Ah, yes. Lydia Thorpe.
She won a state by-election for the Green Party in 2017 in a constituency in Victoria. Then she lost the seat in 2018.
She won a federal election in 2020, again for the Greens. Please note that Aussie elections are little different to those in the UK - she was not elected because people voted for her personally but because people voted for her party. The party had an ordered list of candidates to go to Federal Parliament and she was just next on the list when they got enough votes.
There were issues with her being sworn in. She had to make an affirmation of her allegiance to the Queen. She fucked about and called the Queen a colonizer (please note that the Queen did not colonize anything but under her reign many former colonies became independent states). Eventually, she got the words close enough and was sworn in.
Then it came out that she had been shagging a leader of a biker gang. Biker gangs are often heavily involved in organised crime in Australia. This lapse in judgement occurred when she was on a parliamentary committee that received confidential briefings on bikey crime.
She was investigated for contempt of parliament.
She resigned from the Greens to become an independent. She said it was because she wanted to support Blak sovereignty. Some argued that because she got her seat on a Greens party vote instead of personal votes, she should have stood down properly and allowed the Greens to have the seat back. She clung on to the seat instead.
She was detained by police at the Sydney Gay Pride Mardi Gras because she was lying on the road in front of the parade floats to protest at the police being present (I think).
There is a great video of her being tackled to the ground outside parliament by security when she tried to disrupt the women’s rights speeches organized by Kellie Jay Keen. It is worth a google.
She’s also been filmed drunk and shouting at people outside a strip club.
She protested loudly about a white male introducing new bail laws in the Northern Territory (currently suffering major crimes issues - google Alice Springs) which disproportionately affect aboriginals. But it turns out that the person introducing those laws was actually…an aboriginal woman!
She is known for shooting her mouth off and being vulgar both in general and while in the Senate Chamber at Parliament House.
She is a national joke.
Her behavior has probably boosted support for the monarchy. I don’t think King Charles has anything to worry about from her.
