I had to download a messaging app today and my dp has this app on another seperate phone he has. His contact came up on this app once I'd downloaded it but I don't understand why he has some woman's picture on his profile pic haven't a clue who it is and why. Would you find this odd.

What is Telegram and why do some PPs think it’s dodgy?

Because it’s the favoured app for people engaging in illegal or otherwise unsavoury business. It has essentially zero moderation of what kind of content is put on there, and it is anonymous. You can imagine where that leads.

It’s a messaging service and you don’t need a mobile number to join.

The messages are encrypted so are private. Some people don’t like the privacy settings of watsap - in which Watsap/Facebook ect.. can use the data in your messages at will.

Some people use the app for nefarious reasons - but not all do.

The job is a scam, I know someone who have lost thousands on a similar scam

candycane222 · 05/11/2024 07:14

Yes the job might possibly want you to have telegram for eg commercial security but I'd ask out if interest.

Re the profile pic I did once have a Google account randomly (seemed random to me, assume I had done something weird) link itself to the ID I had put on one of my contacts (actually a photo of my car for my car park details!) but as soon as I noticed I removed it because it was embarrassing. So unless he's even less tech savvy than me, it does seem odd.

Blueblell · 05/11/2024 07:14

When one of your contacts joins telegram you get a notification so he will get a notification you are now on telegram and will see his profile

Bleachbum · 05/11/2024 08:31

A few large, well-known companies I have worked for have insisted Telegram is used for exec level business chat and WhatsApp is forbidden in order to protect commercially sensitive data. It is not all dodgy.

ShakeUpYourTiredEyes · 05/11/2024 08:38

Old phone numbers get re used.
I have my brothers name saved twice in my phone keep meaning to delete the old one but then forget but on WhatsApp his old phone number is now a girl on the profile picture and I messaged something and then again asking who it was on the photo but turns out it was the girl in the picture and I'd messaged the old number. His contract was up with o2 and he left and joined ee and his o2 number now belongs to someone else could it be that?

Josette77 · 05/11/2024 09:12

Telegram is also used by cheaters because either side can erase all the messages. There's more control and privacy.

Every married man who has messaged me on dating apps used telegram.

Figgygal · 05/11/2024 09:50

Why not be an adult and just ask him about it?

Unrelated I was asked by a Facebook job offer to download telegram.

I bought a new phone and I couldn’t get WhatsApp on the new number as it was still being used by the previous owner of the phone.

Autumnalsun · 05/11/2024 10:09

I assume it’s a photo of his ex that he hadn’t changed or he’s catfishing and talking to men.

FeetLikeFlippers · 05/11/2024 10:15

Tevion321 · 04/11/2024 22:59

Well he upgraded and just kept hold of the old one

But the old phone and new phone have separate numbers, right? “Upgraded and just kept hold of the old one” implies he shoved in a drawer and forgot about it, but he is actively using it. It does sound dodgy but there could be an innocent explanation. Is there any reason why you don’t feel like you can just ask him? It’s not like you were snooping, it just came up on your app, and you don’t have to ask in a suspicious way, just “oh that’s weird, why is that picture showing up on your account?” Hope you get to the bottom of it, please update us.

It was promoting somebody's YouTube channel but when they asked for bank details to pay my first reward forv simply subscribing I haven't bothered as I'm not sure if it's genuine.

Telegram is used by lots of people. Some people don’t like the idea of Watsap having control of their messages - which they do. I know plenty of professional people who have telegram.

You get a notification when people on your contact list join.

So your partner might already be aware you have joined.

He has uploaded 2 profile pictures of a woman.

Id bet he is pretending to be her.

“Having control” tells me everything.

@Tevion321 Ask MN going forward if you’re unsure and the Wise Ones will let you know until you get more savvy.
