I am sure there will be many on MN who have views, if threads in previous years are an indication. So I'll start the discussion here.

My opinion is that there should be designated days only, and organised displays. Probably no more than five or six such days a year. Allows for celebration, reduces possibility of injury, and warning so you can be indoors when they happen and protect any person or animal.

How big do you think some barns are for animals to all be inside? A sheep farmer with 400 plus animals does not whizz round the day before and put them all away so people can have a hot dog and a firework some livestock is out

@ilovesooty it is only cat 4 fireworks that can't be sold to the public. Cat 3 are fine as long as you can be 25m away from them 👍🏽 modern fireworks are sold as a "cake" you just light it once and then the whole display goes off itself, they are very safe.

Well you are until the cake falls over but its all part of the fun.

Rockets are generally available for £20 to £30 for 4 and they are ridiculously loud. Been a few years since we had some and none of our cats or neighbours ones seemed to care.

@TheDogsPaws they can surely buy a white noise machine to play for the shelter dogs and anyone whose dog gets upset can buy one too. Put it on loud enough and the dog wont hear the fireworks at all...problem solved! As for wildlife they tuck up in their nests and burrows and manage just fine.
The fireworks moaning starts this time every year and it's always so selfish

Selfish?
Whats more selfish than being happy to cause distress to animals and some humans just so you can watch some things banging in the sky? Do you think that it’s ok to cause distress to other living things so you can have ‘fun’?
I wish that putting ‘white noise’ on would drown out the hours of fireworks that people insist on having, but it doesn’t. The fact you think it does shows you know diddly squat about dogs and their hearing.

People like you are the most selfish dregs of society. You think human enjoyment comes before everything. You ought to be ashamed of how you’ve turned out, and no doubt you’re raising children to be as equally as self centred.

I am flabbergasted at how many people believe their right to enjoyment should come before the welfare of others. Humans are vile.

I'm aware of that. I certainly don't think category 3 fireworks should be sold to the public at all.

redkite27 · 01/11/2024 19:32

@ilovesooty is that because you have safety concerns about them or because of the noise aspect?

ItsTheGAGGGGGGGG · 01/11/2024 19:35

I really don’t think they should be sold in the shops for any Tom, Dick and Harry to purchase. Firework fights on the streets have already started in London. I hate how you can be walking on the pavement minding your business then you have to dodge a firework otherwise it’ll take your fucking head off

littleHen84 · 01/11/2024 19:36

I love fireworks. But I think they should be controlled displays only for particular occasions and they should have a licence. And keep the ban at certain times of the night. Or if you randomly wanted a display at home, they could make it a thing where you pay to get people to do the display for you and you have to get permission.

I don’t think anyone should be able to just buy fireworks. They’re dangerous if not used correctly. I dread to think how many people are burnt and injured each year through misuse of fireworks. We get a lot chucked about round ours at all hours, we live by the sea, last year some random set off a firework and someone’s dog ran off and it was found washed up. I know it is rare but I just thought was a senseless and upsetting thing to happen just because someone thought it would be fun to mess around. It wasn’t even a ‘display’ at home, just a random one being set off for fun. And just read this morning about a lady whose mum died after 2 lads popped a lit firework through the door. So I don’t think they’re safe to just be bought at the supermarket.

Oh no, I never heard this story. How horrible!

I have an old school pal on my FB, and one year her teen son literally had a finger blown off from fireworks. She posts his photos in A&E as a warning every year.

MothralovesGojira · 01/11/2024 19:37

In our area the council only allows licences for proper organised displays and not a single shop, garden centre or supermarket has a license to sell to the public. It is bliss. The organised displays are very well attended and are held by a local sports venue, some local schools and the parish council themselves. They're allowed to hold displays on the Friday and Saturday nearest 5th November so everyone knows when they are and where. It's a vast improvement and you have to travel about 10 miles to find a shop that sells to the public in a different council area.

We live in a freer country in England thankfully.

Great message about fireworks

BurntBroccoli · 01/11/2024 19:44

Agree completely. In fact I was just thinking I hope people aren't going to set any off tonight as my cat has just gone out 🙁.

I absolutely detest fireworks. They cause so much suffering to animals and people. We don't need them to be loud as they've made silent ones now.

If you are worried, can't you keep your cat inside?

But this is part of the problem. It’s not bonfire night yet, so why should cats be having to be locked inside for days/weeks around bonfire night just ‘incase’ they go off?

I get sedatives for my dogs, but the reality is I can’t drug them every night for the days leading up to and after bonfire night.

I’m currently sat here listening to a load going off a few streets away. I’m dreading the 5th. It’s been bad here all week already.

BurntBroccoli · 01/11/2024 19:52

@redkite27
I've only just realised that it's probably a fireworks party weekend (despite not being bonfire night).

I absolutely will keep him in from tomorrow night.

redkite27 · 01/11/2024 19:59

@BurntBroccoli Diwali was celebrated yesterday and will be again tonight.

redkite27 · 01/11/2024 19:59

@Jifmicroliquid it's Diwali currently, you can easily confirm the date of that each year.

Expletive · 01/11/2024 20:01

I must admit that all my cats haven’t been bothered by fireworks although I kept them on the night. The last two actually seemed to enjoy watching them. They weren’t frightened at all.

MintTwirl · 01/11/2024 20:04

I love watching fireworks but I am sick of the public misusing them. We have them going off all year round in our area at all times of the day or night, lots of banqueting halls set them off at midnight/1/2am. Nobody in authority caress At thsi tien of year you have the feral teens throwing them at busses and cars and in local parks for fun.

So for me I would like them to be sold for public displays to someone with a license and for those in authority to clamp down on misuse.

Flipzandchipz · 01/11/2024 20:05

@DysonSphere I know it is horrible. I can’t imagine what her family must be going through.

About 10 years ago, a teenager put a firework through my friends letterbox while they were all sleeping. They were awoken by the noise and their dog barking frantically. The dog was mildly injured and their hallway was damaged. It could have been so much worse.

Why are people allowed to buy explosives over the counter?? It makes me so angry.

Interestingly my cats aren’t at all bothered, but 2 of my dogs are really distressed by them.

Vettrianofan · 01/11/2024 20:11

Fireworks only required on two nights every year - Guy Fawkes and Hogmanay. They should be silent ones. No need for fireworks any other time of year.
