King charles Heckled in Australia

Albaamy121 · 22/10/2024 23:16

Did anyone see that King Charles was heckled in Australia this week by an Australian senator, Lidia Thorpe.

She shouted at him "you are not my King, this is not your land, you have stolen our land".

Any thoughts?

I didn't see any thread on it, so I started this one.

Not bothered. She's entitled to her opinion. Maybe a bit tasteless in light of his cancer diagnosis, but if he's still performing the role of King then I think people are entitled to object also.

BESTAUNTB · 22/10/2024 23:24

She’s entitled to object. There was no violence and no law broken.

These tours of the former Empire nations look more and more anachronistic to me tbh.

Hateam · 22/10/2024 23:24

She can make her point; it's valid.

But yelling at people like this is just rude and obnoxious. Bit of an own goal.really

What about yelling 'murder' at women going into abortion clinics?

No violence, no law broken - fine by you?

Nogaxeh · 22/10/2024 23:27

My main thought on this is that I'm embarrassed that people in Britain were dragged away by police when they tried to shout similar things at the King in his own country.

Is the Monarchy so insecure that British people are forbidden from shouting "Not My King" on British streets?

Ozgirl75 · 22/10/2024 23:28

She’s not a serious person - she’s widely mocked over here for being, frankly, dumb as a brick.

That's not even nearly the same thing.

Cookiecrumblepie · 22/10/2024 23:29

Good on her. His cancer and her yelling is irrelevant in my view. If she didn’t yell he wouldn’t hear her.

The crown has done horrible things to indigenous people. She is right to have her say.

Ozgirl75 · 22/10/2024 23:30

She’s actually doing wonders for the anti republic campaign over here. It was rising in popularity, the idea of us becoming a republic, but then a few loony lefties got hold of it and now the monarchy is more popular than ever.
People see that they’re not doing anything wrong, and that if we got rid of them we might end up with yet another rubbish person that we have to vote for, and seeing the calibre of people who are against the monarchy has made most normal people realise that we can’t trust them and we may as well stick with what we’ve got.

vegandspice · 22/10/2024 23:30

Just rude,as it would be for any human being!

How are these things comparable? At any rate people are, sadly, permitted to harrass women seeking medical care in the US because of our free speech laws.

lol, no. Australia is extremely multi cultural and certainly no more racist than the U.K. Of course there are some racists, but nothing like the scale of people who voted Reform.

Hateam · 22/10/2024 23:29

Shouting at a woman entering an abortion clinic is not the same as shouting at the King of the country that colonised yours when he comes to visit and parade around.

She's not a native Australian, so I can't take her seriously

The green party got fed up with her, so she's now an independent.

Because they both involve shouting at people in public because you disagree with them.

How are they NOT comparable?

Warringahvoter · 22/10/2024 23:35

Women and other minorities and oppressed people are always told to be polite. Even though they don’t have a voice unless they shout. Sen Thorpe is certainly lambasted by many areas of the right wing press - but there is still deep hurt amongst the indigenous community that is not being dealt with. Sometimes you need the rebels to have a voice.

Ozgirl75 · 22/10/2024 23:36

She is indigenous- her mums side is indigenous while her dad is English.
She can have her opinion of course but she doesn’t speak for all indigenous people, loads of them have come out in support of the King and say how much they respect how he’s worked with them. She’s just one woman, she’s always mouthing off about something or other.

Albaamy121 · 22/10/2024 23:36

I thought three things about it really.

It's free speech. She's entitled to say what she wants. It would be worse if no one could say anything

But a small part of me felt bad for Charles. He's not that well and he travelled all that way.

And I also thought, was it not ill advised for him to go to Australia. Where he doesn't seem to be that popular. Especially when he's old and not well.

I’m not a massive fan of the Royal family and you’d never invent it but on balance I think that given it exists, there is a small nett benefit to the U.K. to retaining a slimmed down RF. However it does seem totally anachronistic and bizarre for Australia. If I were Australian I’d be a Republican.

What on earth does this mean? She is indigenous - she identifies as and is accepted by the indigenous community. You’ve been listening to too many shock jocks.

Ozgirl75 · 22/10/2024 23:38

I’m sure he’s well used to hecklers - he has them in the U.K. after all.
He isn’t unpopular over here at all. Most people are broadly supportive/ambivalent, a few like the idea of being a republic but can’t figure out who would lead it and a few are vociferously for it and shout about it.

Hateam · 22/10/2024 23:39

She's shouting at the wrong person.
It's the person who invited him she should be shouting at.

Isn't she only part indigenous.
