King charles Heckled in Australia

Albaamy121 · 22/10/2024 23:16

Did anyone see that King Charles was heckled in Australia this week by an Australian senator, Lidia Thorpe.

She shouted at him "you are not my King, this is not your land, you have stolen our land".

Any thoughts?

I didn't see any thread on it, so I started this one.

That doesn’t matter - she is indigenous. Loads of indigenous people are mixed backgrounds.

Albaamy121 · 22/10/2024 23:39

Isn't she only part indigenous.

Isnt descended from English people aswell?

There is no such thing as part indigenous. Same as there is no such thing as being part WOC.

Ozgirl75 · 22/10/2024 23:42

I personally think she’s cringe worthy and kind of dumb, but she is obviously indigenous and comes from a long family history of women working towards indigenous rights.

I'm just going from what I saw online.

It says that some of her recent ancestors are English.

Is that not accurate?

It really doesn’t matter and is irrelevant to the conversation in any event. Lots of fully white people are in favour of indigenous rights too.

coffy11 · 22/10/2024 23:45

Good on her.

Well it's relevant, because I was looking at her instagram after she shouted at the king.

And people were saying to her "you're descended from British people, so are you going to hold your own ancestors responisble".

So it is relevant to the topic

She put up a photo on her instagram showing a picture of King Charles beheaded.

Then she took it down, and said that it was one of her staff that posted it.

The point I think you’re trying to make it that if she isn’t “fully” Indigenous then she somehow shouldn’t be fighting for indigenous rights. I’m saying that this is clearly wrong because 1. She is indigenous and 2. She doesn’t need to be indigenous to argue for these rights in any event.

TryingAgainAgainAgain · 22/10/2024 23:48

You're just illustrating my point, @justasking111.

OssieShowman · 22/10/2024 23:49

She is a disgrace. Aussie here.

No that wasn't the point I was trying to make. Anyone can fight for indigenous rights.

My point is just that it's slightly hypocritical for her to call England colonisers and say they stole the land, when she is descended from English people herself, through one of her parents.

But he is her King. She can not like that as much as she wants. Charles is her King.

Ozgirl75 · 22/10/2024 23:53

The whole “you stole our land” thing is a bit daft really. If it wasn’t the British it would have been the French, who were literally days behind Cook. It’s not like Australia would ever have been left as some indigenous paradise, untouched by colonisation. I can see why they’re salty about it, but it was 200 years ago, it’s happened, it’s not changing and it would be better if they concentrated on what could be done NOW to improve the lot of IAs in remote communities rather than fighting totally unwinnable battles.

It would be like a load of British people complaining to Italy about the Roman invasion.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 22/10/2024 23:53

Ah, yes. Lydia Thorpe.

She won a state by-election for the Green Party in 2017 in a constituency in Victoria. Then she lost the seat in 2018.

She won a federal election in 2020, again for the Greens. Please note that Aussie elections are little different to those in the UK - she was not elected because people voted for her personally but because people voted for her party. The party had an ordered list of candidates to go to Federal Parliament and she was just next on the list when they got enough votes.

There were issues with her being sworn in. She had to make an affirmation of her allegiance to the Queen. She fucked about and called the Queen a colonizer (please note that the Queen did not colonize anything but under her reign many former colonies became independent states). Eventually, she got the words close enough and was sworn in.

Then it came out that she had been shagging a leader of a biker gang. Biker gangs are often heavily involved in organised crime in Australia. This lapse in judgement occurred when she was on a parliamentary committee that received confidential briefings on bikey crime.

She was investigated for contempt of parliament.

She resigned from the Greens to become an independent. She said it was because she wanted to support Blak sovereignty. Some argued that because she got her seat on a Greens party vote instead of personal votes, she should have stood down properly and allowed the Greens to have the seat back. She clung on to the seat instead.

She was detained by police at the Sydney Gay Pride Mardi Gras because she was lying on the road in front of the parade floats to protest at the police being present (I think).

There is a great video of her being tackled to the ground outside parliament by security when she tried to disrupt the women’s rights speeches organized by Kellie Jay Keen. It is worth a google.

She’s also been filmed drunk and shouting at people outside a strip club.

She protested loudly about a white male introducing new bail laws in the Northern Territory (currently suffering major crimes issues - google Alice Springs) which disproportionately affect aboriginals. But it turns out that the person introducing those laws was actually…an aboriginal woman!

She is known for shooting her mouth off and being vulgar both in general and while in the Senate Chamber at Parliament House.

She is a national joke.

Her behavior has probably boosted support for the monarchy. I don’t think King Charles has anything to worry about from her.

TryingAgainAgainAgain · 22/10/2024 23:29

In a deeply racist country...

Lidia Thorpe who are once screamed across the senate chamber at a female senator who has a child with autism “At least I keep my legs shut”? Who was filmed drunkenly fighting with security guards and calling a woman a “white cunt”? Who campaigned against the indigenous voice to parliament and who left the Greens party after she was disciplined for not disclosing her links to criminal bikie gangs? Who disrupted the gay and lesbian mardi gras rolling around on the ground screaming at police? Who bullied an indigenous elder - Aunty Geraldine Atkinson - so badly at parliament house that Atkinson was left shaking and in need of medical attention? That's who you're defending here?

Almost no one likes or respects Lidia Thorpe and her stupid behaviour is just a long line of crazy, attention-seeking antics. Indigenous Australians have criticised her because they see her narcissistic behaviour for what it is. She makes it harder for their voices to be heard.

It’s just a shame that people who don't know anything about her will think this is some kind of considered protest instead of yet another stunt.

Edited

Totally agree. She does nothing but harm the causes she fights for.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 22/10/2024 23:55

Oh, I forgot! She has also tweeted support for Hamas and been pictured wearing a Hamas headband.

Yes everyone was invading everyone back in those days.

Its interesting to talk to an Australian person. Thanks for your insight

Which part are you assigning as indigenous? Her legs? Half an arm? This is so outdated. She's accepted by the indigenous community as indigenous

This is very fraught topic in Australia as extremely racist actions have been carried out on the basis that people are ‘only part’ Aboriginal.

It’s not a characterisation that is accepted, as a result.

Well I'm half English, half Irish myself

And I say I'm half English, half Irish.

One of her parents is indigenous, the other parent is English.

Why would saying that she's from two different cultures be offensive?

It's fact

She may not consider him her King but others do. Neither of them were around when anything got stolen so all seems a bit pointless to me........other than for her to get herself in the news.
