To want the fireworks to stop now?

They started here at about 2pm (yes, really!) and haven't stopped since. My cats are hiding and won't eat. I have a thumping headache from the noise and just want some quiet for a bit. They started at the same time yesterday and didn't stop until 11pm ISH.

It's mental how it's legal and encouraged to buy heavy explosives to celebrate a sectarian torture murder in the UK

I'm currently overseas and honestly think I'll make it an annual thing

arinya · 05/11/2024 20:18

My dog was fine with fireworks for the first 6 years of her life. Now she’s not. It dictates what we can do at this time of year, and at new year. We put the tv up, play the radio, cover her ears, make a den she can go under. She’s unsettled, off her food and every time we take her out for a walk or let her in the garden, we have to hope they don’t start going off (I heard the first firework at 3:30pm today). I really wish she wasn’t scared but the vet says this often starts as dogs age . There’s nothing we can do except just ride it out. But we’ve had a week of it here already. I realise if you don’t have a pet, or a child, that gets distressed by fireworks,it’s hard to relate and easy to feel like people are snowflake killjoys. I actually used to like seeing fireworks, but now it’s just bloody draining.

Seashellssanctuary · 05/11/2024 20:18

I get a bit fed up.of the pet complaints. No idea about cats but dogs can be trained to deal with the noise.
At the end of the day fireworks existed before people's 3 year old cockawhatever and therefore responsibility falls on the owner

Gundogs aren't a superbreed that are born with noise cancelling ears. I've had two dogs, one a rescue and neither were scared because I trained them. Both were happy to go out for walks and sit and watch the fireworks. There was nothing special about me or them just a bot of training did the trick

WonderingWanda · 05/11/2024 20:19

Sorry to hear your cats are so stressed. My cat has always been totally indifferent to fireworks but can be totally thrown and out of sorts if I move a piece of furniture.

Weefreetiffany · 05/11/2024 20:20

Why dont you put a noise machine or some music on to cover the noises?

As i tell my toddler when he doesnt like the sound of hand dryers, sometimes there are things you have to tolerate even if you dont like them and building resilience to occasional unavoidable discomfort will make you stronger in the long term.

Anxiety and control issues minimised too. Also EMDR is really good for ptsd thats triggered by unexpected noises, said from experience.

QuestionableMouse · 05/11/2024 20:20

It's the massive screamy one that I can't deal with, especially because they're literally exploding just outside of my flat and the noise is awful. There's silent ones now so I don't see why the really loud ones are still available.

It's literally November 5th! YABU.

And we've had them every night since before Halloween. One night is fine.

I have, and it's not helping.

Dogs can’t be trained once the fear is there. As I just said, our dog was fine for the first 6 years of her life. 2 years ago she stopped being fine and is now frightened. The vet and the dog behaviour therapist we have seen about it have both said the same. You can’t reinforce fear and once they are older you can’t train them out of it.

My dog was fine as a pup and until he was around 9. It's the last few years. The only thing that's changed is that the fireworks have got loader and go on for longer and longer.

There is no need for anyone to buy them to use at home for a random Tuesday night just because they can. Or setting them off in day light.

What about horses and wildlife? Just totally unnecessary

People are so miserable on MN

Last week you were all complaining about Halloween.

Next you will be bitching about Xmas and god help us when Hogmanay comes round.

Love Halloween, love Christmas, love a public firework display.

What i don't love is thick twats that have been letting fireworks off for weeks not giving a shit about anyone or anything else.

Thing is you have Diwali as well

ELLEMAY87 · 05/11/2024 20:28

To be fair it's getting late now, especially if you have primary school aged children. We did some fireworks in our garden around 6pm. Then bath, book, bed. He's still wide awake as the bangs and shouts are Keeping him up (he's 6 years old) Not much I can do about it but just ride it out, however I do get that maybe there could be a cut off time for children and pets to get some rest 😊

PigeonTamer · 05/11/2024 20:29

That’s two threads about fireworks where all of @Spaffer’s comments have been deleted. I would love to know what passionate sentiments are being expressed before the mumsnet axe falls 😂

I don’t think it’s a miserable war on joy to feel frustrated about fireworks going off every day for 7-10 days straight. But it is hard to feel joyful when you are dealing with a distressed animal. I don’t expect everyone to get that though. Some people treat their pets like shit. Maybe some people would suggest I have my dog put to sleep instead. I just want my dog to be able to relax again. It starts to wear you down after the first week.

I love Halloween and joyfully participated in it. I love Christmas and I'm very excited for it.

What I don't love is listening to very loud bangs and having everything stinking of smoke for days on end. We're doing fireworks tomorrow but have bought silent ones. Not to mention the big display my town puts on.

My cats are so scared they're hiding behind the couch even with music playing.

I love fireworks but I think they should only be available for commercial events and not home parties. They have been going off so loud near me my 1 year old has thrown up tonight as he’s so scared. It’s so selfish to set them off in densely populated areas

IAmAGrumpyArse · 05/11/2024 20:33

I hate fireworks. It terrifies the cat.
