It's 3pm and already we've had people trick n treating. I've now brought pumpkins inside until 5ish. Anyone else?

I wish my house came with a DO Not disturb option

Just don't have any lights on at the front, people will think you are out for the evening.

Heronwatcher · 31/10/2024 16:44

You do realise you can just take the stuff in? It’s not like tax? Just put a sign up saying “sweets run out” and take the pumpkins in.

They still hammer on the door

If you want to take you should be willing to find ways to give.

And I have explained to you that I give plenty…but no that’s not good enough. You’re too miserable to even accept that!

ARichtGoodDram · 31/10/2024 16:51

It's not though I have to buy at least 3 large multipacks of 80-100 sweets. I don't have that many kids on the road

You don't have to though. You could chose not to join in.

We're relatively rural, but our little bit has become known as a Halloween place to go. We gave out 175ish goody bags last year. Was over 200 pre pandemic.

Several people here don't join in. No pumpkin. No signs. No knockers.

One neighbour is very open that she buys one bag of sweets and then when it's gone it's gone.

You only have to join in to the level you're happy with.

What was your point?

I think it was if you like the countryside and farmers then you have to put up with their kids hammering on your door demanding sweets

VegTrug · 31/10/2024 16:52

@VeterinaryCareAssistant It's always half term on Halloween.
Grinches refers to Christmas

Also, some of us work from home! Why should I have to get up countless times just because kids can’t be bothered to consider other people! Not everyone is sat at home day in day out, doing nothing

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 31/10/2024 16:52

wiesowarum · 31/10/2024 16:14

She's driving to take knowing she's not doing any giving.

Fuck me, it's a few sweets. Lighten up.

Frith2013 · 31/10/2024 16:53

I just leave a bowl of sweets outside (it's not raining).

Lights are up and lanterns have the candles in and I'll light them when I've had my cup of tea.

thisfilmisboring123 · 31/10/2024 16:44

But that’s not the point is it.

Most of the fun is knocking on the door, not just some random handing you sweets

For my DD most of the fun was in planning the tricks. But that doesn't seem to be a thing in the UK. When kids says "Trick or treat?" and I answer "Trick" they look astonished and not one has ever had a pre-prepared trick. So it's really just walking around collecting sweets, which is a shame, as they are missing out on half of the trick or treat experience. (I hasten to add that even when I chose "trick" kids were given sweets after the trick had taken place!)

Superorangemoon · 31/10/2024 16:54

At least the kids are out instead of indoors like most of the time

I lived very rurally (Welsh Marches) for nearly 25 years. We had one group of trick and treaters in all those years! We still lit pumpkins for anyone who drove by.

I'll tell you what's tiring, working from home and having to day up from your desk countless times at 3 in the afternoon because kids can’t be bothered to wait until 5!

Tbf, it isn't the kids that are at fault - it's the thoughtless parents that take them at that time.

I'd say it should start at around 5pm - that way it will be dark (as is traditional, it being Halloween and all) and you're also less likely to be disturbing people working from home.

TarantinoIsAMisogynist · 31/10/2024 16:57

I mean, you wouldn't go carolling from door to door at 3pm on a workday, would you? (Or maybe some people are so thoughtless that they would?)

Halloween is no different.

No, you’re right!

In the UK, think it basically just translates, ‘give me sweets’ lol

I do remember one year a relative said trick and they threw flour at her! Not sure she was expecting it!

lemonyellows · 31/10/2024 16:58

Getting foggy now. Adds to the spookiness 👻

evtheria · 31/10/2024 16:58

Around ours anything before 6 is a bit frowned upon - as I discovered to my embarrassment when taking DS, then 4, out on his first t&t.
Little ones seem to be out later just the same as older kids, which is quite nice as it keeps the vibe pleasant for all.

People don't appear to put out illuminated pumpkins until the evening, though, which seems to be the signal for Go.

user2848502016 · 31/10/2024 16:59

Nobody here yet, expecting them any minute as it's starting to get dark!
The youngest kids usually start around 5pm and it's all done by 8.30 ish here

We dress up, dress the house up and sit back for the onslaught. Our record is 110 visitors. One pack of sweets each - we hand them out, no one's allowed to just take what they want, they're all the same.

We started it when DS was 2 years old and a little too young to take out and we're now on our 15th year. DS is off to uni next year but we'll continue the tradition. A small bag of sweets for a kid's smile and the look on their face when a demon or witch answers the door - priceless!

I thought this was going to be a nice happy thread but no , same old , same old .🙄

Why on earth did you think that a thread titled, "It's only 3pm and the doors already knocking" would be happy?

It's obvious from the title that the OP thinks that 3pm is too early. And lots of people (including me) agree - it's daylight, and lots of people will still be working at 3pm.

Knocking on people's doors in the middle of the working day is a pretty thoughtless thing to do. That person might be perfectly happy to give out sweets at 5.30pm, but isn't going to be happy that you've just interrupted their client call.
