Don't argue with the traffic warden on your school run

It made me laugh yesterday as 3 of the Mums driving stupidly big cars received parking tickets outside the school dates. They work on the safety lines that are outside schools and they only live a 7 minute walk from school and also don't work (I know of them). They came out and tried to argue their way out of the tickets saying "what? A parking ticket for dropping my kid off at school?"

I think it serves them right. I've parked on a single yellow near the school in a mega rush so I'm no angel but if you do that you accept that there is a chance you will get a ticket and can't complain if you get one can you!!?

Just made me laugh it was the 4x4 cars from the professional yummy mummies who all got them and then wanted to argue, talk about entitlement! Plus if you have a big car then surely a parking ticket is affordable?! That's part of the illusion of wealth is that you don't care!

Needless to say the areas are clear today so they've learned their lesson, for now at least! X

Would be better if an area at least half a mile around the school was a no parking zone and people would actually walk to keep it safer coming out of school.

Please no. I live near a couple of schools and get enough people parking badly on our street at end of school time as it is

Good grief a half mile exclusion zone! In my kids primary that would encompass about 200 houses. Where should the residents in those houses park?? What about people with mobility issues? Or pregnant women or people with young toddlers and babies? Not everyone can do a 2 mile round trip every day.

SophiaJ8 · 25/10/2024 12:51

The ‘yummy mummies’ 🤮 really don’t care what you’re up to. They’re not judging you, they’re just getting on with their lives. And yes, it is coming across as jealousy.

ButterMints · 25/10/2024 12:54

DC school is right next to a council car park and has an agreement to use the car park during school run times with permits issued for free.

We walk to school but have to walk through the car park and it's utter bedlam. The yummy mummy types in SUVs are absolutely the worst. They drive too fast to try and get the spots closest to the entrance (saving themselves a whole 30 second walk), reverse without looking out of spaces (because they're incapable of reversing in) and one parent actually got hit by one the other week.

So even if a solution is offered, such as the use of a massive car park adjacent to the school, you still get the same problems. And it's absolutely the type OP describes!

Most SUV drivers do not have disabilities and don't have to fit their wheelchairs in. Anyway there are plenty of cars that fit wheelchairs in or have good seating, and aren't massive tanks.

They are driving them because they like to be seen in expensive cars and also think they give them more protection, so they can bully others on the roads.

Getting a Motability car isn’t just about getting the wheelchair in, there are quite a number of other factors that need to be taken into consideration, before the car I have now I had a Fiesta, unfortunately it got to the point where I could no longer get in and out.
I also live in a rural area that sees frequent and heavy snowfall in winter. The point is, you’re making judgements about people who have these cars without knowing the circumstances.

Having said that, I have had a row with a footballer’s wife when she parked her Range Rover (Victoria Beckham styling) in a blue badge space because she had a baby!
I judged, loudly!

JennySayQuoi · 25/10/2024 13:23

Our head used to have an arrangement with the local parking wardens for them to regularly be around at pick up time, as letters home about parking on the school markings were not seemingly getting through.

Most, maybe, but not all. Until you know someone’s individual circumstances you can’t really judge.

I drive a big SUV, I do use it for shopping and going to the gym etc. However, my husband has been using it in the middle of a field for the last couple of days.

Not everybody can afford to buy several separate vehicles to suit specific purposes, so one car that can do everything has to suffice.

But claiming all sahm’s are vacuous, boring, have no life and no interests just because don’t full time isn’t boring and unimaginative.

Even the notion that someone who doesn’t work and therefore has significantly more time to spend on things they enjoy is boring and dull is pretty pathetic.

I didn't say all SAHMs are like that, I said yummy mummy's. Not all SAHMs are yummy mummy's. YMs are a certainty type of woman who display the behaviour the OP is complaining about.

I used to think that until after so long off work I realised that actually careers benefit people. They open doors, give personal achievement and more importantly, provide money for all the things you want to do! All the time in the world to do what you like isn't worth anything if you haven't got the money to fund your activities.

If you really can't think of any reason that women might look down on these types other than jealousy you really aren't very imaginative.

But they do have money to fund their activities? Isn’t that the whole point? You moaning about their big cars, lunches out, freshly done hair, freshly done nails? Sounds like they have plenty of money to do what they like and that’s exactly what bothers you.

I don't have a problem with their money I think you're projecting.

You’re the one bringing up that having free time is useless when you can’t afford your activities. Odd thing to bring up from nowhere and then claim you don’t have a problem with their money and other people are projecting.

I simply think money is worth more when you earn it yourself.

That wouldn't work in many village schools.Confused
Or urban ones ... Draw a half mile circle round each school and see what's left.

And some spouses consider themselves a team.
You are incredibly judgmental about the choices other people make for their lives and what suits their families.

NewNameNoelle · 25/10/2024 13:54

I’m all for ticketing dangerous parking.

The nastiness, judgement and reverse snobbery on this thread is appalling. Why is it ok to judge anyone for their choice to work or not, how much money they might or might not have, or their type of car? Judge the illegal and dangerous parking, but the rest is just nasty.

Can you define “yummy mummy” in a way that isn’t misogynistic??

It REALLT bothers you when women don’t work doesn’t it. What about when men don’t work?

I look down on the likes of criminals, child abusers etc - it baffles me that people look down on some women for <checks notes> going for lunch?

The answer is always a woman who is prettier than me, richer than me, seems to have an easier life and always be enjoying herself.
Its rooter in misogyny.
Mother’s should not be that happy.
Mother’s should not have it that easy.
Mother’s shouldn’t have that much help.
Mother’s shouldn’t have time to go to the gym.
