To hope that Donald Trump doesn’t win the election

RosaMoline · 21/10/2024 16:05

….it’s getting closer.
I was hoping that Kamala would be a shoo-in for the presidency, but looking at the betting odds, I’m feeling quite pessimistic.
It’s incomprehensible to me that a convicted felon, racist, rapist, liar and misogynist who spurred on an insurrection - after everything that’s happened - is running for office again and may very well win.
It’s comforting to read though that fellow Brits DON’T support him.
Apart from Reform. Obviously.

I have never blamed Democrats for the fall of R v. W. I’ve questioned why they didn’t do anything in the past 50 years to mitigate it.

It's worth reading the book. It explains a lot of things you are asking about.

Is the tax rate of 62% due to the removal of the tax free allowance which starts at a salary of £100,000 and the removal of child benefit if you earn more than £60,000? Both measures were introduced by Conservative governments.

Your tax rate maybe much higher than the rate for the low paid, but if you are earning over £100,000 you will have much more disposable income and a much higher standard of living than someone on £20,000 so how is it fair to tax them more and you less?

Are you seriously suggesting that someone on 100k shouldn’t have a better standard of living than someone earning 20k?

In many ways that is the crux of the problem. If the differential between the standard of living you have at 20k and 100k isn’t significant enough then many people simply won’t bother earning more.

People at all levels of income need to be incentivised to try and earn more. The current system fails to that in many instances.

Of course I'm not suggesting that. You currently have a much better standard of living than someone earning £20,000 and I'm not suggesting that you should pay more income tax than you are already. I'm saying that the person earning £20,000 shouldn't be taxed more, which is what you are suggesting.

Trump yesterday talking about hydrogen cars. And people vote for him? 😮🙄😮
And insist Harris can't string a sentence together 🤔

Trump: There will be no hydrogen. They tend to blow up and once they blow up you are not recognizable anymore. No, they say that's the hottest new thing. Hydrogen does. Anybody in the, they say it's so hot. The problem is when it's not, when it's not hot, it's bad. It's bad. So, I don't want to do that. They say for the most part here is for the most part it's really wonderful. But when it goes bad it's over, you're not recognizable. They call the wife. Please come and inspect to see whether or not this is your husband. He's lying against a tree and the tree has a lot of red on it... Is that ok for everybody

Dementia. He used to just be a narcissistic idiot. Now he's a narcissistic idiot who needs to be in a memory care facility. He's absolutely not fit for public office of any kind. Anybody who thinks somebody who babbles like a lunatic and spends 40 minutes of a town hall dancing to his Spotify list should be President could also use a mental health check-up.

Amongst other things - if he wins I will have a lot of empathy with those Democratic world leaders who may have to interract with him. Total cringe fest.

So do you think that Kamala and the Democrats will do what Trump and the Republicans did in 2020, i.e. refuse to accept the result, tell electors to 'find' a few thousand more votes in key states, initiate a load of (failed) legal challenges and then incite an angry mob to storm the Capitol?

No. They won't need to. Because they'll win... 🤦‍♀️

Whatever happens, I wish the people of the US good luck. They're gonna need it.

It's not his project 25 at all and he has said he wants nothing to do with it. There's plenty of valid reasons to dislike trump but you shouldn't just make stuff up

This would be funny if it wasn't for the subject matter.

I don't like Trump, but his administration was amazing for the USA. Biden didn't really do anything, and Harris seems utterly useless. At least she finally has some sort of manifesto on her website now - for the longest time she had absolutely nothing to say.

I think it's going to be an absolute landslide in Trump's favour.

Amazing a country run by a bunch of loony tunes, he is horrible lowest if the low, come on he wants to become a dictator, he worships them not your God, he is most like the devil in disguise , he has a distaste of invalids, people of colour, women and Lbgt community's. HE IS A VERY DANGEROUS MAN .

There's a Trump rally going on right now at Madison Square Garden. It's all a bit reminiscent of the Nazi Rally that was held in MSG in 1939.

A comedian called Tony Hinchcliffe just told this joke:

'There's literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. Yeah, I think it's called Puerto Rico.'

There are 1 million Puerto Ricans in New York and 1.1 million Puerto Ricans in Florida. Let's hope they all hear this and remember it when they vote.

AndBreatheeeee · 27/10/2024 21:01

@saltinesandcoffeecups well @Brinny 's not wrong 🤷🏻‍♀️

AndBreatheeeee · 27/10/2024 21:01

@thepariscrimefiles let's hope 🤞

BustingBaoBun · 27/10/2024 21:05

And that Hinchcliffe man said even worse about Latinos. It's so bad I honestly do not want to repeat it.

Another man speaking actually said 'this is the first time I've been asked to speak at a Nazi rally'

Those on the fence need to look and listen.

Yes, it was disgusting. None of the jokes are funny though. The audience is cheering at the racism and spite but they're not really laughing.

Someone reporting from outside the venue said there is a very menacing atmosphere. It's just a hate fest directed at minorities and Democrats.

DuncinToffee · 27/10/2024 21:40

From the BBC overage

The speakers so far have adopted a range of tones and shared several different ideas and anecdotes, but some of the dark commentary that I’ve heard this afternoon - including jokes that border on or cross into outright racism - is quite notable.

Isthisreasonable · 27/10/2024 21:49

MelainesLaugh · 21/10/2024 20:25

I’ve said it on here before, but at least he is passionate about his country. If our politicians were even half as passionate we might not be in the state we are now.

He did only win the first election because he was up against Hilary Clinton, I would’ve voted for him over her any day of the week. Out of the candidates now I would probably vote again for him, even if Biden was still in the running. He’s almost the best of a bad lot.

Now if he’d been up against someone like Obama, no chance!

He's not passionate about the US or Americans. His only passion is himself.

Well it says it all, hate, disgusting humiliating jokes the Trump supporters think are worth a laugh, they are whipping the racism taunt, are they hoping for civil unrest,if he wins the last one out turn the light switch to off, who would want to live in a country that hates people who are different in looks ,ability, sexuality and relugion , no disrespect but are the American citizens relising they are dealing with a nazi activist .

Jesus wept. Noones suggesting that at all. Just that you can afford a higher rate of tax.

biscuitandcake · 27/10/2024 22:06

"People at all levels of income need to be incentivised to try to earn more"

I am not sure if that's even true anyway. It is good to incentivize wealth creators, innovators etc. But if everyone is trying to earn more that means no-one is working as a care assistant, garbage collector, food processing worker, nurse etc etc. Maybe those jobs should be better paid, but realistically some jobs will always pay more than others, and how much jobs pay doesn't depend on how important they are. We could make it so all jobs pay the same or the government could mandate wages for different sectors but that would be actual communism. So actually, I don't want the nurse looking after my sick mother to be so incentivized to earn more that she leaves to become a silicon valley tech bro. I would rather she stayed to look after my sick mum and that requires her being able to afford a decent home, with decent education for her children, a decent retirement plan etc. She might not have chosen a career that lets her buy a Tesla, but she shouldn't be punished for that altruism by worrying about how she pays the electric bills. I also don't want the only people doing those jobs to be people that are incapable of doing anything else.
