To hope that Donald Trump doesn’t win the election

1000 replies

RosaMoline · 21/10/2024 16:05

….it’s getting closer.
I was hoping that Kamala would be a shoo-in for the presidency, but looking at the betting odds, I’m feeling quite pessimistic.
It’s incomprehensible to me that a convicted felon, racist, rapist, liar and misogynist who spurred on an insurrection - after everything that’s happened - is running for office again and may very well win.
It’s comforting to read though that fellow Brits DON’T support him.
Apart from Reform. Obviously.

Alaska used to belong to Russia so it's not that unreasonable for the US to sell them it back. It's closer to Russia than it is to the continental US, anyway.

I just don't think the people who live there would be too keen on the idea...

I’m not an expert on the opinions of all Americans but this is probably one thing that will get their attention.

2021…

There presumably was people living there when Russia sold it to the US. They dealt with it, either moved to mainland Russia or stayed in Alaska and became Americans.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 25/10/2024 21:31

Oh FFS nobody is selling Alaska to Russia. If anyone believes this please PM me as I can offer an early bird deal on California.

Fair enough the current administration has been doing their best to raise taxes.

That was a looooong time ago, the world was very different. Would you want to have the choice between uprooting yourself and living in Putin's Russia? No? Then why are you OK with doing that to other people? Then there's the raft of pesky international law that has sprung up since Alaska was last sold.

That is the dumbest article I think I’ve ever read.

For those that don’t want to bother translating it…

Random Swedish reporter (paraphrased by me): there’s going to a big news break that could end Trump’s chances. No I’m not going to break the story myself. But historically these stories are known as October surprises

Direct quote “- I know a story. I don't think it's true. But if it is true, it would end Donald Trump's campaign, says the journalist in his YouTube program "Morning Meeting".”

Commentary by me: Translation of the translation: Democrats are scared they are losing so they are going to put out a false story in the final days of the election campaign.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Just so you know, a line of laugh/cry emojis used for rhetorical purposes are overcompensation and an inadvertent confession that you are anything but amused and are childish as well. That's how people will see it, and they will not respect you.

Well shit…

This will clearly keep me up at night 🤣

Haha… it won’t and I’ll continue to mock idiotic articles like that one.

Nothatgingerpirate · 25/10/2024 21:56

Well....he will.
That's it.

Wallaw · 25/10/2024 21:57

It is an idiotic article and there's no reason whatsoever to think there's anything to it. Believe me, if anyone had anything real, they wouldn't be trailing it in a little known Swedish (? - can't be bothered going back to the previous page to remind me) publication.

The 'commentary by you' is equally idiotic. And, yup, @XChrome is correct. You don't exactly come across as the sharpest tool in the drawer. Haha

This thread is a glass house filled with dull tools (I love a mixed metaphor!)… You caught the latest bit debating the sale of Alaska to Russia? I think I’ll be ok with the lasting perception you all take away of me. 🤔 <- what does that emoji reveal about my character?

biscuitandcake · 25/10/2024 22:27

thepariscrimefiles · 25/10/2024 17:27

Are you actually saying without irony that Trump is a super smart genius?

I was being ironic. Maybe we need an irony emoji because it doesn't come across so well in writing.

pointythings · 25/10/2024 22:28

Yeah, the sale of Alaska to Russia is never going to happen. Nor is Trump going to buy Iceland. It would be nice if he didn't win the election, but that's pretty much a toss up.

Potter23 · 25/10/2024 22:31

I’m also exceptionally baffled by this!

it’s not like he’s even remotely competent either 🤔

StartupRepair · 25/10/2024 23:23

If Trump gets in, the US will step away from any action on climate change which will accelerate global warming and the scale and quantity of floods, hurricanes, fires and other disasters.

Brinny · 25/10/2024 23:32

pointythings · 25/10/2024 16:20

I don't see how you can be on the fence about the death penalty when it is an absolute certainty that it will lead to the death of innocent people. But then I don't understand how you can oppose legal abortion, knowing that abortion bans kill women. Religious morality does strange things.

Religion well many a war has broken out due to religion.

roaringmouse · 26/10/2024 00:48

Legal (and illegal) abortion, with absolute certainty, also leads to the death of innocent people. We 'other' these innocent people by calling them foetuses, or a cluster of cells or whatever, but to many, they are innocent people.

All manner of innocent people die and are killed all the time. We nevertheless have to make painfully difficult choices about life and death, based on our values, be they cultural or religious. And societies have to do the same.

I don't want for any woman to die because she can't get access to a legal abortion. But neither do I want an unborn baby to die because a woman needs an abortion.

rayofsunshine86 · 26/10/2024 01:10

I don't like Trump, but his administration was amazing for the USA. Biden didn't really do anything, and Harris seems utterly useless. At least she finally has some sort of manifesto on her website now - for the longest time she had absolutely nothing to say.

I think it's going to be an absolute landslide in Trump's favour.

XChrome · 26/10/2024 01:16

So then your choice is which is more important, sentient women or "unborn babies" who are non-sentient, therefore cannot be harmed.
It's an easy choice if you're at all rational about it. To put a non-sentient creature ahead of a woman is only possible if you massively devalue women.

But I don't believe that an unborn baby is 'a non sentient creature'.

YANBU but I think you will be disappointed.

But I don't believe that an unborn baby is 'a non sentient creature'.

Then you don't know the
facts.

The science conclusively establishes that a human fetus does not have the capacity to experience pain until after at least 24–25 weeks. Every major medical organization that has examined this issue and peer-reviewed studies on the matter have consistently reached the conclusion that abortion before this point does not result in the perception of pain in a fetus.

https://www.acog.org/advocacy/facts-are-important/gestational-development-capacity-for-pain#:~:text=The%20science%20conclusively%20establishes%20that,at%20least%2024%E2%80%9325%20weeks.

Beliefs about this should be fact based, not emotion based. These are women's lives we are talking about. Reasonable people don't wish to interfere with other people's lives just based on having some feelz and what would make them feel better. That's incredibly selfish.

Fetal Pain

Facts are important, especially when it comes to policies and discussions that impact patients. Here are the scientific facts concerning gestational development and capacity for pain.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 21/10/2024 16:24

As opposed to a woman who got her initial position ( by her own admission) by sexual favours to her boss. Who has never been elected to any office ( withdrew from her primary when it was obvious that she was going to get the smallest share of the vote). Who didn’t visit the border when she was supposed to be in charge of it?

we won’t mention the earpiece, though.

And this is (if true) worse than Trump’s open record of fascism and criminal behaviour?

It really blows my mind that you can actually think that these things are more egregious than Trumps behaviour.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 26/10/2024 01:59

So you all realize the following?;

  1. The democrats have had full power on multiple occasions and could have codified abortion rights into law in the 50 years between Roe v. Wade and the SC overturning Roe v. Wade- they didn’t and it’s conveniently a very polarizing voting issue that tends to energize their base. Now a cynical person might say that women’s rights are less important than their ability to vote.
  2. Trump is actually pro choice and has said he has no interest and will not sign any legislation banning abortion at at a federal level. He made no effort to to do anything with Roe V. Wade in his first term.
  3. Abortions are still legal in the majority of states although there are restrictions in some https://www.guttmacher.org/state-policy/explore/state-policies-abortion-bans
