I am sure there will be many on MN who have views, if threads in previous years are an indication. So I'll start the discussion here.

My opinion is that there should be designated days only, and organised displays. Probably no more than five or six such days a year. Allows for celebration, reduces possibility of injury, and warning so you can be indoors when they happen and protect any person or animal.

But thats as irrelevant as to banning fireworks as is banning cars cos someone ran over somebody, or guns cos someone was shot.

But you can't buy a Gun in Morrisons for £8 can you, that's the point they are cheap to buy and accessible.....hence why posters are saying they shouldn't be so readily available to the public.

Petition here with over a million signatures so far. Due to be delivered at Number 10 on 5th November

For the last three nights my dog has had to crawl into the back of her crate and hide and can’t go out to the toilet after 6pm because inconsiderate people are letting fireworks off, we live in a small village there was an organised display on Saturday, but still other households are doing their own fireworks, I can hear other dogs barking all over out of fright and what about people who have cats and other wildlife and horses. When I was. A kid in the 70s everyone kept their cat in on bonfire night, now you’d have to keep your cat in for a week. It’s unfair, it’s inconsiderate and they should be banned to the general public, and laws strictly enforced if anyone uses them outside of a notified display so you know when it’s gonna, so you what to prepare for. Personally I prefer not to hear what sounds like bombs and gunfire going off or feel like I am a prisoner in my house for 7 nights in November.

Lickthips · 03/11/2024 19:39

Banning fireworks is no more reasonable than banning people keeping cats and dogs. At least fireworks are only a public nuisance for a handful of nights a year.

EmpressaurusDelleGatte · 03/11/2024 19:53

I don’t think anyone’s suggesting banning fireworks. Just limiting them to licensed displays & having a maximum noise level.

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 03/11/2024 20:07

I'm kind of neutral on them.

I dont find them exciting or interesting and haven't since I was a kid. It is cool to see them in the sky from a distance.

I know they're bad for the environment and animals and one of my animals really dislikes them.

Buggeroffandleavemealone · 03/11/2024 20:21

I hate them. My dog is having a panic attack, shaking uncontrollably, panting, wide eyes.

But I understand that other people like them.

What I would like is that either fireworks are only licensed for sale to organised displays so no random fireworks in neighbours gardens OR that if anyone can buy them then they can only be used on one day e.g 5th November.

They've been going off here since Friday and this will probably continue until at least next weekend which is too long.

Whilst I can appreciate some are pretty etc there is no need for anyone to buy and use "bangers" which are so load they sound like a small bomb has gone off.

That is my view and designated days. On those ones you know to expect noise and your pet can be kept indoors.

I think all domestic ones should be banned 😂 they're a pile of dung anyway and I just don't see the appeal. Should not be sold to the public at all.

That being said, I don't actually feel that passionately about it overall! That is just my general stance on it.

CurlewKate · 03/11/2024 20:33

Actually, I would ban them. it’s a very active and quite vicious discussion on our local FB page, with lots of people saying things like “all you have to do is train your dog not to be afraid” and “just put your horse in the stable overnight”. The ignorance being shown has firmed my previous slight preference towards a desire for a compete ban. I don’t think people can be trusted to be responsible. Full disclosure-I know a horse that lost an eye when she panicked and tried to break through a hedge.

goneaway2 · 03/11/2024 23:19

This is why they should be banned, or at least the maximum noise level made lower. Animals should not be dieing for other peoples 'fun'. Argh, mumsnet won't keep the photo. A lady lost her whippet to a stroke due to Fireworks this year.

EyeofOrion · 03/11/2024 23:36

The other night a neighbour threw a firework into a firepit (this is the theory, anyway), resulting in an almighty boom that shook my house, brought out the local fire brigade and was heard as far as 15 miles away. They followed up with four more for good measure.

So, no, I don’t like fireworks that much - particularly in the hands of stupid people.

Problem is the Cat 4 display only ones are being sold on the black market.
These will clearly be extra dangerous in a confined private garden.

I'm pretty sure my neighbour's firework display has damaged my car - there was powder all over the bonnet and some areas with no varnish like stone chips. Not important in the grand scheme of things of course when all these poor animals are dying of fright and shock.

BurntBroccoli · 05/11/2024 09:24

ALL the comments on Facebook I've received telling me to get a grip or that I'm a snowflake when I complain about the danger to wildlife and animals, have been men.

How many of you (women) have actually lit a firework? If they weren't coloured and just white would you still like them?

edwinbear · 05/11/2024 09:29

I like fireworks and have previously bought them for private displays in the garden. But honestly, I think the world has moved on now. Too easy for people (including kids) to buy them and use them as weapons, too many injuries when untrained people make mistakes setting them off. I'd support a ban to the general public and organised events only.

Mostly men, but I have noticed quite a few women getting involved on the “it’s for kids, let them have fun” brigade. Mostly with a lot of spelling mistakes and grammatical errors.

Spinet · 05/11/2024 15:10

I am a woman and I've lit a firework. What a weird question.

RichardOsmansFreakishlyBigHand · 01/11/2024 19:18

They're a bunch of killjoys. Have you heard modern cars that have been remapped to make pops and bangs? They frighten the life out of you when you're walking down the street and they drive by, its usually on overrun off throttle so they're not going fast but it sounds like a gunshot. But they're legal so nobody cares too much.

They're not legal, they'd fail their MOT. They clearly go to dodgy garages or get the cars altered for the MOT, or just don't have one.

Perhaps a law banning fireworks could reintroduce a dog licencing system as well Grin

HotTopicsWithImogen · 06/11/2024 13:44

Or introduce a law allowing silent dogs only.

FasterFa · 06/11/2024 14:15

What's the issue with lighting fireworks in your garden at night? Obviously I don't support people using them as weapons.

But in the privacy of your own garden... It's bad because it upsets other people's pets?

"A handful of nights"!!!! Really?

Maybe where you live it's only a handful of nights but in other places we get fireworks going off night after night for weeks.

🙄

I think that comment was a reference to dogs barking? Few things can more of a racket than a dog.
