Don't argue with the traffic warden on your school run

It made me laugh yesterday as 3 of the Mums driving stupidly big cars received parking tickets outside the school dates. They work on the safety lines that are outside schools and they only live a 7 minute walk from school and also don't work (I know of them). They came out and tried to argue their way out of the tickets saying "what? A parking ticket for dropping my kid off at school?"

I think it serves them right. I've parked on a single yellow near the school in a mega rush so I'm no angel but if you do that you accept that there is a chance you will get a ticket and can't complain if you get one can you!!?

Just made me laugh it was the 4x4 cars from the professional yummy mummies who all got them and then wanted to argue, talk about entitlement! Plus if you have a big car then surely a parking ticket is affordable?! That's part of the illusion of wealth is that you don't care!

Needless to say the areas are clear today so they've learned their lesson, for now at least! X

It’s not trotted out to everyone who complains about 4x4s but it points to jealousy when you choose to bring up “spending their husbands money” now it’s worth less because they didn’t earn it etc. it’s very odd to raise all those things if the money isn’t relevant and you don’t have an issue with it.

It’s also off to now claim it’s not the women you have an issue with but the behaviour but why have several posts ranting about how often they get manicures, or lunch, or what they wear, or what their hobbies are or how vacuous and boring all these women are?

Your posts are just judgmental and nasty.

If it was just about parking then you wouldn’t have raise all those things.

I said all those things when people were demanding a definition of yummy mummy. It is those types of women who are consistently displaying the behaviour complained about in the op. Talking about where their money comes from is an explanation of why I'm not jealous of these women and neither are all other posters on this thread bemoaning them and their behaviour. I will never be jealous of someone who didn't earn what they have. Especially not when I have the same as them but I earned it for myself.

It baffles me that people really can't get over the idea that we can't dislike certain types of women without being jealous of them, I find it a childish assumption.

Why does it matter what car they drive? You can get a 4x4 for like £400 a month on PCP, not exactly crazy expensive is it? If you want a 4x4, get your money up?

Hello,

Just popping our head round to say that we've had to remove a number of posts on this thread for breaking our talk guidelines. While we are always happy for civil debate, it does need to remain civil. If posters are unable to post within our talk guidelines, we will have to take this down. Please report anything you'd like us to take a look at.

Can't really see how justified criticism of selfish parking and people who drive cars that are far too big for UK roads and driving conditions is a breach of Talk guidelines.

Just because certain posters don't agree with an opinion (I can't think why they might not!) doesn't mean it should be pulled.

It is high time that the UK government got to grips with this and limited the size of vehicle that can be sold and used here.

Edited: and councils should grow a pair and ban pavement parking in their areas as well. But they won't, because some of their own workers will be driving SUVs and parking them on pavements as well (and leaving engines running).

It's not about the cost, it's the fact they are unsuitable for UK road conditions. Some of us realise this and drive cars that are smaller and more suitable (and manage just fine to get everything in). Disabled people don't necessarily need a massive SUV either, there are smaller cars with plenty of storage, headroom and comfortable seats.

I don't think you've been paying attention.

People who object to the needless use of 4x4s in urban areas are normally not doing so because they want one but can't afford it. And they're not objecting because they don't like people buying expensive things.

sharpclawedkitten · 26/10/2024 14:18

Also, when you live in a "naice" area where people are very aspirational, you see that the "yummy mummy" stereotype has a lot of truth in it.

Yes - you can have an expensive car, but buy one that's suitable for UK roads!

Noodledoodlepumpkin · 26/10/2024 14:23

It doesn’t matter what they were driving. Even a small car can injure or kill someone.
They got what they deserved.

Bear in mind also that just because they had the 4x4’s doesn’t mean they are “ professional yummie mummies”
There is increasingly a breed who will get into huge debt to give others the illusion they are well off when they are not.

A certain set of annoying behaviours is perpetrated by a certain type of person in many areas for the UK, that is why the stereotype exists in the first place. It's really not that deep.

You won't convince me that marrying well and then looking after a home is the same level of achievement as obtaining a degree, a masters, professional registered status and then building a career on those things and buying your own land rover. If you feel that way that's fine, but you won't convince me and I don't really understand why it matters to you if I agree with you or not.

I would be willing to bet my life on the statistics proving that the parking behaviour that annoys you is not mostly perpetrated by the "certain type of person" you think it is. But perhaps you notice it more because of your clear disdain for them leading to confirmation bias.

And you are making huge assumptions about stay at home parents. The majority of stay at home parents I have known over the years have been educated, qualified and professionally successful people before and after taking time away from their career to care for their children. I live in an affluent area and know of exactly zero women who have "married well". I don't deny that there are a tiny proportion of people who marry because of wealth, but the tiny number of these women can not possibly be guilty of all parking offences near every primary school in the entirety of the country.

I'm not trying to convince you that "work at home" mother's are in any way morally superior to "work out of the home" mothers because I don't believe that is true. What am I pointing out is that when you complain about people "looking down their nose" at others it is probably best not to then loudly and publicly look down YOUR nose at a whole group of women who are affecting your life not a jot.

Except they are affecting my life, because they clog up the road outside my child's school every morning and make it 10 times more difficult than it needs to be for everyone else including me. As stated in the Op.

I don't care if they look down their nose at me, their opinions mean nothing to me, what I'm annoyed about is the assumption that women can't find their behaviour annoying without being jealous. That was my initial objection in this thread, it is still my only objection and I really don't care what SAHMs do because you're right it doesn't affect me. It's the yummy mummy's that people who have been talking about that annoy me. A SAHM in a normal car who drives and parks considerately is fine with me!

It's you who seems to have got hung up on defending SAHMs.

I agree it does not, if they cannot park in a safe place in any car, still should be a criminal offence. Not a parking ticket, but one where you appear in court and where anyone with evidence can report the matter to the police.

Points on licence, driving bans are the solution. Fines should just be the cost of prosecution.

But you were telling us all to "get our money up" and buy our own 4x4s, which none of us want because we're actually complaining about people who drive 4x4s.

They weren't talking nonsense, they were telling you you missed the point.

And you aren't talking nonsense, you're dishing out hostility

Hello are you the OP? Am I speaking to every single poster who commented on the thread prior to my comment? Or was I speaking DIRECTLY to the OP who clearly has an issue with SAHMs and the vehicles that they drive?

Why have you randomly involved yourself and taken offence at the ‘get your money up’ comment when I clearly wasn’t speaking to you or anyone else other than the OP? Very strange indeed but I won’t spend my evening going back and forth with you

Ok you really have missed the point most have us have been talking about and you're clearly very angry.

If you wanted it to be clear you were talking DIRECTLY to the Op and not just joining the general discussion you should have made it clearer with an @ or something as it wasn't clear that you were speaking to them only. I'm not offended at your money comment, I have plenty of money, we're all having a civil discussion then you just turned up throwing insults and offering sarcastic claps for people. I quoted you because I'm sick of people throwing hostility at people who dare to disagree with them on this thread.

That's a fair point, ita more to illustrate the fact that they aren't rushing off to a job so no reason not to walk (they're all visibly mobile and don't use the disabled spots available)

I taught at a very small village school. 10 mins walking and you would be right through the village. Some parents drove from other villages, fair enough, and some would drive on into work( but not many, high unemployment area) . Every term schools do a travel survey and 85+ %of our families drove. It must have taken longer to get the kids in the car, driv and park and walk them in. I never understood it.

It got so bad at one school they'd built a housing estate round, people couldn't get out of their driveway that the school set up a new system. Drop and go. The pupils were escorted into school by year 6 pupils watched by members of staff. Parents weren't allowed to park and walk in at the morning slot. Was still chaos in the afternoon mind.
