To hope that Donald Trump doesn’t win the election

1000 replies

RosaMoline · 21/10/2024 16:05

….it’s getting closer.
I was hoping that Kamala would be a shoo-in for the presidency, but looking at the betting odds, I’m feeling quite pessimistic.
It’s incomprehensible to me that a convicted felon, racist, rapist, liar and misogynist who spurred on an insurrection - after everything that’s happened - is running for office again and may very well win.
It’s comforting to read though that fellow Brits DON’T support him.
Apart from Reform. Obviously.

He is not "passionate" about the country. I don't even think he has the wherewithal to be passionate about anything but if he did it would be about the interests of Donald Trump.

Brinny · 27/10/2024 22:31

Isthisreasonable · 27/10/2024 21:49

He's not passionate about the US or Americans. His only passion is himself.

You are so right, passionate about making the Trumps a dynasty, he is not right in the mind, he is paying his supporters a lip service.they just can't see it but they will regret it should he win .It will be to late then as you can't retract a vote .

XChrome · 27/10/2024 22:33

BustingBaoBun · 27/10/2024 21:05

And that Hinchcliffe man said even worse about Latinos. It's so bad I honestly do not want to repeat it.

Another man speaking actually said 'this is the first time I've been asked to speak at a Nazi rally'

Those on the fence need to look and listen.

Holy hell! They are blatant.

GoodGollyMsMolly · 27/10/2024 23:09

Interesting how many people here think minority or LGBT will automatically vote for Kamala. It is quite condescending, like y'all think we are brainless and you need to tell us what to think and also being very rude about it. Soon, I'll be called a right wingerwhen I'm a minority who lived the best part of my adult life in the states, I graduated from the most liberal University. I don't like either candidates (can't believe out of so many smart Americans with moral compass we end up with these two), but if I have to choose, I hope he wins. I don't like her not because she's a woman, it's because she's literally so empty and dumb. If the Democrats had nominated Michelle Obama, I might consider backing them even though I still disagree with many of their ideologies.

Waiting for rude reply 😂

I think if minority or LGBT voters want to vote for a candidate that is openly and explicitly racist, ableist and misogynistic, who spouts great replacement theory, then they should go right ahead. They have the same right to a vote as anyone else. Should they choose to use it against their own interests, who am I to tell them not to?

I do think if you think she's 'dumb' (are you in primary school?), you're probably not the sharpest yourself, but you still have the right to use your vote however you want.

Was that rude enough for you?

*If you are in fact a minority, you might want to skip the highlights of tonight's Nazi rally in Madison Square Garden. I don't think they'll make for very comfortable watching.

I think they wrote their post without actually reading the thread (there hasn't been anyone really saying in the long meandering conversation that they think minority or LGBT will automatically vote for Kamala.) I doubt they will read your post either.

Oh here we go. I have a bachelor and master degree in engineering from world class universities and scholarships for science as well. Yes, I know... I'm a dumb minority I suppose. Thanks 😉

I'm not entering into any spat about dumb/not dumb, but genuinely, what are the reasons for an LGBTQ voter to vote for Trump?

I'm trying hard - like millions of others - to understand why people across various communities vote Trump, but for anyone who aligns themselves with the LGBTQ community, a vote for Trump is genuinely hard to comprehend.

I get that people vote over many factors and issues, but to vote for someone who poses a threat to the LGBTQ community - and in particular, transgender people - it seems incredibly hard to understand, and I would be really interested to hear your reasoning.

I really don't think the words 'dumb minority' are words I've ever even thought. You're the one who used the word dumb, which I literally haven't heard since about third grade, relating Kamala Harris. While I accept she might not be your cup of tea, she's very clearly not 'dumb'. But as I said, use your vote however you want. It's your business.

Oh, and I'm not sure what your 'bachelor' and 'master' degree have to do with anything? I have a bachelor's degree and a master's degree and a JD, all from prestigious universities, including ivy league ones, and I've met plenty of people along the way who weren't exactly mensa material. It's not much of a metric for making judgements as far as I can tell.

Why do you believe Kamala isn't smart? (And please don't use the word 'dumb' - it appears to be some kind of catchphrase now for anyone right-wingers don't like or wish to smear, and it isn't a useful term anyway.)

outerspacepotato · 27/10/2024 23:53

As a USian, I'm pretty scared right now that Trump will win.

The Dems have an uncanny ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Kamala Harris made a big mistake in her choice of VP candidate, either Shapiro or Kelly would have been a better choice for getting the electoral college votes needed and Shapiro likely would have delivered Pa, which is a big swing state that she really needs.

It's like watching a horror movie in slo-mo.

I didn't realize there is a language police on Mumsnet.

I have watched her interviews and I just think she doesn't have intelligent answers without a teleprompter. She is not relatable. She is no Michelle Obama either. Zero charisma and no leadership quality.

It is interesting how I get attacked as if I'm a rabid Trump supporter which I'm not.

What about policies and beliefs? Being relatable is nice, but not essential.

Is Trump relatable? Are your personal views more aligned with his?

I'm genuinely trying to understand.

No-one is attacking you or said you are a rabid Trump supporter. You said Kamala is dumb - I asked you why you thought that. That’s entirely reasonable.

I will say that using a teleprompter is commonplace. Trump also uses one; all political speakers do. Anyone on live TV does.

Welcome to the dark side…

just kidding I’m well aware that just because you aren’t a zealot of your own candidate doesn’t mean you are joining the evil.

I mean I get how the democrats were painted into the corner they are in now. If they didn’t go with Kamala they would have lost an epic amount of money already raised for the Biden/Harris ticket. But really she’s as unlikable as HRC is a nowhere near as intelligent . At best she held 15% of her party and that was after only hanging around the 5% mark during her only primary.

hell… Trump has always been a flawed candidate… but he gets his voters to the election booth.

There are different kinds of intelligence, so I'm sure it's not that you have a low IQ. It's just that verbal reasoning is obviously not your forte. I recommend you stick to designing bridges or whatever and stop fancying yourself well informed about politics. Bragging about your education doesn't make your posts more impressive. It's considered gauche.
That's good, free advice and you're welcome.

Good on you for being so patient. I wish I could do that, but I'm an old grump, so I ran out of patience eons ago.

There just seems to be a massive disparity in the standards people expect from Trump and Harris (and I suspect that's down to sexism).

Harris is not a great candidate and does not always give particularly insightful answers. From her better moments, and her CV, it is plain as day that she isn't "dumb", though.

Trump mostly talks incoherent nonsense, clearly lacking even a baseline understanding of various issues, nor does he have the curiosity or capacity to learn (he famously would not read briefings prepared for him). If any other candidate, particularly a woman, cut short a Town Hall event an hour early, deciding instead to dance badly to random music for an hour, their career would be immediately over.

And sadly, that he seems to be one of the least intelligent people to ever hold high office is not even his worst characteristic.

I do suspect he'll win, though.

You're not being attacked! People are just asking you questions about the views on both candidates that you have just posted.

This is Mumsnet, a UK site, and if you want to see people being attacked, go onto any thread where the OP says she doesn't like her mother in law! It's absolutely brutal.

This thread, considering the subject matter, has mostly been polite debate. The rudest posters have tended to be Trump supporters.

BustingBaoBun · 28/10/2024 08:22

I think saying you are being attacked when it isn't happening...is because you are supporting something that is wrong so you expect to be attacked.

I also think you don't like Harris so will vote for anyone who isn't her, however awful they are.
I don't think Kamala Harris is 'dumb', empty or lacks charisma. I could say lots about Trump on that. He was incapable of reading daily intel reports as POTUS, even when they had been rewritten with bullet points. He is severely lacking in intelligence himself and just relies on insulting many different ethnicities, the military, disabled, and ALL women.

Did I say all services? I’m not including the ones people voluntarily exclude themselves from such as using private healthcare.

They fund a number of services they are excluded from themselves such as funded childcare. Quite easy for a higher earner to have a bill that is 50k per child higher than a lower earner who they have to subsidise. They may also have to pay the costs using income that has been taxed at 62%.

The system has too many disincentives for higher earners. I know plenty who are looking at alternatives such as working fewer hours or retiring younger.

It’s an inconvenient fact for many that the UK taxes low/mid range earners too little and higher earners too much. Tax experts all agree on this but also acknowledge that it is politically difficult to act on this as many believe the opposite to be true.

I've no idea about the details tbh as I'm in the Irish Republic. But...surely one answer would be to try and get the super rich to pay some tax.

Though , when our ex Taoiseach Bertie Ahern was asked about this he replied ' I'm in the world long enough to know people pay tax in different ways.'

Pick the bones from that ! I doubt Keir Starmer would be any better. The EU is forcing Ireland to collect some tax from the global corporations. But they have no sway in Britain so...

This is a ‘comedian’ who performed at Trump’s rally (last night ?)
I believe Ms. Harris was also called the ‘Antichrist’ at the same rally.
They’re not even bothering to hide who they are anymore:

Yep exactly this, the bar is so drastically diff for each candidate. For Harris the bar is what the bar should be for a politician, for Trump the bar is don't be an absolute dipshit and he usually fails that miserably. It's infuriating. I sincerely hope Trump doesn't win though, then we are all well and truly fucked.
