An uterly atrocious & preventable tragedy. How can people put their families life in danger every day of their lives when it's a well known fact this type of dog can turn on owners regardless of how loving they appear to be. It's like falling in love with a murderous psychopath & defending them to the hilt. A cull & ban is the only way forward. At the very least jail time for owners who walk them without a muzzle.

I have friends who have an XL. They obey all the rules etc and train her. They are expecting a baby soon and they seem to be completely delusional about the impact this baby will have on this kind of dog. The dog is ok, very very over excitable. Jumps up etc. very very powerful. They adore her and say they train her etc and will keep her separate to baby. In the next breath they say she breaks through any baby gates they put up.

People can be really stupid when it comes to their dogs. No way in hell would I have that dog near a baby.

In someways this is the downside of the current laws

People who are responsible can't rehome them. The obly options are keep them or kill them so In situations where they are dubious of the dogs suitability they end up keeping them. I often wonder if some of the attacks have come after people felt forced to keep the dog even though they know it's not suitable

In someways it also forces people to do things like illegally rehome, people willing to take on an illegally transferred dog are unlikely to be a safe home.

I don't know what the answer is

Avatartar · 04/11/2024 18:08

It’s so depressingly familiar and often innocent victims die rather than the owners.
Let’s hope for a cull.
You can’t persuade stupid people to stop owning/breeding these things, they’ll just think there’s a conspiracy of some kind

User19876536484 · 04/11/2024 18:08

TBF there are no details released as yet just a report of 'mauling'. A dog that size only needs to bite a 10 yr old once, in the wrong place, to cause a death

Cats maul, dogs bite.

PinkyAndTheBarnacle · 04/11/2024 18:08

I feel so sorry for the poor little girl. What a horrific way to die.

I don’t feel at all sorry for the family I’m afraid.

Errors · 04/11/2024 16:15

It’s like they are pure muscle! They look incredibly strong. I tried to find out what you should do in an event of an attack by one because I’ve heard so many people say you should just be able to kick it and it will leave you alone but I don’t think that’s the case

Would pepper spray work or would that make an attack worse? People just don't know what to do

OttersAreMySpiritAnimal · 04/11/2024 18:14

Probsnot · 04/11/2024 16:55

I don't mean to laugh but this is ludicrous

Have a look at pets 4 homes and the breeding standards on there. There's so many breaking current laws eg Lucy's law.

How would you stop people?

I don't look at that site as I find it too upsetting.
I'm not saying it would be an overnight fix.
Proper funding and powers for dog wardens and charities. More dog wardens. Reporting channels, as it upsets so many people I'm sure loads of people would happily report neighbours anonymously.
Penalities if social media firms don't take action.
Charity commission to clamp down on charities that exist just to ship dogs into the UK from other countries.
I expect the vast majority of responsible dog owners and breeders would happily comply, I know I would. Proper penalties would put off another subset who do it because they can get away with it right now. So that leaves the criminal element and they will only continue if it is profitable and there's a lot of ways to ensure it isn't.
It would take time but it would definitely be effective.

Packetofcrispsplease · 04/11/2024 18:16

Oh how horrible, there was one at the vet at my dogs last appointment.
Great ugly brute , owner looked thuggish , thank god it was muzzled!
My dog is a smallish terrier I was very glad that dog wasn’t near us !

ethelredonagoodday · 04/11/2024 18:16

Awful. I'd support a cull and also more generally a licensing system for all dogs.

"One of the lines of inquiry relates to the behaviour of the dog to help explain, as far as possible, why it attacked the girl.
"All indications so far suggest it was out of character, with the girl and dog having a close, loving relationship."

I cannot get over the stupidity of this statement from North Yorkshire police. Do they not think before they speak?Analysing a dog FFS, like too many dog owners they think they're the dog-whisperer. I like dogs but I don't assume I can read their minds and guarantee their actions. Dog was a killer, that's it.

The parents need to be sent to prison. Their DD died a painful death due to them being hard-headed idiots.

DeeDee - You are so right with people thinking they are the dog whisperer.
People who have XL Bullies and similar seem especially prone to this delusional belief , and spout “Nanny Dog “nonsense that is complete myth.

These dogs are hardwired to snap out of the blue.

ANY dog can be unreliable but XL Bullies and similarly especially so .

I’d not trust any dog around small children.

Mia Derouen ( age 4) was slaughtered by her mother’s boyfriends XL pitbull - Police said it took 11 rounds to make it release her body.

The XL pitbull so say was “her pet” before it killed her.

Her mother said it flipped out of the blue.

Propertyladder123 · 04/11/2024 18:18

Struggling here - very avoidable and sounds like dog was illegally rehomed. Absolute stupidity and agree the parent should be charged with manslaughter.

BelgianBiscuit · 04/11/2024 18:18

It's either massive naivety or arrogance on the parents part.

I train working dogs in personal protection and for security work, they are not pets. The amount of XL and cane corso owners who rock up, ( usually being dragged behind their dog) and want their dog trained in bite work with zero obedience training on place is shocking. 9/10 they are not experienced enough to own the breeds, the dogs reactive to other dogs and it's not socialized or exercised properly. Most of them do get off on scaring people with their dog.

Huhreally · 04/11/2024 18:21

Oh no, not another one 😢

The absolute unbelievable agony that child will have suffered.

There needs to be a compulsory round up and cull. NOW!!

BoudiccasBangles · 04/11/2024 18:27

HeadacheEarthquake · 04/11/2024 18:05

I think the shock is that they're banned and we've still had 17 deaths this year, the ban has seemingly made it worse

17 deaths? Even after the ban? My god, I had no idea it was that many.

oakleaffy · 04/11/2024 18:27

Firstimpressions · 04/11/2024 18:13

Would pepper spray work or would that make an attack worse? People just don't know what to do

No- Pepper spray is useless
( according to people who have used it)
There are numerous videos online that show several gunshots are the only effective way to make it release.

Some say choking the dog out can help but good luck with THAT.

If it has a very strong collar on one can lift it up or twist it to cut off airway in an emergency-

A Mumsnet user had her lovely dog killed by one

Her husband is a strong rugby player large animal veterinary surgeon and he was physically powerless.

These things are like hippos 🦛 and incredibly strong, which appeals to their weak owners.

Apologies, it was 16 in the first 9 months of 2023, I'll try to find the 2024 figures

Oldseagull · 04/11/2024 18:32

Same old story.

As soon as these animals reach the age of sexual maturity, its like a time bomb waiting to go off. Like other animals can seem loving and cute until a certain age, when they usually proceed to rip your face off (monkeys, tigers etc).

It's not their fault, they already had the intense prey drive from the original breeds, but now they have been bred into monstrosities.

If the government are too squeamish to do the necessary cull, then at the very least social services have to be involved in any home where the adults are thick enough to have one of this breed around their children.

It appears to be six deaths this year which although not as bad, is still pretty horrific to me

Has there been a sudden rise in attacks. Or is having an XL bully a newer thing and that's why we are hearing so much of them?

Most attacks and deaths are done by XL bullies.

Patienceinshortsupply · 04/11/2024 18:33

There's a house that backs onto the industrial unit where i work. They've got 4 XL bullies - Mum and 3 pups that they weren't able to shift. They're outdoors in all weather and overnight without shelter, never walked, thrown scraps instead of being fed properly, screamed at 24/7 and they have 2 small children under 6 that are out there playing on swings. I've reported to the RSPCA, the Police and the Council that owns the house as well as Social Services.. 4 months later, they're still there. We have emergency access down a path alongside the garden but we've had to block it off for safety of the staff.

How many of these dogs are reported and ignored?

Bignanna · 04/11/2024 18:34

powotsits · 04/11/2024 15:52

There is an idiot near us who walks one off lead without a muzzle round the little residential streets near us – always full of children out playing

Why haven’t you reported him, before a tragedy happens?

IVFmumoftwo · 04/11/2024 18:35

I have just seen a video of that Irish lady and her dogs that killed her. Jeez.

I've read citronella spray is effective. 🤔

I’m not a dog trainer ( apart from training my own pet Sighthounds in manners like not pulling, waiting &c)
But I have seen so many weedy men dragged around by their large dog, the dog clearly isn’t listening to them and they are powerless.

Powits and any others seeing unmuzzled xl bullies..can you phone 101 and report. If people keep doing it perhaps the police will be more active in stopping it.
