Personally I find them very tedious as I have a toddler.

Sigh.

I like properly organised events, but 100 random garden displays really wind me up! The noise!

It’s not fun anymore when it’s constant. I love fireworks, always go to the real display, I don’t love hearing bangs in local gardens for weeks on end. Until I moved NW I hadn’t experienced this either so perhaps those defending it don’t realise how irritating it is in the parts of the country where it’s weeks on end of it.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 03/11/2024 20:17

We have sold far less fireworks this year than we have in the last 10 years. Not sure if its due to COL or people moving away from garden party to organised displays or probably a combination of both.

Patienceinshortsupply · 03/11/2024 20:19

I had all of my grandchildren to stay last night as DD was on a night shift. I'd just got the last one to sleep at 10.30pm (bedtime started at 6.30pm) and then some fucker let a load of fireworks off waking up the youngest back up and giving me another hour of soothing.

If I'd have known who it was I'd have sat outside their house at 2am blasting my car horn and shouting hurrah over and over.

Greyrockin · 03/11/2024 20:20

Where i am they start at 1.30pm, while it's still light. They've been going on for days and nights up until around 1:30am, it's incessant.

SpoonHeader · 03/11/2024 20:21

BalletCat · 03/11/2024 19:17

And how do we teach livestock and horses to cope with the noise when they can't hide inside?

How do we teach people with PTSD to cope with the banging? I've been reduced to tears today with the banging which took me right back to being hit by a car a few weeks ago. I'm certainly not the only person with PTSD who will be terrified.

Fireworks should be limited to 5th November and New year. I am absolutely fed up of it, it gets worse wach year, weddings all summer long also.

garlictwist · 03/11/2024 20:22

They go off all night every night where I am from October onwards. The other day some were going off at 6am!

Ridley4 · 03/11/2024 20:23

In Australia they are banned in most states for private use - I so wish the UK could follow this.

They are meant to finish at 11 pm, this is what annoys me when they are going on later, selfish people

ExtraOnions · 03/11/2024 20:25

….more “livestock” is killed in one hour for the meat industry, than have been scared to death by fireworks. I’m sure being shipped to the abattoir is much more stressful. Worried about animals, start campaigning against the meat trade

It was awful last night here.
Our poor cat was terrified.

Selfish bastards, the lot of them.

Fireworks have been going on here since the 28th October for Diwali. There is an organised display here tonight. I think 3rd November is fine, considering Guy Fawkes' Night is the 5th November?

For bonfire night, if its not November 5th, what's the point?

NeckolasCage · 03/11/2024 20:28

I like them. They’re great to see. Minor excitement!

Most animals are fine with them - there’s a thread on this at the moment.

It’s really weird how much people love to complain about them. It just wasn’t a thing even ten years ago. So strange.

Gingertam · 03/11/2024 20:29

I just wish they weren't so loud. Poor cat goes under the bed for hours when they go off. Wish it was just one night a year. We don't get as many round here that we used to. Even the 5th wasn't too bad last year. Fingers crossed there won't be loads this year.

TeenLifeMum · 03/11/2024 20:29

I love fireworks - families coming together for annual enjoyment. Dog is trained and was exposed to fireworks early in life. He’s a gun dog so maybe they’re more resilient to the noise 🤷🏻‍♀️

The moaning is tedious. On mn and fb groups you’d think everyone hates them but then you look at the numbers attending events and you have to consider that perhaps the moaners are in the minority. Most hilarious are those with toddlers, do you think no one else ever had a toddler?

Many of us recall when you just had fireworks on 5th November and at midnight on New years eve.

Spreading it out is annoying and ruining the specialness. It's like not saving your presents for Christmas day.

So you’d ban Diwali?
they’ve always been held on weekends either side of the 5th as it’s more practical/convenient for families and young children to enjoy, and competing events stagger the event so they can run effectively (usually raising lots of money for charities).

I don't know anything about it. Why can't they light a candle in the mean time and wait for the fireworks on 5th November?

KendraTheVampyrSlayer · 03/11/2024 20:33

They start here in the beginning of October and don't end until around a week after Bonfire night. It's horrendous for my poor dog.

When are you recollecting? My dad was only saying the other day that the big displays in the 1970s/80s were the weekend closest to the 5th and on the 5th people did them at home.

suburburban · 03/11/2024 20:34

@SpoonHeader

Totally agree. Yes light some candles

Why are there so many and why do they go on so late even on weekdays

They don't care. It's pure cruelty.

Because their religion is not linked to guy Fawkes? What a weird comment.

suburburban · 03/11/2024 20:36

I thought it was a festival of lights

I don't do pronouns and other people's religions. How odd that you expect us not to have freedom of beliefs?

Surely on a festival of lights you can light a candle on the day and save the fireworks for when the rest of the country traditionally set off the fireworks?

notanothernamechange24 · 03/11/2024 20:02

@Justcallmebebes so because you personally haven't known anyone or any pets die that makes them ok? 🙄 Right o! Why does something personally have to affect you for you to open your mind to the possibility it might affect others?

Yep, they're OK. I have never known anyone moan about fireworks and their snowflake pets apart from on mumsnet
