If you google XL bully there’s always multiple articles of recent attacks that haven’t made it to the national press because they weren’t fatal. It’s frightening.

XenoBitch · 04/11/2024 18:38

My mum was talking to a lady in a dog food shop, and the lady said she had an XL bully that was just 6 months old. Surely that should not be possible?

Huhreally · 04/11/2024 18:21

Oh no, not another one 😢

The absolute unbelievable agony that child will have suffered.

There needs to be a compulsory round up and cull. NOW!!

I agree but I don't think it will happen.

I'd even write to my MP but I don't have much faith that they'd send anything except a cookie cutter response.

WhimsicalGubbins76 · 04/11/2024 18:40

There’s too many XL owners out there that constantly bleat on about how it’s “all down to bad training”
This is true for many dog breeds, but the XL is in a league of its own. They’re all “great family dogs” until they’re not.
This story is the perfect example. Pound to a penny the family has regularly stated all previous attacks are down to bad owners because theirs adores their daughter. But now their dog has also turned, and they have to go through what absolutely no parent should ever go through.
Because of the way they’ve been bred, they have extremely aggressive instincts, and you cannot train that out of them. Something as minor as it being a hot day can make them turn on their owner.
The breed should be straight out banned here.

No kicking it absolutely wouldn't work.

I have a friend in America whose family had a Pit Bull (legal over there) it bit one of the family (thankfully a grown man) on the arm and wouldn't let go. People kicked it, hit it with sticks etc it still wouldn't let go, eventually someone actually had to slit its throat with a knife to get it to let go. The whole family were incredibly traumatised and the man still has his arm although a lot of muscle was torn away so I don't think it is fully functional. If he had been a child or they had not acted quickly enough he would be dead.

OMG that's a dreadful thing to read @Littletreefrog, what a dreadful experience for everyone involved. Dreadfully sad for all who had to see that, and the poor man that was attacked too. It might sound terrible but the person who did what he had to do, was incredibly brave to get that close. There was no choice in the matter.

Hands up there are some lovely ones out there, I have met many of them, do I trust them? Not on your life, would I have one? Nope again.I have worked with animals and had animals all my life, but no thank you very much.

They seem to turn very quickly from lovely dogs into killing machines, it's like something switches in their brain and off they go. My friend had one and it did exactly the same thing and had to be pts ( turned on her but never got the chance to cause any damage) she got rid asap.

Just shocked me that he turned like that for no reason, so I'm totally against people having them in a family home around children.

I hate thinking of a mass cull of any breed, but it will be needed as the pounds and shelters here are full to the brim of them, and they cant be rehomed, so they have nowhere to go. Pounds and shelters can't keep them forever, its simply impracticable so they will need to be culled.

They won't, because their precious 'fur baby' can do no wrong.

Dog owners are honestly the most weirdly obsessive and defensive people I've ever met.

JubileeJuice · 04/11/2024 18:45

I'm not sad for the family. I'm absolutely disgusted by their actions. THEY killed their daughter by allowing a mutant "Dog" specifically bred to kill, into their home. They acquired it illegally and that poor little girl had to die in the most terrifying, painful way, because of her thick, selfish parents.

I'm a massive dog lover and these things are not dogs. They're genetically modified killing machines with a screw loose. How many more children have to die?

Two men were attacked by one last night. One had his throat ripped out, but is apparently alive. It's getting beyond.

Why haven’t you reported him, before a tragedy happens?

Rude – if you check p2 you’ll see I have

You know what they call assumption

If it has a very strong collar on one can lift it up or twist it to cut off airway in an emergency

Before the muzzle rules I was walking a relative’s Labrador when it was attacked by one of these dogs. It was on a lead but it broke free. My husband managed to get it off by choking with it with its collar. He then picked it up and threw it over a hedge. It all happened very fast. The owner then had a go at my husband for hurting his dog! It all got very ugly. Luckily my husband is a big man and the owner backed off.

I've read citronella spray is effective. 🤔

Have you ever seen a Pit or XL Bully attack?
If CS gas doesn’t work ( Dutch Police) I doubt pretty lemony scent will

My gentle Whippet isn’t remotely bothered by pure Citronella ( local pharmacist sells it )

Grammarnut · 04/11/2024 18:48

These dogs are bred to fight. However, to some extent horrors like these are the consequence of how owners treat their dog. If it's not disciplined and not discouraged (strongly) from aggressive acts then the likely result is the dog will attack. One rule with any dog - even a Yorkie or a toy breed - is never, NEVER leave it along with a child. Dogs are carnivores and one should remember that.

Grammarnut · 04/11/2024 18:49

To put this in perspective more people are killed or maimed by horses than dogs in the UK.

Bloody cheek of them!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/11/2024 18:50

How many of these dogs are reported and ignored?

To repeat the link I added upthread, @Patienceinshortsupply:
crimestoppers-uk.org/news-campaigns/news/2024/aug/crimestoppers-xl-bully-ban-report-figures

I'm not in a position to know how many of these were culled, but potentially the answer to your question could be over 2,500

What a bloody idiotic comment, horses don't turn on and kill children or hadn't you noticed?

Are these deaths, tragic as they are, invariably children or vulnerable people who have them in their homes without them themselves having a say? Are they in residential areas? I don't think this is a decent gotcha really.

Travellingheavily · 04/11/2024 18:53

powotsits · 04/11/2024 15:52

There is an idiot near us who walks one off lead without a muzzle round the little residential streets near us – always full of children out playing

I'd kick up such a fuss they'd put me down before I'd stop calling the police about this. Terrible, like carrying a gun and waving it around in public

gamerchick · 04/11/2024 15:49

There can't be anything other than a cull. These dogs can't stay sane. It's bugger all to do with how they're raised.

I've got a friend who'd disagree with you.

It's definitely NOT the dogs fault, she thinks it's the owners fault.

I was shocked she actually believed this.

Recently, a 12 yr old Welsh 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 girl had an unmuzzled XL Bully attack her as she got out of the family car.

Her father managed to get it off her and her mother said had he not, their daughter could have been killed

Here is what ONE bite did to her arm.

They want to share the image to warn people. {Covered as it's distressing}

That's some weird perspective you've got.

How about more kids have been killed by dogs than 'strangers'.

Stressedafff · 04/11/2024 18:55

These dogs need culling and forcing into extinction. I cannot believe this is happening, it’s almost weekly there’s something in the news about these dogs mauling people.

That’s awful. The dog that my husband pulled off was so focussed on attacking our dog that he didn’t seem to notice my husband at all.

One rule with any dog - even a Yorkie or a toy breed - is never, NEVER leave it along with a child. Dogs are carnivores and one should remember that.

It baffles me that people even struggle with this concept. Perhaps they watched too much Tarzan or Dr. Dolittle as a child and now believe they have a mystical ability to commune with anthropomorphic dogs.

We have a rescued chihuahua mix, loves people and children, never had a single aggressive incident, has all her kc good citizen awards.

But as much as I love her she is still an animal, one whose behaviour I could never predict with 100% certainty.

So she is never left alone with children, and when we have very young children visit she is seperated from them by a baby gate into the kitchen while they play on the floor.

Does anyone know if they loudly growl/bark when they attack?

One of my neighbours has one, always muzzled and on a lead. I'm very wary of it, but the neighbour has complied with all the laws, gone above and beyond. They adopted it from a shelter before the ban.

Another neighbour swears it attacked her, but she's only got a tiny scratch and when she started screaming the dog had attacked her it was in its garden and was just sat there.
Wouldn't it it still have been barking or something?

Sorry to derail, I know nothing about dogs!

I would be very wary of this neighbourhood dog however if this woman has a small scratch then she wasn’t attacked .
she may have been jumped on , dogs nails can scratch accidentally which isn’t great , their nails need trimming

I’ve considered carrying a little mini hairspray. Not sure how much good it would do

I have a small tin of the boots version of deep heat spray - its a smaller tin than deep heat but will burn eyes etc and obvs I only have it in my dog walking bag for my knees...
