Mum not coming on Halloween - irked?

My mum has just let me know she’s having her hair done on Thursday evening next week so she won’t be coming over to ours to go trick or treating and watch a spooky movie with the kids (8, 10, 12). I’m slightly irritated by this as I thought it would have been nice to have a family night dressed up and go round taking the kids trick or treating.
I’ve allowed older DS to bring a friend over to come with us so it won’t be so empty but I just found it a bit selfish for a Nan to not want to spend Halloween with the grandkids! AIBU?

She has come every year before. I don’t understand why adults can’t enjoy festivals like Halloween, Easter and even Christmas to a certain extent?

But you're not asking her to enjoy it, you're asking her to enjoy it in the same way YOU do, and stick to YOUR plan of what's expected of her.

This is a non-issue. Grandparents don't have to spend every single holiday, festival or 'special' day with their grandkids, you know. Just because Halloween's a big deal to you, it doesn't mean it's a big deal to her. Most people don't see Halloween as an extended family celebration. If you love it, great! But it's unreasonable to expect your mother to be involved every year.

Oh, the "It's American and therefore shit" brigade are out in force today, aren't they?

I don't blame her for not wanting to go, really. Not sure I would.

But Halloween is a big thing round here - south of London. Lots of houses decorate. Loads of kids enjoy it. Many of them are older than twelve, but I'd say that mid-teens is the dropping out point for trick-or-treating.

Me, I can take it or leave it. My OH loves the whole thing, and so did our kids when they were young.

If you don't, then don't take part. But there's no need to be a curmudgeonly fuck about it.

Mummy hotdogs are always fun. You wrap a hot dog with puff pastry strips and blobs of cream cheese and black olive for the eyes.
