Agree.
I don't understand the thought process behind this at all.

I assume the thought process would be ‘my child wants to go trick or treating but since our neighbours are sheep we’d better go to the nearest village.’ That’s what we did when we lived in the middle of nowhere. Don’t really understand the outrage/confusion

why have we americanised Halloween? please tell them to go away.I celebrate all souls day and I dont want children badgering me or teens either. stay at home and do apple bobbing if you want but this is not a part of our culture.it was not done obsessively in England, Ireland or Scotland not to the extent of harrassment that happens now.

I didn't realise that Hallowe'en is actually IRISH.
It was an American who was very into Halloween who told me.

As a kid, pumpkins weren't available back in 1970's , so Turnips were carved- The American said this is exactly what the Irish did, back in the days of yore.

Good for you.

I, on the other hand won’t be telling anyone to go away nor will I be staying home and doing apple bobbing.

How about you stay home, pretend you’re not in or tell them to go away if you wish and leave others to do as they see fit.

VioletCrawleyForever · 31/10/2024 16:31

I'm expecting the door to start going about 5pm

Please don't do this. I live in a road that people travel to and it REALLY spoils the vibe

Genuinely how?

I used to live in an area of London where people used to travel to and it was FAB! So many kids running round and really well behaved as a whole. My kids loved bring part of it, both trick and treating but also answering the door to loads of people in costumes when smaller. We didn’t care whether they were from our street or 10 miles away.

Plus I think the poster means the next village along, if you live rurally you normally go to the next village for the shop/ school/ church etc what an earth is wrong with going trick and treating there.

It’s all a bit Halloween Reform isn’t it, “those people from the next village, coming here, taking our haribo/ celebrations….”

Positivenancy · 31/10/2024 16:27

I made goody bags and dropped them to my cousins dc who live rurally too! I had another cousin drop over today and I did the same for her dc…is that ok with you @wiesowarum. you sound really mean to be honest, like what is ACTUALLY wrong with you?

Read your replies back, you started smug and now you're name calling, all because the grabiness was pointed out.

So you essentially go just to take?

Wellingtonspie · 31/10/2024 16:33

Also when we have taken part I’d never begrudge the little kids say from the rough estate coming here either.

Better than seeing drug dealing and messed up off their heads cracks heads crawling the street. It’s cheapo candy. Apart from the love hearts they are mine 🤣

I don't see the issue with living in a run down area going to the wealthy area next door? 🤷

Sounded smug to you…I didn’t mean it in a smug way.

But it does sound smug though.

BunnyLake · 31/10/2024 16:36

I’m glad I live tucked away as no one has ever knocked on my door for Halloween since being here fourteen odd years. I did used to take the kids when they were younger though. Hope the kids have fun.

Nope. Only the snobs have an issue.

Oh no Henry the unwashed are here for a mini sized Mars lock away the pumpkins and hide

@wiesowarum dear god…it’s Halloween for gods sake! It’s not like we do it every night. It’s one night a year! I’d be delighted if people called to mine in reality…but they don’t, I don’t control that. Nothing I can do about it really.

I wish I could send some your way. We are basically a destination street. People go all out and everyone in the area swarms in instead of just sticking with their immediate neighbours. The community spirit used to be nice, you could actually catch up with your neighbours but now it's like a gannet feeding frenzy

Yes, and then some!

They can’t trick or treat near where they live as they don’t have neighbours. Hence, they go a little further afield so their children can trick or treat.

I mean, I just cannot possibly fathom how miserable someone would have to be to have a problem with this.

We have the opposite.
Folk who look down on us most of the year and then turn up begging at Halloween.

Wellingtonspie · 31/10/2024 16:38

You could have two tier candy.

Mini Mars for the faces you know and the Poundland shit for the unwashed 😉

for those concerned about interlopers.

Positivenancy · 31/10/2024 15:57

You're one DC but EVERYONE else will have the same idea if they are also in the same position and the people on the street you're going to will only have prepared for their local kids.

That could get really annoying.

So when you visit the countryside your turning up to use their local areas of beauty without paying towards it right… just turning up to take what that community works hard to maintain looking nice and the little community feel that makes it so cutesy

They would be getting very short shrift if they knocked on our doors at that time, the bloody cheek!
