Those who believe MN is more leftists, what makes you think so?

ItTook8WibesToKnow7WasEnough · 31/10/2024 16:08

Because to me MN has always come off much more right / conservative.

So, if you can point out what makes it so leftist.

Mumsnet is centre right economically and politically but soft left socially. IMHO.

Which is pretty much were Labour are

Its full of union members and people on benefits.

Well yes, it is a parenting site so many will be getting child benefit. I think there are quite a few people getting the State Pension too.

A lot of the right leaning posters seem to confuse not criticising everything labour do immediately, or agreeing with one or two of their policies, with being a dyed in the wool, life-long, fully paid up Labour supporter.

I mean, I've stated numerous times that, as someone who wants Scottish independence, I'm stuck being a SNP voter. Yet on almost every political thread, certain posters will call me pro-labour if I disagree with their view.

I don't know why this is so unfathomable for the true blues, but some of us are able to be fairly objective when it comes to politics, I'll even criticise SNP policies / actions that I don't agree with, despite voting for the party 🫨.

But I genuinely don't think I've ever seen any of the frequent Tory supporting posters ever say a bad word about the party. Even the indefensible (PPE contracts, partygate, failure to declare interest, etc) is met with either silence, accusations of being pro labour or cries of "what about....X'.

That said, it is quite fun butting heads with some of them, especially the ones who, so blinded by their Tory support / Labour hate, end up contradicting themselves from thread to thread and don't realise it.

Why would I be bothered by an ordinary cat clique, because that’s all that thread is?

You give yourself too much credit.,

Well your moggy doesn't sound too wonderful @ChardonnaysBeastlyCat 😂

CurlewKate · 01/11/2024 15:04

@Mebebecat "Far right, scum, bigots, fascists, racists, thick, knuckle draggers are all terms I hear all the time on here re white working class people that I don't hear anywhere else."

Have you genuinely ever heard language like that on here used to describe people who are not actively engaged in violence or rioting?

Barbadossunset · 01/11/2024 15:07

Yes, anyone who voted Brexit - as you well know.

I don’t have a cat.

Never assume.

For me it’s the constant barrage of abuse anybody gets for suggesting someone works more hours if they are struggling for money.

It's interesting now there's a thanks button - you definitely get a different picture than before. Sometimes I'll find myself accidentally (I don't seek bunfights) disagreeing with everyone on a thread - either because we're talking at cross purposes or I've stumbled across an ideological echo chamber - and it can feel like everyone on MN thinks in just one way.

But those threads are where you get loads and loads of thanks notifications. The lurkers support me in thanks notifications 😂.

So it's more like once a thread starts to go very strongly one way and people are getting aerated, most more moderate people just don't engage, so it snaps into one ideological position quite rigidly. It feels like a consensus but it's not quite the same.

Menopausalsourpuss · 01/11/2024 15:47

I think right wing and left wing are total misnomers these days. To me Labour are globalists working to hand over the country's assets to corporates (mostly foreign owned). Hence tax on small farmers and landlords so that Blackrock etc are the only ones that can afford extra costs and regulations. Climate change used as an excusd to stop us travelling (sure the establishment will carry on though!). Starmer himself said that he prefers Davos to parliament and has been shown to be happy to take bribes (eg Lord Alli). Tories the same.

Pro-abortion, anti-Christian, this is why

Are you non British. I don't think I've ever met anyone who outwardly isn't anti abortion and I've lived here 50 years. It's considered pretty extreme to be anti abortion. Many people still remember the horrors of those years and are affected by them.

You obviously don't get out much. I am anti abortion and was attacked last week here for saying that. Most people who feel similar keep quiet (just like on about of other issues) as they are shouted down and abused. And yes I do care about the children that are born and would be prepared to support them. I am pro women and alot of women are bullied into this by horrible men.

Just look at the long running threads in Chat - Starmer no x threads! They won’t hear a word against Labour, nor a word pro Conservatives.

pointythings · Yesterday 21:03You're completely wrong about that - those threads have a group of posters who are very diverse politically, and they include people who have voted all across the political spectrum in their lives

I disagree, pointythings. Any poster on the Starmer threads who dares criticise Labour gets rounded on by the regulars who know they’ll have the support of each other when sneering at any poster such as Clavinova who may offer a different view.

I'm a regular. Have you actually read those threads in full? There's plenty of criticism of Labour policy on all of them. The only differencesn are is that most of us agree that 1) the current government deserves more than a few months to deal with the fallout from the past 14 years, 2) this government has started doing some good things and 3) the previous government was one of the worst, if not THE worst, in recent political history (I'm talking about from Boris Johnson onwards). I don't think those are extreme positions to take at all.
I think the 'oh we are all doooooomed' posts are far more extreme in their political stance, and their refusal to recognise that any of the changes made by Labour are an improvement is ridiculous. Why can't people give a new government a chance?

Zonder · 01/11/2024 16:21

Exactly @pointythings - we are at least prepared to see some good in the current government and give them a chance to put their ideas into practice.

You were disagreed with. It was pointed out to you that banning abortion kills women. You have a right to your point of view, but that doesn't mean you can close your mind to the facts.

That's fine you can all agree on those points. Others won't but then they're likely not to join the thread.

No problem with long running threads where posters agree. I hope to get more differing POVs on the main boards though

Well, quite - long running threads are a fact of MN life. There's nothing stopping like minded people who are sad that the last governnment lost the election from starting their own series.

No thanks but yeh there’s not

I am glad others outside the one going post though on the main threads especially from an economic POV

And I hope more feel they can without attacks or insult

Plenty have said that. On both sides. There are plenty of threads where I've backed away, not because I have been convinced by a different view necessarily, but often because the same few people are like sledgehammers - and of course there are quite possibly less of them than the names suggest.
