I'm glad you're all telling me this stuff!

I literally had no idea, I thought that because their dog was quiet it was placid!

My dog is vocal , without being yappy , which is actually really very helpful to read how he’s feeling.
If he is uncomfortable for whatever reason he growls .
We then know we need to get out of that situation / remove ourselves/ stop .
That is very rare because we don’t put him in uncomfortable situations.
He also grumbles a lot + does a lot of cat like noises 😂 and sighs , huffs which is ok just to let me know he’s had enough when I am grooming him .
He is also small and very manageable size wise , although he’s sturdy enough and not a fragile breed .

SpudleyLass · 04/11/2024 23:02

Smallsalt · 04/11/2024 22:59

Well yes.
But my point is, that the vast majority of women don't kill people, therefore it would be foolish to "ban" all women because a sub set does.

Only, xl bullies don't represent women in this. They represent men.

Its not a clean comparison, I grant you.

But XL bullies disproprotionately kill far more than any other breed.

To compare them to women when female killers actually are rare, is mental.

Honestly, these dogs terrify me. My husband is a paramedic and sometimes he goes to houses where there are big dogs. (Also being honest, the overlap between the places he goes to and ownership of unsuitable dogs is higher than average).

He will get the owner to put the dog away but it just takes one slip 😢

DopeyS · 04/11/2024 23:08

oakleaffy · 04/11/2024 22:37

Bloody hell...that's sore.

Before the 'ban' I was walking my Whippet and a friend's small Lurcher.

I heard a woman screaming, and looked and saw a massive XL Pit charging for us.

I got behind a gate, and put my two on leads.

It crashed through the fence and my two dogs were terrified, frantically trying to escape their collars- I had to unclip them both.

The XL Pit wasn't sure which one to go for first, but my dog was staying close to me.

It was horrendous- I was sure she was going to be killed- only her agile nature kept her from being caught, until the brute cornered her.

I grabbed the XL's collar then, and it was like being dragged by a horse.

I was bouncing around on it's back, holding onto to it's collar, while being dragged down a flight of steps

My weight {9.5 stones} hanging off its collar caused it to slow up eventually

It's owner seemed afraid of it.

The owner was awful.

I was injured and took months to recover -musculoskeletal and hand injury from holding on to its collar} to enable mine to get away.

The Dog warden found my friend's dog who had been caught by a kindly street sweeper - he noticed her ''running terrified'' and caught her with a bit of string and a bit of his sandwich. {Whoever you are, thank you}

The Warden was wonderful and said had I not released my two, they would probably have been killed being as they are small and light {10.5 kgs each}

Thankfully that XL didn't attack me- it was fixated upon my dog.

Warden didn't fine me for having a loose dog- due to the circumstances. He delivered my friend's dog back to my home {I could barely walk due to injuries}

Warden also said that he has been pulled about by XL's despite being a strong man used to dogs -and they ''aren't suitable pets and we don't want them in the community because of the instability of them- they tend to be passed on to unsuitable people.

So glad your dogs were ok and so sorry you were injured. Any video I've seen of an attack the owners are less than useless. The dogs always seem to escape their collars and harnesses. They're relentless once they lock on. I'm on a Reddit thread about pitbulls and there are so many pets, especially cats, but lots of people being killed by them. It's horrendous.

All comments are positive towards the wonderful loving xl bullies

Chilling!!

That's awful. That dog has no love or affection in its eyes. It's constantly looking around and on the alert. It looks like it's on a hair trigger. I look after my friend's Labrador and you can see the doggy love in his eyes, body language and expressions. There's a connection there and I feel safe around him. That XL thing makes me shudder.

Oliveoily · 04/11/2024 23:13

I wonder if there is some kind of petition to get them culled.

PadstowGirl · 04/11/2024 23:16

They should be put to sleep, and their dog as well.

Rest in peace dear child.

Snarpy · 04/11/2024 23:17

If you put 100 people in a room for an hour, they almost certainly wouldn't bite and kill each other.

If you put 100 labradors in a room, they most likely wouldn't bite and kill each other.

If you put 100 XL bullies in a room together, they'd kill each other.

It's that simple.

ZoeCM · 04/11/2024 23:20

One of the excuses I've heard is "poodles and Labradors are just as dangerous, but the media doesn't report on it because it's not what middle England wants to hear". But there are so many news stories where it's reported that a human has been killed by a dog whose breed is currently unspecified... and then, a few days later, it emerges that it was an XL bully. How can the media be biased against XL bullies if the breed isn't even known when the story goes to press?

Rinoachicken · 04/11/2024 23:24

Whoever called them ‘predatory’ has hit the nail on the head for me. Whenever I see one it just reminds me of this…it’s the eyes…I truly believe they see us as prey.

It's almost ALWAYS an XL Bully or XL pit bull cross involved.

My friend was bitten by a Whippet recently when stepping in to stop a fight between two female Whippets who had previously got along {7 years they had lived peacefully together}

Friend intervened and was bitten on her bare arm - it was just four small puncture wounds {she needed antibiotics}

Another friend intervened in a dog fight {Between males , a Labrador and a Daschund} again, a bare arm was bitten - but not the ''shark bite'' type lacerations one sees from Pit bulls and XL Bullies.

Plastic surgeon demands lethal XL Bully dogs are banned

Richard Baker claims his clinic in Slough treats two people a week who have been mauled by dogs in an 'unrelenting flow' of attacks that 'must be costing the NHS a fortune'.

Again, regarding that Instagram account. That dog is merely tolerating those around it. It's constantly looking into the distance and on alert or staring at the woman taking photos as if sizing her up. It's barely interacting with those little girls, just tolerating them for the time being. It doesn't show any emotion or connection. It seems to have a cold intelligence and would rather be somewhere else. I'm tempted to follow that account just to see how long the status quo lasts before it goes berserk.

How much have attacks/deaths reduced since the restrictions around these dogs were started ? The attacks are now taking place inside homes ? These dogs need to be euthanised to protect children. Or a total ban on them in any home where a child lives or visits.

I could not agree more.

Firstimpressions · 04/11/2024 23:52

Please all XL bully owners try to understand when people read repeated instances of children & adults & other dogs either being severly injured or killed by this breed its only natural for them to feel outraged. The least you can do is never ever allow them out without a muzzle & keep them on a lead. If your dog took an unexpected turn & killed either a member of your family or a child playing in a park you would have to live with it on your conscience for the rest of your life along with being responsible for your dog being taken away & put to sleep. Please just do the right thing & muzzle up.

MrsPeregrine · 04/11/2024 23:53

I have to regularly walk my children through a park to walk them to school. I live in fear of coming across one of those dogs, knowing the damage they could do to a small child. The current ban didn’t go far enough.

That woman is exactly the type of person to own a bully dog. Filters, fillers and thick as mince. She doesn’t deserve to have children to put them at risk in that way.

Signing up to Mumsmet to post this.. could Mumsmet run a campaign to cull these dogs?

I have felt anxious about them ever since having a baby, and having walked past a few I’m not convinced they’re anything like most dog breeds. It’s an absolute tragedy that this little girl lost her life.

Edited

I’ve done a quick search online to see if there is already a petition but couldn’t find one. However, disappointingly there are loads of petitions against the current ‘ban’ (if you could call it that) and shockingly, one of the had over 600k signatures.

It’s so true, they are almost always owned by a specific type of person 😔
People who are likely to “go around” the ban and not register their “dog”.
You can’t be normal, as a parent if you choose to have one of those monsters near your children.

I would report to SS if I saw one of those with very young children it should be against the law.

TheDogsBalls · 05/11/2024 00:09

To all the people calling for a cull, you need to wake up, I bet you can't even identify an XL bully, because the government couldn't - what they did was send out a bunch of measurements, and if your dog fit them you could choose to exempt and stick to the rules imposed. We did. Nobody is culling my dog, which might be an XL Bully or not. DNA tests are not admissable.

We rescued a 'staffy x' 3 years ago. When I took him to the vets after eventually gaining the right from his disgustingly, cruel abusive owner, I asked what she thought his breed was. She said she thought he was a Staffordshire Bull Terrier crossed with an American Staffordshire Bull Terrier. She identified him by her knowledge and his 'mascara'.

When the DEFRA measurements came out we chose to exempt him, and only because we wanted to safeguard him (he fit the height measurements). He was already chipped and neutered and so we only had to pay for liability insurance and he would need to be muzzled and tethered in public. Fortunately, we don't have to tether and muzzle him because we have available private fields for him to run and be free.

I've been to university twice and my DH is an engineer. We own our own business. We are not stupid or irresponsible. We've all been done over by the lax rules about dog ownership that the government(s) enforce or don't. This ban was meant to mean tough sentences for the people who decided to ignore the rules and it doesn't seem to be the case.

Whilst I'm a firm believer that it isn't breed and it is the way the dog is handled, I know many will disagree, but it doesn't negate the fact that people aren't being sentenced sufficiently for their our of control dogs, even though rules were put in place.

Nobody is going to cull my dog, and I'd unregister from the exemption, pay £££s and go to court if needed to prove he isn't a threat.

Firstimpressions · 05/11/2024 00:09

Please can someone explain more about the ban on owning an XL bully & what it means to current owners. Is it for example against the law across the whole of the UK to take them out without a muzzle? Rules & consequences etc

No, that dog doesn't look remotely stressed, not even in the slightest! It looks relaxed & at ease. It's not even showing any stress markers at the sparklers which is pretty unusual.

I agree we're at a point where I don't know what should be done about XL's but still - that dog in all the videos has no flags (also has ears & a tail. I'd be curious to know how many that have killed still have both)

You had a certain time to register for exemption...Beginning of this year?

After exemption the dog needs to be neutered, microchipped and it must be tethered and muzzled in public. You need public liability insurance.

This is England only. Scotland made a move after us, but I don't know their rules.

Consequences equal dog being confiscated and PTS, and prison/fines.
