I will never understand the mindset of people who have dogs like these around children.

We have a Newfoundland. We are vigilant with her around the children because she's a dog, and even though they are bred to be gentle they are still animals and thus unpredictable. A breed designed to be aggressive should be nowhere near children.

That poor girl. She must have been so terrified.

I would be very wary of this neighbourhood dog however if this woman has a small scratch then she wasn’t attacked .
she may have been jumped on , dogs nails can scratch accidentally which isn’t great , their nails need trimming

Thankyou.

A stray cat pulled out an artery in my arm and I got sepsis a few years ago while helping the RSPCA catch the stray cat. My scar is bigger than her scratch, and I didn't really know what to say to her! Or what to think!

I did adopt the stray cat afterwards though, much to the RSPCA ladies bemusement. The cat is sat on me now, docile as a sloth. They chopped his balls off, I figured tit for tat. And I went to catch the cat, he didn't go for me, he was just trying to run away.

I don't like this neighbours dog btw, it just seems a bit weird that the other neighbour is saying it went for her but she has a tiny scratch.

I do think something needs to be done about the XL bullies, but I have no idea what.

A pp suggestion of an approved dog breed list seems a good idea going forward. Start consulting, and then implementing in 10-15 years. I don't know what you'd do in the meantime though.

Fizbosshoes · 04/11/2024 19:20

Even before the restrictions a large majority of attacks happened inside people's homes.

I don't know what the answer is, the type of person who gets a dog from someone at the pub, is very likely not the type of person who will register it , or get a licence, or take it to training classes.
And, by virtue of having such a dangerous dog, they won't be the most approachable people to challenge if you suspect they aren't abiding by the conditions set out!
(Can you even train-out natural instincts in an adult - or any - dog anyway?)

I work in retail and have a lady come in with her 3 kids (they are aged about 8/9,5/6 and the youngest is in a buggy)

Lovely lady, sweet kids and I've got to know her and the kids well

She's only gone and got not one,but 3 of these dogs

'They are amazing round kids','it's the owner, not the dogs' 'it was only a few years ago that insert breed had a bad rep,but i dont like them-they are dangerous-i read about them in the daily mail' and 'my dogs wouldnt hurt a fly' (she also rants that her dogs are well trained so shouldn't have to wear muzzles-they dont while loose in the house)

She's taken all 6 (the kids and the dogs) to those marches round our local park and freely admits to leaving the kids with the dogs while she goes to the loo or is cooking dinner

It's only a matter of time before she's a child down and is dogless-and hopefully in fucking prison

Ergh this makes me so effing angry. What’s worse than a bred-to-kill xl bully around children? A pack of the bloody things who are more likely to attack and kill because there are 3 of them. Any parent whose child is killed by the family ‘pet’ should go to prison for manslaughter. I hope this girl’s parents live with unbearable guilt for the rest of their lives

To put this in perspective more people are killed or maimed by horses than dogs in the UK.

😂 You're a bit special aren't you?! 😅

I am absolutely terrified of these dogs, that poor little girl. My sister is mates with some people who have one, admittedly whenever I see photos it's got one of those ginormous muzzles on. But when I see my little niece cuddling it it makes me sick. My BIL is the type to say the dog would never do anything.

I'm so scared of bumping into one with my daft goldie who hasn't a clue which dogs are friendly and which are not.

Perhaps your sister should read this as your niece could well be stressing the dog out by cuddling it

I cringe when I see photos or videos of dogs being hugged as most of the time the oblivious owners have no idea the poor dogs are giving off "I'm not comfortable with this" vibes

Research Confirms It: Dogs Don't Like Being Hugged

Most show signs of stress in hugs; many try to bite.

It's so unfair people aren't allowed to protect themselves & their children in the face if an xl bully attack. I've found out carrying pepper spray is illegal. Carrying actual cayenne pepper is not illegal. How about throwing cayenne pepper in its face if it attacks, would that work? Anything that would prevent the attacks & deaths of adults, children & other dogs.

These dogs are so focussed when they attack that even bullets fired directly into them won't force them to let go. You have to kill them in order to get them off. Pepper spray, hairspray whatever might sting but once those jaws have locked and the dog is into a killing frame of mind they don't care. They literally don't feel it. They cannot break focus. I suppose a taser might work but we can't walk around with tasers just in case we might meet a Bully. They are dangerous.

I have a very prey driven terrier. She's trained, she's fine, but if she's hunting then you can shout yourself inside out, she's not coming back until she's lost the scent. These dogs are like that, only with blood.

Fizbosshoes · 04/11/2024 19:31

We're expected to spend hundreds, even thousands, to learn how to drive. Many more thousands spent on insurance, fines for wrong doing, ceased licence for serious or repeated offences.
But any idiot can get a dog. Any dog.
And a family loses a loved one.
It's just tragic.

I imagine there is some crossover between people who think XL bullies are great pets to have, and those who think car insurance and MOTs and boring shit like that is unneccessary

Oh well that’s alright then! 🙄 That totally justifies the reason why people should keep a banned breed of dog instead of a horse… NOT!

Horses aren’t bred to kill! They are not carnivorous and do not have killer instincts. They constantly live in flight mode not fight mode and if they kill someone it’s not because they just randomly decided to turn and attack someone, it’s usually because they got spooked! You cannot compare the two animals! One is a natural heard animal whose natural instinct is to run away, the other one is not!

fiddleleaffig · 04/11/2024 19:32

I think the law should change so that it is illegal to own one of these dogs if there are under 18s in the home.

Another child's life gone because of selfish parents who think an xl bully makes a family pet. That poor girl paid for her parents awful decision and it should not be allowed.

They aren't safe, but at least adults can decide if they want to live with one and take the risk. A child can't. They should be banned from being near children

BelgianBiscuit · 04/11/2024 19:33

@Fizbosshoes you can't out train genetics.

ChampaignSupernova · 04/11/2024 19:34

I am not a believer in wiping out animals that kill humans but there is a different between the odd predator attacking a human when they enter the predators territory and a breed of dog that has been so over bred from one line that it's caused issues within the breed. These dogs have been let down by humans but it's time they were all euthanased or tighten the laws so anyone who owns one cannot have children, vulnerable or elderly living or entering the same premises. If a fit and healthy 30 year old wants to take a gamble so be it but you don't gamble a child's life

And what about over 18s who keep them and are unable to control them so they just end up killing some random child who is happily playing in the local park. They shouldn’t be owned by anyone.

I have a small tin of the boots version of deep heat spray - its a smaller tin than deep heat but will burn eyes etc and obvs I only have it in my dog walking bag for my knees...

I used to carry a small tin of hairspray, but attacks happen so fast that grappling in your bag for a spray, getting the lid off and orienting it in the right direction takes time..
Maybe the previous Poster ( Belgian biscuits?? ) who trains Protection dogs might have an idea as to what is best.

Deep heat would probably work for a non dog fighting breed.

Getonwitit · 04/11/2024 19:35

The thick parents should be dragged through the courts for endangering their children. The parents are 100% to blame here.

HellofromJohnCraven · 04/11/2024 19:36

We had a facebook post last week where one had escaped and was roaming around the neighbourhood. Apparently according to the morons of FB, the person who had called the dog warden were putting a death penalty on the poor lamb and should have taken it into their home.
That's what you are up against.
That poor child. What a horrific way to die.

Toastandbutterand · 04/11/2024 19:38

So just to check...

The best thing to do if the dogs attacking someone else is to twist the collar and pull up?

And you're buggered if it's attacking you.

Is that right?

BelgianBiscuit · 04/11/2024 19:40

I use a break stick for dogs who don't 'out'. It's used as a crowbar on their molars. If a dog has a good grip it can be lifted, slammed, screamed at and it won't readjust.

SoporificLettuce · 04/11/2024 19:41

Kill them. Kill them all.
Don't let one more child die.

I don't have dogs, is that putting a stick in it's mouth and using it as a lever?

While I agree with the gist of what you are saying, it has to be said that some horses are absolute bastards. You can’t turn your back on them. Obviously not life threatening but I have had some extremely painful unprovoked bites. I have never been bitten by a dog.

CandidaAlbicans2 · 04/11/2024 19:46

I don't agree with an "approved breed list" as I predict people would be even less risk aware than they are now simply because the dogs on the list would be "great with kids" etc. I can imagine these owners letting their kids cuddle and crawl all over the dogs thinking they're bomb-proof.

I follow a dog groomer on YouTube who does complementary grooms for difficult dogs and she said she has more trouble with Golden Retrievers than any other breed. Her theory is that people get them due to their great reputation but then because of that they don't put the work in to socialise and train properly. I mean, why would you need to do any of that because goldies are guaranteed to be great, right 😉

Caveat: I'm not likening GRs to XL bullies BTW. Totally different kettle of fish.

BelgianBiscuit · 04/11/2024 19:47

@Toastandbutterand you straddle the dog, hold it's collar, insert behind their back teeth ( their mouth is open) and turn it. It looks a bit like a large flat knife.
