Vibrators on sale at Tesco, thought it was a bit much

Went to buy some toothpaste with my kids, 7 year old wants to see new toy in plastic boxes, it’s rows and rows of vibrators. Is it just me or is this a bit much for the weekly shop?

Except YOU keep mentioning me being reported, which leads to deleted posts.

Mentioning that you've been reported does not lead to admin deleting your posts. People reporting your posts does that. I haven't reported you, but other posters have. Raise that with them.

Other than that, we have no common ground and I suggest we leave our communication there.

But you are happy for them to sell other adult (and non-adult) products, all of which are far more harmful than a few sex toys.

Aisles and aisles of sugar-filled products, booze and tobacco - all of which destroy thousands of lives each year, and you think that a couple of tiny vibrators hidden away with the boring medical stuff is the problem?

Careful
You're now a creep too
😒

I’d cringe buying a sex toy in Tesco. It’s somewhere with families, so not really necessary either. It doesn’t fit so on that note, yanbu

how do you control all external triggers for conversation without keeping your children in the house at all times and removing access to tv, radio and the internet? Kids see and overhear inappropriate things every single day, when they’re young it goes over their heads and as they get older you can have a ready supply of stock phrases like “that’s for grown ups” or “ask me about it when we get home”. (To give you time to come up with an age appropriate explanation).

I recently bought a bullet vibe in Asda, it was on the shelf with condoms. Scan and shop on my phone with some cat food. Of course the checkout selected me for a “random” scan check, but the assistant and I got through it without spontaneously combusting. I actually forgot that until this thread reminded me.

Sorry but catfood condoms and a vibrator is a really funny shopping basket 😂

The point of parental controls on devices with access to the internet is to prevent exposure to sexual content before a certain age and sex toys aren't advertised on TV or radio in kid hours as far as I have seen for the same reason. There is clearly, and correctly I my opinion a converted effort to keep this stuff away from kids.

A discreetly packed vibrator is not the same as a full blown gimp suit. Even I draw the line there

That's why I don't think it's fair that people who would draw the line before vibrators are being cast (by some) as Victorian-era prudes.

This is the sort of area where everyone has their line. I'd imagine that some who are okay with vibrators being sold, in fairly discrete packaging, would be more troubled by the butt plugs (on sale in Sainsburys) posted a few pages back - particularly as the packaging (with the "deep and deeper" and "play" packaging).

For me, the logical place to draw the line would be before sex toys of any sort, even if some are more clearly "over the line" than others.

I'm actually based in Canada (though from the UK and visit regularly) and your point re. alcohol and tobacco wouldn't work where I am. Supermarkets don't sell alcohol. Many don't sell tobacco products but even those that do have them in opaque cabinets where they cannot be seen (I think this is now the case in the UK, too?). Vibrators, on the other hand, are openly displayed and often in close proximity to all-age or children-targetted products. I do find it a bit weird.

I don't know, I've asked but no-one had explained how making the point about hypocrisy around sex and alcohol is creepy

neilyoungismyhero · 27/10/2024 23:28

Never seen them in my Tesco's.....I may complain.

What a refreshingly sensible opinion. Some of the posts here are wild.

Rest assured vibrators aren’t in close proximity to child targeted products. Unless children are particularly drawn to cold medication, bandages or sanitary towels.

Pureasthedrivensnowww · 27/10/2024 23:30

I just think fingers and imagination are enough. I don't need much to achieve orgasm.

fuck me, you don’t feel you want one so all women must be denied?

Sex toys are a choice, not essential for sex or for pleasure. And if there are vibrators on the shelf, why stop at that? Why not a whole array of accessories? Why not nipple clamps etc? Would they not also then be fine? Why not a bondage section next to the imported sausages?

who are you to decide they’re not essential for pleasure.

and even if so, lots of things - in fact most things - are non essential. Including imported sausages

you’re embarrassing yourself

NPET · 27/10/2024 23:32

Assuming they're not going to sell them to kids, I can't see the problem. Always good to know where I can find one if I'm desperate.

They are, here, which is why I mentioned it.

The important question - do they have a special Club Card price?

Best comment on this thread.

Thanks for posting op - have been meaning to get a new vibrator for ages

Perhaps petition your local store to have them moved to a more appropriate place?

I mean really what’s the difference between that and condoms?
One is for males and one is for females making it therefore so much more lewd?

As a matter of fact there are both names and female condoms, it's just that the female ones never really caught on that much commercially.

I do feel a bit weird, though, that shoving manufactured items inside every orifice seems to be expected of us all nowadays

OMG I'm crying 😂😂😂😂😂

Pureasthedrivensnowww · 27/10/2024 23:39

I'd feel happier about the situation if I really believed that it had naturally evolved through gradually liberating ourselves from the hangups of the past and choosing pleasure in a healthy way. It just doesn't feel that way. It feels more like the insidious influence of marketing bullshit, which has infiltrated and corrupted our lives. I find it sad, not joyful, that intimacy is now just another product to sell us

what a hilarious hot take masquerading as intellectual. ‘Intimacy is now a product to sell us.’ Nah mate, just a fucking good orgasm.

No, thanks, we're talking major chains and I don't feel strongly enough about it to pick that fight, I just do find it a bit weird.

I guess if I could pick I’d probably put condoms behind the pharmacy counter too, I get that people may want to buy these items it’s just that as a parent I want to choose when my kids hear about these things rather than just get exposed to them.

I hope you don't think they should put tampons behind the pharmacy counter so you don't have to explain periods to your kids.
