To ask your views on fireworks?

I am sure there will be many on MN who have views, if threads in previous years are an indication. So I'll start the discussion here.

My opinion is that there should be designated days only, and organised displays. Probably no more than five or six such days a year. Allows for celebration, reduces possibility of injury, and warning so you can be indoors when they happen and protect any person or animal.

"A handful of nights"!!!! Really?

Maybe where you live it's only a handful of nights but in other places we get fireworks going off night after night for weeks.

So out of 365, how many nights?

mydogisthebest · 06/11/2024 16:00

A barking dog is annoying but nowhere near as annoying as the fireworks that sound like bombs going off and shake windows.

Most dogs are not as dangerous as fireworks either and I have never heard of mindless yobs throwing dogs at people, at cars, through letterboxes, at police, firemen, paramedics etc.

Far too many. When it is night after night after night after night for at least a couple of weeks are people with nervous pets really meant to tranquilise them every day?

What should people with horses do? What about all the wildlife?

Some dogs can be dangerous though if they’re not trained properly (as you sure you know) same as fireworks are dangerous in the hands of idiots who chuck them about.

What's the issue with lighting fireworks in your garden at night? Obviously I don't support people using them as weapons.

But in the privacy of your own garden... It's bad because it upsets other people's pets?

Because people are stupid and cannot be trusted with explosives.

What about the poor wildlife, who have no choice.

Humans are selfish.

They terrify wildlife, cause fires and accidents, and leave detritus in streets, parks, and green spaces.

What's not to love?

With the exception of fires no different from dogs then but they also kill people and cause disease on top I suppose.

Hurrah, I was missing ticking “shaking windows” off my fireworks spreadsheet!
I wish firework haters would cut the hyperbole; it does you no favours.
And next doors dog barks or whines every single day without exception. They leave it home alone and do nothing to train it

I'm not too fussed about the impact on wildlife tbh.

Not in relation to this quote but your quote saying you aren't fussed about wildlife, how can you be so cruel?

Are you always this selfish? I bet you're teaching your offspring these warped views as well.

The bomb type fireworks do shake my windows and my house is not even that old and, yes, I have heard a bomb going off so know exactly what they sound like. No need whatsoever for them.

There have been stories in the papers today of yobs throwing fireworks at police, at people in the street etc. A poster above posted a link to a story about a woman dying after a firework was pushed through her letterbox.

There was a story on my local facebook page of a pregnant horse miscarrying after she bolted from her field in fear because of fireworks.

I could give many other examples but there is no point with people like you.

I am sorry your neighbour's dog is a nuisance but it's not causing fear and distress to other animals, young children etc is it?

Maybe where you live it's only a handful of nights but in other places we get fireworks going off night after night for weeks.

Hence my view of designated days. You know November 5th and New Year's Eve will have them, you can plan accordingly and they are not a surprise. Same should apply for other days- you would know.

Come on, we all know that dogs kill and injure thousands of other animals and young children each year. And adults

Of course I know some dogs can be dangerous but I am fairly certain that nowhere near the amount of wildlife, horses, cows, sheep etc are caused distress and fear by dogs as are by fireworks.

GiantHornets · 06/11/2024 18:02

Why is the reason because of this? Humans. It's not the dogs fault, blame the humans.

Humans are so selfish and stupid sometimes.

henlake7 · 06/11/2024 18:08

Why pick on dogs?
Cars are also noisy and cause many more deaths then fireworks so lets just ban cars!🙄

I cant stand fireworks. I read today that approx 100 horses are killed every year by fireworks. Not to mention affecting bird migrations, causing deaths of wildlife, stress to pets and also the elderly or those with mental health issues.

Im not unrealistic enough to want to ban them but for safety they really should be confined to organized events where precautions can be taken to both inform people and reduce risks.

Thomasina79 · 06/11/2024 18:18

I have the same view on fireworks as my cat. He hates them!

but it’s not the fireworks that are to blame, but the occasional idiot who mis uses them. I think it should be organised displays only

GiantHornets · 06/11/2024 18:36

That was in response to this

How is that logical? Would dogs no longer bite if there were no people?

But humans are to blame for the dogs behaviour.
It's not the dogs fault. Dogs are not trained to bite. They only bite in fear.

This thread is about fireworks. Not dogs.

Mumsnet hates dogs anyway, it's a well known fact.

RedRobyn2021 · 06/11/2024 19:39

My dog has always been fine with them, obviously she'd be a bit distressed if I was out with her and they happened right near her. My cats are fine too as long as they're indoors.

It's once a year for possibly a few days on and off

I'm on several moaning pages on Facebook and loads of people were on there last night moaning about the fireworks

One lady said her neighbours were inconsiderate for not letting her know they were letting off fireworks last night... on bonfire night 😂 I don't think some people realise how ridiculous they are

I think the British are obsessed with their dogs and take better care of them than their own kids in a lot of cases, I love my dog, but view this as rather pathetic. They are a dog, they are a pet. Let people enjoy bonfire night... and I say that as someone who hasn't even celebrated bonfire night since I was a child
