To hope that Donald Trump doesn’t win the election

1000 replies

RosaMoline · 21/10/2024 16:05

….it’s getting closer.
I was hoping that Kamala would be a shoo-in for the presidency, but looking at the betting odds, I’m feeling quite pessimistic.
It’s incomprehensible to me that a convicted felon, racist, rapist, liar and misogynist who spurred on an insurrection - after everything that’s happened - is running for office again and may very well win.
It’s comforting to read though that fellow Brits DON’T support him.
Apart from Reform. Obviously.

Roe set a baseline for abortion services and their availability across the US. Striking it down has created many areas where abortion is not available at all - and women have died because of it. You can whinge about federal overreach all you like - women are dead because Trump stacked the Supreme Court with judges who would strike down Roe and the blood of those dead women is on his hands.

That's been debunked. The woman died of sepsis as a result of the abortion "medication" she took.

Even so, why are you so concerned about women dying but not babies?

Is this the woman who was denied a D&C for over 20 hours in a Georgia hospital who died on the operating table, and Georgia's maternal mortality review committee recently deemed her death "preventable?

Why are pro-lifers like you only bothered about foetuses/babies when they're in the womb but don't give a fuck about them once they've been born? I'm presuming that you think that children dying in school shootings are a price worth paying as long as you can keep all your guns.

Birdscratch · 26/10/2024 19:45

She died because of bad law. The doctors wouldn’t perform a necessary medical procedure for fear of being sued.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/sep/19/georgia-abortion-ban

Georgia’s abortion ban outlawed the D&C procedure, making it a felony to perform except in cases of managing a “spontaneous” or “naturally occurring” miscarriage. Because Thurman had taken abortion pills, her miscarriage was illegal to treat. She suffered in a hospital bed for 20 hours, developing sepsis and beginning to experience organ failure. By the time the Georgia doctors were finally willing to treat her, it was too late.

Amber Thurman was killed by Georgia's abortion ban. There will be others | Moira Donegan

Thurman, a 28-year-old mother, died because Georgia barred doctors from doing a simple procedure to save her life

As soon as you start talking about blood on his hands, you have to appreciate that the governments will always have blood on their hands. Either the blood of aborted babies, or of mothers who weren't able to access legal abortion. The question is one of ethical and moral line drawing, and in a democracy, its essential that we maintain the foundations that allow the people to make these decisions.

Also, many American voters will be looking at what Democrat and Republican policies have delivered at state and city level - taxes, unemployment, investment etc.
The election isn't just about which candidate is the least crazy.

Looks like this election is just about that. After hearing the dreadful Kamala Harris laughing like a demented hyena I'd vote Trump is slightly less crazy.

You missed the bit where I said ".....or of mothers who can't get access to legal abortions".

Quoting out of context is how propagandists mischaracterise their opponents arguments.

Who's really the zealot?

You're more put off by her laugh than you are by Trump having decades of accusations of sexual assault (recently found liable for one by a judge) and 34 felony convictions?

Goodness.

a convicted felon, racist, rapist, liar and misogynist Don't forget ableist. And all the other documented fuckery.

The fact that all this is true and people still think he's someone who should be given the highest office in the US baffles me. OK so you agree with his politics. But he's an admitted sex offender!!! How can you think he's OK to be in a room with humans, never mind running the place? There are other people who share his politics and presumably don't do these things.

Strange isn't it. Around 50% of Americans must be thick or mad.a

This kind of repellant comment is exactly why people think Trump supporters are really bloody stupid.

Birdscratch · 26/10/2024 20:03

Nope, still you. There’s only one group of people who talk about ‘aborted babies’ and would consider a fetus to be as important as the life of the woman carrying it.

Birdscratch · 26/10/2024 20:04

I don’t think Viviennemary is a Trump supporter. She’s strongly anti abortion though.

OonaStubbs · 26/10/2024 20:05

I honestly don't care who wins, I just want it to be over. I am sick of hearing people arguing about it.

No. Not all thick and mad, although in some cases, maybe.

The reasons people vote Trump are myriad, but racism and misogyny are huge factors.

You only have to listen to a few Trump supporters to form a view, frankly, and there's plenty of material to choose from.

Birdscratch · 26/10/2024 20:04

Though compared to the abortion laws that have been introduced in several US states she’s dangerously liberal.

And if she had been allowed timely access to abortion in her own state, she'd be alive.

And then there are the women in Texas whose lives have been put at risk by that state's abortion legislation - women whose pregnancies in many cases were not viable in any case. This is what happens when you ban abortion. Women die.

Abortion is a choice between the life of the woman and everyone around her, including partners/husbands, parents and already existing children, and a child not yet born and still dependent on its host for survival.

Damn right I'm concerned about the women. The women first, every single damn time. We are not incubators.

The evidence is very clear on what reduces the numbers of abortions; I've posted it a little way back. But forced birthers like you don't want a world where women are supported. You just want them controlled. If you really wanted abortions reduced, you'd follow the lead of countries where abortion rates are low.

After seeing your mostly sour and unkind contributions to so many threads, I'm not really surprised that your allegiances lie with a demented racist adjudicated rapist.

You have no clue as to which side I come down on. You just think you know.

What I have done, is acknowledge both sides of a debate, and recognised that maintaining democratic frameworks for resolving difficult moral issues must remain paramount. It's how abortion became legal in the first place!

You have just resorted to ad hominem attack.

WorthyMauveEagle · 26/10/2024 20:14

American here and I think Trump is a vile, incompetent piece of human excrement. I share your worry OP, it would be disastrous for America and the world if Trump wins.

So you think a woman who is sadly holding a dead baby inside of her can't have a D&C?
(Which all civilised countries would agree to)

I have spoken before about this. A woman went three times for a D&C after a baby's heartbeat was absent. Her doctors in Texas said she wasn't dying so they couldn't do the procedure.

Your name goes before you. CandaceOwens

Weird

@Candaceowens
https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/257066/more-human-embryos-destroyed-through-ivf-than-abortion-every-year

Is Elon Musk also guilty of having blood on his hands because he used IVF multiple times to have as many (male) children as possible, that being the case isn't it truly awful that he is so influential to the Republican campaign? Or is he excused because he is donating money to them? Or does Trump also have blood on his hands as "the father of IVF" (dubious but OK) Or is it acceptable to block women from abortion when it saves their life, but not acceptable to block men like Elon from living their breeding dream.

FWIW I don't have a problem with IVF because I don't believe human life begins at conception. Most Catholics that do believe that, have a problem with IVF and abortion equally (see article). I actually have more respect for that consistency of position (though I disagree with it) than I do for the very weird double standard within the Republican party. And by extension, people that say they are voting for Trump but not Harris because of this issue.

Birdscratch · 26/10/2024 20:23

It’s a healthcare issue.

Roe vs Wade was to abortion what Brown vs Board of Education was to civil rights. The current court would overturn that too.
