 11pm ISH.

There is cat shit and dogs barking across my neighbourhood 52 weeks a year. Maybe they have no place in residential areas.

Barking dogs are the result of bad pet owners who shouldn't have pets. Similar principle.

PrimalScreaming · 05/11/2024 20:38

I don't understand why we can't have silent fireworks? I'm sure we have the technology.

Also think it should only be professional displays... given the lack of common sense on display by Joe Public most days I wouldn't trust them with a Sparkler let alone anything bigger.

I saw some film of an owlet in its hollow tree yesterday captured on a wildlife camera in it's nest. Firework went off outside and the poor thing actually shrank back with it's back to the side of the nest and terror on its face.

LostTheMarble · 05/11/2024 20:41

There’s fair compromise to be had - fireworks to be licensed events only. It’s absolutely ridiculous that they can be sold to anyone, the harm and damage they cause to people/animals/the environment. They’re just a loud nuisance when they’re going off for hours on end from every other house/local park. It’s getting to the point that only the most stubborn of people are excusing what a negative they’ve become.

To be fair it's getting late now, especially if you have primary school aged children. We did some fireworks in our garden around 6pm. Then bath, book, bed. He's still wide awake as the bangs and shouts are Keeping him up (he's 6 years old) Not much I can do about it but just ride it out, however I do get that maybe there could be a cut off time for children and pets to get some rest 😊

You can’t really complain though if you’ve left them off yourself!

I love Halloween too, I loved handing out sweets to the little ones and the dog loved the visitors too (they all know him, he’s very well known in our village, I don’t just see him loose on strangers). I love Christmas too, in fact I get nicknamed Mrs Christmas, but this is hideous!

That's awful.

I feel terrible for the wild animals around here. My friend is staying with her horse tonight because he's also terrified of the noise.

People always seem to be able to afford fireworks.
They've been constantly going off for 3 nights all night.
It sounds like World War three out there.

JemimaTiggywinkles · 05/11/2024 20:51

I love Halloween and joyfully participated in it. I love Christmas and I'm very excited for it.

But I hate Halloween. My cat gets stressed every time someone knocks on the door and my niece finds the decorations scary. Should we ban Halloween to suit me and others like me? Or should we all just accept that living in proximity to other people means putting up with some annoying things?

Can't I? We let them off as it's 05/11 and a nice experience for the children at a reasonable time after tea. It's now nearly 9pm and they are still going strong.
The fireworks themselves is a tradition that brings people together and for families and friends to share memories - but to set them off constantly, into the night, after a while becomes quite selfish. Oh well, only a few nights out of the year I suppose. 😊

BloodyFireworks · 05/11/2024 20:53

They’ve been non stop for weeks by me. I don’t mind it in the day time really, but when they’re going on late into the night it drives me insane.

Not comparable to literally having explosions going off all hours for weeks is it

Mum2jenny · 05/11/2024 20:56

The fireworks here are less intense than previous nights. My ddog doesn’t seem to care about them. She’s pretty chilled about big noises.

EmpressaurusDelleGatte · 05/11/2024 21:01

Quiet fireworks are available in most supermarkets now.

There’s no reason people need to buy the noisy ones any more.

Laserwho · 05/11/2024 21:02

WonderingWanda · 05/11/2024 20:19

Sorry to hear your cats are so stressed. My cat has always been totally indifferent to fireworks but can be totally thrown and out of sorts if I move a piece of furniture.

The dog I had as a kid was a rescue dog. Very nervous scared dog, his old owner used to hit him. We cared for and trained him but no amount of training would cure him if the fear caused by fireworks. He used to tremble and try to hide behind the toilet. We used to sedated him for 1 night because in the 80s it didn't go in for weeks on end like it does now. So no you carnt just train dogs esp rescue dogs

Münchner · 05/11/2024 21:06

It's hard to have much sympathy with dog owners who let their dogs shit everywhere so that everyone else can tread in it. The other day there was dog poo in the sandpit at the local playground.
Fireworks are pretty annoying though when they go on for days on end and should probably not be sold to the public and/or restricted to Guy Fawkes and NYE or something.

BigHoops · 05/11/2024 21:07

I'm super exhausted after a long day. I just want to wind down and sleep but it's like fucking WW3 here. I don't get why people feel the need to do them so late! It's dark from early evening these days, no need to be after 9 - the other night they were going on till 2am!

We did have fireworks in our garden on Saturday between 6 and 6.30pm on Saturday. Really think there should be a ban from 8pm. DD hates the noise and keeps coming in, it's bloody annoying all round.

JemimaTiggywinkles · 05/11/2024 21:07

Why? It's something completely unnecessary which causes significant distress to my pet and niece. In some ways it's worse - trick or treating means other people coming literally onto my property without permission!

Halloween isn't even particularly traditional where I am. Nobody round here did trick or treating when I was a child. Fireworks have been a thing (round here) for longer than I can remember and is part of the local culture.

Apollo365 · 05/11/2024 21:09

Personally I love them but my dog is a bit dim and doesn’t notice them. My kids are still awake looking out the window which isn’t ideal. I love this time of year, we didn’t get many trick or treaters but it was nice to see little people dressed up and we put our pumpkin out to encourage knocking on the door.
I guess we live in an area where people are more considerate. It’s shit that you’ve had them going off since 10am. Such a waste of money when you can’t even see them!

My dog has never had a stray shit. And even the owners that do let them, it's not the dogs fault they're shit. Why is it OK for them to be scared out of their wits for weeks on end.

Halloween is a night. Ignore the door. Or go out.

What tradition is it when fireworks are going off at 10am on a Sunday?

piscofrisco · 05/11/2024 21:20

I usually love bonfire night but I've got a very poorly dog that is a bag of nerves with each bang, and the fireworks are non stop round us (this is our first year in this house-they were never this bad where we lived before as it was rural) and have been since Divali really. It's getting on my last nerve this evening.

123teenagerfood · 05/11/2024 21:21

I Iove fireworks as do my family, the cats sit in the window and watch with us.

Wildlife, autistic kids, people with PTSD... fuck them too ay?

Get a grip. They should be banned.

Not to mention all the litter caused by spent fireworks.

Coatsoff42 · 05/11/2024 21:27

There’s an anxious dog on our road that barks and barks whenever anyone goes in their garden, and thats ruining the peace 52 weeks a year, I can’t be bothered about a week or so of fireworks, especially when they are so beautiful.

It's not only kids who are autistic...

Elseaknows · 05/11/2024 21:32

We have had a pretty shit night. My DS has been sitting in my bed, on his ipad with his ear defenders on. When he thought it had all calmed down he finally went to the toilet and next door decided to let off a load of very loud fireworks (that sounded like gunshots.) He's come out of the toilet screaming. Next door still has his music blaring and he's now drinking around his fire with his primary school children screeching in the back garden but fuck it "it's a celebration" apparently. 🙄

Any excuse for my pisshead neighbour to crack out the cans and for the little shits in my area to throw fireworks in the street.

Fireworks should be for public displays only. They aren't safe and people (like my neighbour) are fucking idiots.
