Personally I find them very tedious as I have a toddler.

Sigh.

I like properly organised events, but 100 random garden displays really wind me up! The noise!

Yep, they're OK. I have never known anyone moan about fireworks and their snowflake pets apart from on mumsnet

Imagine going into a shop and buying a gun... Because that's essentially the same as fireworks. Explosives.

So bad for the environment and very dangerous.

What is that supposed to mean exactly?

Would you go and buy a gun in your local Asda?

I don't do pronouns and other people's religions. How odd that you expect us not to have freedom of beliefs?

Surely on a festival of lights you can light a candle on the day and save the fireworks for when the rest of the country traditionally set off the fireworks?

wow, so you’re an openly disrespectful individual but you want others to respect your beliefs? Interesting stance.

I find it disrespectful to have to listen to worship of a demon yes, why can't they light a candle out of interest, why do they insist we all listen to banging for days?

5th November has turned into a secular event and I would prefer fireworks limited to that date and new year.

Jifmicroliquid · 03/11/2024 20:49

The responses from some people on these threads tells me all I need to know about them. Selfish, inconsiderate scum who think that their right to ‘fun’ comes before the welfare of other living beings.
They couldn’t care less about terrified animals or people/children/babies, because it’s their ‘right’ to have fun. A sign of our selfish society that just seems to be getting worse. Humans are the most vile species on this planet. I’ve already read about several dead pets as a result of fireworks this weekend- people’s beloved animals who never did any harm to anybody, and now they are gone, because some idiot humans wanted to watch things banging in the sky. God only knows how much wildlife is lost.

Leave the fireworks to organised displays. People can still have their ‘fun’ there. But every Tom, Dick and Harry should not be able to set off explosives in their back yard.

I thought the government cared about the environment. Letting the public buy explosives is insane.

Diwali, also known as Deepawali, is a major festival celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and some Buddhists:

Hinduism: Diwali celebrates the return of Rama and Sita to Ayodhya after Rama killed the demon Ravana and won back his wife. The festival symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.

Jainism: Diwali is a significant festival in Jainism.

Sikhism: Diwali celebrates the victory of Guru Hargobind in 1619, when he refused to leave prison until he was able to bring all of the princes with him.

Horrible, selfish people. And then we get threads like 'why are kids so badly mannered now'. It's no wonder.

….more “livestock” is killed in one hour for the meat industry, than have been scared to death by fireworks. I’m sure being shipped to the abattoir is much more stressful. Worried about animals, start campaigning against the meat trade

So all suffering up until death is permissable? I'm a vegetarian.

I understand people have pets and don’t like fireworks but they are available to buy and people are going to buy them to enjoy. We had fireworks last weekend and someone came and shouted abuse over the gate. I mean, really? It was a week early but it’s that time of year. If I had a pet, I would probably hate them too but anticipate them and deal with it.

Would you be against buying a gun in Asda or Tesco ? What is the difference exactly to buying fireworks and buying a gun?

Fireworks have never (in my lifetime or my parent’s lifetime) been just on 5 Nov. They happen the weekend closest. The number of people attending these events (often raising money for charities) suggests you are not in the majority. I’ve never met anyone in rl who holds these opinions.

CatamaranViper · 03/11/2024 21:05

I love fireworks. I only go to the local organised display and honestly I don't think I've heard fireworks going off outside of this.
We had our display tonight. I'm always amazed by people who say they've basically had non-stop fireworks since October. Despite living in several cities and towns I've never experienced this.

We have a yard of horses to think about too, not just animals in the house.

I wish people would stick to the one night. It’s hard enough managing animals on a night that you expect the fireworks, but it’s very hard to manage it when it’s happening days and weeks in advance. We get medication off our vet for our dogs, but we can’t medicate them every night for a week. At least if it was just the one night, people would have a fighting chance of dealing with it.
We’ve had fireworks every night around here since last Wednesday and it will carry on now til after the 5th.
Yet if we dare raise our frustration at this, we get called ‘moaners’ or ‘boring’. I don’t think wanting to protect the welfare of animals is either of those things, personally.

Guns aren’t available to buy in your local supermarket so an irrelevant point.

You have never heard or read these opinions, because you aren't a mind reader, it doesn't mean that people haven't been silently seething for years.

Someone can use whatever pronouns they want, I don't want to participate with my words.

Someone can light candles and worship their demons, why should my ears be involved in it?

Have some respect and save the fireworks for the 5th November and new year, please.

Guns in 2023 killed 46,700+ people in the usa
firework accidents (not deliberate) killed 8 in the same period in the USA. They are not the same thing at all 🙄😂🙈

Autumnismyfavouritetimeofyear · 03/11/2024 21:09

I am sure I read that they being made louder and maybe it is they way streets are built where I am in the Midlands, but the sound bounces around and that is what seems to get my rescue dog so upset. I can prepare her for the organized displays, but when they are randomly in someones garden, it is hard to sort that out. We are using medication to help which seems to be making a difference but the ones earlier sounded like they were in our front room. When I lived in California you could not buy them, only go to organized displays, and I never had any trouble with my pets.

Theunamedcat · 03/11/2024 21:10

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 03/11/2024 19:05

Where on earth do you live where there are '100 random, garden, firework displays' all in one night? Confused

A housing estate! the big display isn't happening due to lack of voulenteers this year so everyone who couldn't find ten minutes or a couple of hours to help out has hosted a display in their tiny garden which means your neighbour gets a better view than you and there will be sticks and burnt pieces all over the cars tomorrow 😀 still at least "the kiddies" had some fun

Please can you stop referring to other religions as devil worship? You're being purposely offensive.

You must be incredibly thick to not realise the comparisons I am making.

Why do you think guns are illegal to buy in this country?
