I am sure there will be many on MN who have views, if threads in previous years are an indication. So I'll start the discussion here.

My opinion is that there should be designated days only, and organised displays. Probably no more than five or six such days a year. Allows for celebration, reduces possibility of injury, and warning so you can be indoors when they happen and protect any person or animal.

Love them but love animals more so best of both worlds as much as poss is silent fireworks.

freshlaundrysmell · 01/11/2024 08:39

However, I agree that they cause worries for some people and some pets, so they should be confined to designated days - say, bonfire night weekend, Diwali, New Year's etc.

But the point is- if they on sale to the public, you cant control what days they will be setting them off- who is going to police that?

Ostagazuzulum · 01/11/2024 08:40

And organised ones only so not on sale to public. Less injury = less impact on nhs

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 01/11/2024 08:40

I would support organised displays only and quieter ones. The home ones I see out of the window are always pretty shit in comparison to professional ones anyway.

TheDogsPaws · 01/11/2024 08:40

I hate them. I know 2 people who have facial scars from them, one from when a firework went into the crowd at an organised display.

I hate the impact they have on pets and wildlife and they’re also frightening for many older people and children with SEN.

I’d like to see them banned but I know it won’t happen.

Expletive · 01/11/2024 08:41

The restriction to organised displays only virtually killed bonfire night in Australia.

Jessie1259 · 01/11/2024 08:41

We do our own fireworks, we just get a few low noise ones.

There's no such thing as silent fireworks as to propel them there has to be some noise. Calling them silent is misleading.

Our little display is certainly quieter than the pheasant shoots round here though!

ExtraOnions · 01/11/2024 08:41

I love them … we have a Bonfire party every year, and buy lots of firework. I enjoy sitting outside watching ours, and everyone else’s .. as we have a good view over the local towns.

I don’t want to go to an organised display, it’s too busy, never at a time that suits, no seats etc. Not for me.

I’m in my 50s now .. and all a lot safer than it was in the 70s & 80s. I see a lot of rubbish in the street not caused by fireworks, I live near on a main road with extremely noisy motorbikes going past, I’m allergic to most animals but have to put up with dogs being everywhere and cats shitting in my garden - there are loads of examples were other people do things we don’t like ourselves .. that’s living in a society for you.

Wtfdude · 01/11/2024 08:42

I love fireworks. Some people where I lived put displays on even local council could be envious of.
HOWEVER, there should be noise limit. Silent ones exist, use them. The loud ones with basically nothing but sound should be banned.

EmpressaurusDelleGatte · 01/11/2024 08:42

Organised, licensed displays only and quiet fireworks.

My local council does a free display so anyone round here who wants to see fireworks can still see them without having to pay.

dizzydizzydizzy · 01/11/2024 08:42

I love them. I'm pretty sure local bylaws around there only allow fireworks certain weeks of the year - around Diwali and Guy Fawkes and NY.

On the whole, I do think back garden fireworks should be more heavily regulated.

Yup- they need to be banned apart from organised displays- too many injuries, and a horrible effect on animals.

Besides, every single home display I have ever seen has been pathetic and rubbish. I dont know why people even bother doing them at home- you may as well wave a candle about, it gives the same effect but without the stupid noise

InfoSecInTheCity · 01/11/2024 08:43

Well having watched the 2 fire trucks spend a couple of hours extinguishing a neighbours garden the other night after they did a shitty job of controlling the fireworks they bought in Asda, I think that sale to the general public should be banned.

Unfortunately the general public are too stupid to be allowed to buy bombs from the supermarket.

They managed to set fire to a tree and a fence attached to theirs and their next door neighbours house. They are very very lucky they only lost a tree and a fence. It was late evening, everyone was home and the flames came to within a couple inches of 2 houses.

gano · 01/11/2024 08:45

I really love fireworks, but I do think they should be restricted. I don't think they should be on sale to the general public, and should only be used for public displays, with a licence. I also think that noisy fireworks should be banned, and they're should only be silent ones available. The noise is awful for animals, people with ptsd, certain people with dementia etc. A few years ago I had a firework thrown at me by some teenage boys. I was walking my dog at the time and had my 2yr old in the pushchair. My grandmother also had a firework thrown in her face by some lads (albeit a number of years ago) and suffered burns.thus is why I believe they shouldn't be available to the general public.

I agree with all of this. I've only ever had one dog that wasn't bothered by them, all the others have been terrified and our kids are fine if they're in the distance but hate it when neighbours let them off at bedtime.

Organised displays only and limited days/ silent fireworks is the way to go. When I was growing up in the 80s it wasn't like this as people didn't seem to do home displays and it really was only a handful of nights a year. Fireworks started by us a three weeks ago and it's pretty much every other day that they go off. Nightmare for anyone who is afraid of them and can't prepare at all so end up feeling on edge as soon as it gets dark.

Waltdisnerd · 01/11/2024 08:46

I love them.
And they shouldn't be banned.

iwentjasonwaterfalls · 01/11/2024 08:46

I love watching them. We don't go to any displays, but we live on a hill with views over our town and across the bay to a city, so we get to see all the different displays happening all at the same time from the comfort of indoors.

I've seen a lot of people complaining about "Halloween fireworks" yesterday forgetting that Diwali is happening too. When I was young we used to visit my nan in an area with lots of Hindu families and I looked forward to Diwali so much because there would be fireworks!

BoobyDazzler · 01/11/2024 08:47

I like them, but they don’t bother my pets.

clarrylove · 01/11/2024 08:47

Love them! Bit of wonderment in a dreary month. But I live semi rural and we don't get much bother. I would also be disappointed if sensible people couldn't have their own events at home.

And silent fireworks? Pfft. What's the point? They are supposed to be a sensory experience, without the sound they are pretty rubbish imo.

MadamAlf · 01/11/2024 08:47

Waste of money. Organised displays only.

yukikata · 01/11/2024 08:47

Should be low noise ones only on sale to the public.

I don't agree with banning the sale of them just because some people are idiots.

I have really special memories of fireworks in the garden as a kid.

Stopandlook · 01/11/2024 08:48

Love them. The louder the better. But agree, organised displays are the way to go

KoalaCalledKevin · 01/11/2024 08:49

I find fireworks displays quite boring, but have no issue with them happening.

I don't think the public should be able to buy them. Around where I live the last couple of nights we've had people firing them off at cars, at houses, messing around with them in the street etc.
I think maybe they should just be for licensed venues - so if someone wanted them for their wedding or whatever, maybe the venue would be able to do that. I wouldn't restrict it to just New Year's Eve, bonfire night and Diwali for example.

Cocothecoconut · 01/11/2024 08:50

They should not be on sale to anyone who wants them. Some are like small bombs which in the wrong hands could cause serious damage or injury

ns87 · 01/11/2024 08:51

Hate them, it should only be properly organised events at set times.
