MIL only one not to say my baby looks like me

My MIL never says my baby looks like me. Everyone else - friends, family, strangers, says he’s the spit of me but I noticed she stays quiet and only comments that he looks like her son / my DH and at a push, that he looks like both of us. It’s starting to annoy me, and wonder whether it’s a slight at me, am I being silly? DH isn’t insecure at all that people say he looks more like me and joins in.

One of the many unhinged my MIL did after my first son was born was corner me in a hallway with an envelope of photos of DH to PROVE to me that my son didn't look like me and only looked like DH because she was SICK of people suggesting that my son looked like me.

Funniest part is that I am dark and son is dark but DH is blonde hair blue eyes. It's a pretty obvious difference.

But only one in a very long list of unhinged things she did.

Sounds like fairly typical behaviour for some mums of sons! Grin

Shows massive insecurity, and desperation to claim the grandchild as part of HER family, and not the nasty daughter-in-law's family. 😆

CurbsideProphet · 02/11/2024 23:12

A few people were insistent that newborn DS looked only like DH and nothing like me. They told me repeatedly... He now has my hair and it is noticeable, but MIL insists this is due to DH's genes 😀

If I met a newborn now would just say what a lovely mix of both parents. There's no real need to say anything further/ insist baby looks more like one parent than the other.

But did you approach it that you were 'absolutely sick of people suggesting that he could possibly look like anything like you'

Or were you calm and reasonable?

I was calm and reasonable when I spoke to her, but inside I was absolutely sick of it 🤣.

My son didn't look like any member of the family in particular as a child, but by the time he was 18 he was the image of my own father - his grandfather. Comparing photos of the two at the same age you'd think they were the same person. It's rather spooky.
My own grandchildren looked like my son in law as tiny babies, they both had his heavy brow, but changed by the time they were about 3.
On the whole, unless there is some very distinctive family feature, I think babies are pretty similar.

wishuponamoon21 · 02/11/2024 23:28

Mine does this. My son is literally my clone but with different coloured eyes (my DH colour) but she will never say that he looks like me. He is also very very tall, she thinks it's to do with some distant relative being tall or something. Yet both of my siblings and both of my grandfather's are over 6ft. You just have to laugh it off!

CheshireCat1 · 02/11/2024 23:37

Your baby looks like himself, he’s an individual.

He isn't literally your clone, FFS.

Excuse me? Have you met me or my child? Those words have been used by my health visitor and several other people, I didn't come up with that one on my own! Get a life!

GettingStuffed · 02/11/2024 23:53

As a mother you see the parts of a baby which resemble you, as a gran you recognise the bits that remind you of your baby. For instance my granddaughter was the spitting image of me at the same age, so much so that she though a photo of me was of her. All her friends said how much she looks like her mother. Now she's older she looks like me but with her mother's eyes and her father's grin.

The poster means a clone has a technical definition which your child won’t meet if they were the product of a conception involving their dad.

IridescentRainbow · 02/11/2024 23:57

When I was a small child my mum got fed up with her mother in law always saying that my brother and I looked like our dad. Eventually she said “You are right! They DO look like your side of the family!……If they looked like mine they would be beautiful!” 😂

Coatsoff42 · 02/11/2024 23:58

Do you have a big round head, no hair and cry a lot? If so you are not being unreasonable.

Lots of people have used this term throughout this thread. Yet I am the one picked up on it. Of course I did not produce my child without my husband. However, if I were to produce him in a lab, a "technical clone", he would look exactly the same! Definitely has my DH personality though.

T1Dmama · 03/11/2024 00:07

EVERYONE (except my mum) says my daughter looks like me… I don’t see it… my mum says she’s spit of her dad… I also don’t see that…. Physically she’s the dead spit of her dad, but facially I think she’s a healthy mix of us both…
she also saw your DH as a baby so might see resemblances others don’t

It's because you said "literally my clone". Literally has a definition, as has clone.
