Vibrators on sale at Tesco, thought it was a bit much

Went to buy some toothpaste with my kids, 7 year old wants to see new toy in plastic boxes, it’s rows and rows of vibrators. Is it just me or is this a bit much for the weekly shop?

Their only purpose is non baby making, pleasure only sex free of the risks of STI’s and babies.
If you aren’t seeking pleasurable risk free sex you don’t need condoms.

Edited

To be fair, you need condoms even for non- pleasurable risk free sex...

Condoms are for birth control, dildos are a sex toy and I don't want to pick one up with my weekly shop 🤷‍♀️

Don't then.

I don't like oranges. So I don't buy them. It's really easy.

HighlandCowbag · 27/10/2024 18:56

Every little helps.

I don’t see any difference really between them and condoms, lube etc which have always just been out on display.

I think that contraception is a separate thing entirely to sex toys. Talking to kids about contraception is vital, and making it easy to lob condoms into a basket is vital. It's not the same for sex toys, and I agree with pps that normalising everything to do with adult sexuality for young kids is a different thing altogether.

Secondly, I don't have any issue with vibrators being sold in Tesco, but I do find the race to be completely oblivious to why other people have a different POV a bit irritating.

Care to explain why? I'll wait.

I'll explain. People who want to have sex, tend to have sex. If they don't want to get STDs or get pregnant then they use condoms.

You might as well say that vitamins are for pleasure because the alternative to taking vitamins isn't a lowered immune system, it's eating carrots. Tampons are for pleasure because the alternative isn't bleeding everywhere, it's using rabbit skin.

Yes, that sort of thing should be strictly restricted to shops in back streets with brown paper over the windows so as not to offend our delicate middle class sensibilities.

clutches pearls

Edited

Those aren't pearls, they're Tesco-value anal beads.

It’s not really Tesco’s fault if you end up with a shit shag though is it?
The point of condoms is to remove the functional aspect of it, making a baby, and leave only the recreational activity.

Efrogwraig · 27/10/2024 18:59

We don't have them in our Tesco. I shall have to complain!

Maybe next we can have male sex toys, so that men and boys can also have sexual pleasure.

Didn’t we just have this thread a week ago…

Yes we did. The OP was complaining about it in Boots.

Won’t someone please think of the children!?

I guess if I could pick I’d probably put condoms behind the pharmacy counter too, I get that people may want to buy these items it’s just that as a parent I want to choose when my kids hear about these things rather than just get exposed to them.

How about banning condoms or even having sex altogether, like this you will never have to have the difficult convo with your kiddies.

Maybe talk to your kids about sex rather than cover their eyes in Tesco and wait until they are 18 and know it all from elsewhere.

Many people would not want to go and ask for condoms etc over the counter, they are not prescription drugs and should be widely available without assistance, as they are now.

I'm sure you think you have a point, but fuck me if I can work out what it is.

Condoms enable sexy pleasure. Vibrators enable sexy pleasure. Ultimately they are for the same thing. Sometimes - gasp - people might even use both of them at the same time.

30 years ago or whatever I'm quite sure people were getting all up in their bums about condoms being sold in supermarkets too.

That's not entirely accurate. Many people use them specifically to avoid STIs. They're like vitamins or COVID masks in that respect, preemptively stopping you from getting sick.

justasking111 · 27/10/2024 19:02

The rise in STI's in post menopausal women is a grim statistic. With all the online dating, casual sex I would certainly want a partner to wear one.

AcceptAllChanges · 27/10/2024 19:03

I do feel nostalgic for the days when we weren't expected to be getting our rocks off every 5 minutes. Especially as neurosis about sexual attractiveness/performance is used to sell us shit we don't want or need.

Well yeah, obviously I think I have a point, or I wouldn't bother posting! To be clear, I don't disagree with vibrators being sold in tesco's, seems like a perfectly sensible place to sell them to me.

My point is that since "sexy pleasure" falls broadly under health (specifically sexual health), it's fair enough to have them in the isle by the vitamins.

If you’re having such casual sex that you don’t know whether they have an STI or not how is that not just for the purpose of pleasure??

Oh no

Girls and women might discover and own their own sexual pleasure

The horror

I don't need a battery-powered fake penis to discover and own my sexual pleasure.

And I wouldn't want my daughter or other girls/women to feel that somehow they should like this. It's a form of subliminal pressurising, imo.

A vibrator is infinitely better than any penis - real or fake! Honestly don’t knock it til you’ve tried it.

DyslexicPoster · 27/10/2024 19:08

I wonder who buys them in store? They need removal from a security box ( me and dh was sniggering looking for covid tests). What the ideal shopping basket combination? They are on top shelf with sex stuff. I think it's grim tbh but neither do I take my kids to pick out lube and condoms so they don't go near that stuff.

Ok, but who cares about you in this context.
Some women dont need them and some do and enjoy it a lot. Hopefully your daughter does not have to ask you for your permission if the wants to use a vibrator and you dont use sublimial pressuring on her to condition her to think some forms of pleasure are dirty just because you dont approve.

And what would be wrong if they did like it?

It’s all sounding very Victorian.

Also do you even know what a vibrator is? Because it’s not a fake penis.

Completelyjo · 27/10/2024 19:05

If you’re having such casual sex that you don’t know whether they have an STI or not how is that not just for the purpose of pleasure??

The sex is (presumably) aimed at pleasure. The condoms are aimed at preventing illness.

Compare: the staying up all night at the party is aimed at fun. The vitamins you take in the morning are aimed at trying to stop the all nighter catching up with you and making you ill.

On other words, Tesco doesn't care how or why you have gotten ill or might get ill. It's just there to sell you a health solution.

Lwrenn · 27/10/2024 19:09

It's brilliant progress, women having enjoyable sexual experiences shouldn't be a dirty secret.
I'm not sure if you can still buy top shelf magazines full of naked women with how readily available it is for free now but I managed to cope seeing women being treated like objects (and I believe Samantha fox was 16 posing topless in the s*n newspaper) without being scarred, I'm sure a few innocuous bits of plastic won't scar the children until they're old enough to understand and can be taught women enjoying sex isn't shameful.
