... won't be so exciting - Kamala will scrape through and Trump will moan and then back down?

Can't see a thread on this, but if there is, please do tell me x

CNN news on Apache County, Arizone (another swing state):

"Some voters in Apache County, Arizona, were turned away before they could cast ballots on Election Day due to faulty machines, with voting issues “the worst we’ve ever seen,” Katherine Belzowski, assistant attorney general at the Navajo Nation Department of Justice, told CNN"

He is a successful business man

Yeah, he's only gone bankrupt six or seven times.

Also, even if he had been a successful businessman in the past he is also clearly going into dementia.

So far the exit polls look to show trump winning

and they're absolutely useless when we're still 3 hours from the first polls closing and many, many hours more from 6 of the 7 swing states with many people expected to vote after work.

Fund is the key word… we’ll cheer all day long for them but we have to stop pouring money into it.

I think you mean 😉

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 05/11/2024 20:07

Serious question: given the vast numbers of early/mail-in voters this time, how relevant are the exit polls?

BurntBroccoli · 05/11/2024 20:08

Brananan · 05/11/2024 17:13

I feel unusually uninvested tbh.

I was just about to say the same! Last US election I was glued to the TV!

Pippyls67 · 05/11/2024 20:09

Please God you’re right. I’d be very very excited if this is all that happens. The world will have been saved from four years of the despotic rantings and ramblings of a grotesque, repugnant, odious slab of human awfulness and wake up to the first ever American female president. Thats pretty bloody marvellous in my opinion .

they call people up who voted early or mailed in to get a better representation.

but it's mostly useless apart from the swing states and possibly Iowa.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 05/11/2024 20:15

All the polls seem to rely on people answering their phones.

I know nobody who answers their phone to callers whose numbers they don't recognise! I can't help feeling that may be one of the problems the polls now have to deal with: they only get, for their counts, people who are not spam-resistant .

In some ways it makes it easier. For instance if historically mail in voters tend lean 🦞 by x% and you can get the returned ballot count (and that data is mostly available now) and the number returned is 10% less than the last election you can start making some predictions.

"As of 8:53 a.m. on Tuesday, the City of [REDACTED] Election Commission says it has received 106,750 absentee ballots from the 113,311 it issued. Compared to the 169,000 absentee ballots received in 2020, that's a decrease of 36 percent." - per [REDACTED]

The City of [REDACTED] Is a strong 🦞 base with a historically strong early vote record by 🦞 voters.

You can also glean a lot by the number of votes in a city…

City X typically votes 🦞 and their votes are down … things are bad for 🦞
City Y leans 🐙 and their voter turnout is better than the last election then it’s a strong indicator that 🐙 will win there.

I absolutely do not know what to think. Leave it all to God. Even though US evangelicals claim they are sure Trump is God's chosen one

Not quite, @swiftieswoop ... Dixville Notch up in New Hampshire already declared the result from their grand total of SIX (!!) voters

Three each Grin

Anyone know why they have such long queues at polling stations in America compared to here. I’ve never been in a queue of more than about five people.

1dayatatime · 05/11/2024 23:45

My prediction is:
Harris 270
Trump 268

Good question…to be honest I don’t know anything about your voting process.

But here (US) you are assigned a polling location based on your address.

I live in a small district but share a polling location with a larger district. When first started voting they had separate lines for each district so being in the smaller one I would breeze past the line. Now we all wait together. So this morning I arrived 5 min before voting started and walked out the door ~50 minutes later.

In years past I would have been done in under 20 minutes.

I should say it’s probably down to workers and equipment in most areas.

I think the amount of money that the US government has poured into contractors like Musk is astonishing! I suspect that Trumps supporters would argue that That money is justified however because of the innovation/he's a genius etc. (a lot of innovation does happen through his work. But the Ukraine war is also delivering a lot of innovation for the money spent so that excuse works there). But for some reason Musk subsidies aren't a terrible waste of money that could be spent on American people...

mjf981 · 05/11/2024 23:55

I fear he will win. I think the media (aside from FOX etc) are desperate for Harris to win, so they have bigged up her chances. But ultimately I think he will win. Sigh. I can't even watch him speak, he's too creepy and distasteful for words.

Huh? Ok, what innovations have come out of the Ukraine war?

biscuitandcake · 06/11/2024 00:04

Drone technology advances for one thing. I am not saying war is good because it leads to innovation. But if spending lots and lots of money is worth it for Musk innovations, it's worth it for other technological advances. It's all money coming from the same source.

Tbh, the actions at the last election were highly suspect, so you would hardly blame people for thinking cheating has taken place. Boxes being dropped off at polling stations at the dead of night, when the relevant boxes were already in the building. Polling station buildings locked up, and republicans who were checking on suspicious actions not allowed to enter whilst counting took place, amongst many other very dodgy actions. I honestly think corruption is alive and kicking on both sides in American politics. Whoever they get, America is going to be incredibly weakened, which is very worrying in a world which is kicking off at the moment.

This. 100%. 👏👏
