To hope that Donald Trump doesn’t win the election

1000 replies

RosaMoline · 21/10/2024 16:05

….it’s getting closer.
I was hoping that Kamala would be a shoo-in for the presidency, but looking at the betting odds, I’m feeling quite pessimistic.
It’s incomprehensible to me that a convicted felon, racist, rapist, liar and misogynist who spurred on an insurrection - after everything that’s happened - is running for office again and may very well win.
It’s comforting to read though that fellow Brits DON’T support him.
Apart from Reform. Obviously.

You’re being deliberately goadie now.

You absolutely know that admiring Hitler has nothing to do with vegetarianism and everything to do with being a nazi sympathiser.

There are hundreds of millions of vegetarians out there. Living in the here and now, nobody needs to be mentioning one who mercifully topped himself because of the despicable human being he was.

And perhaps the quality of his generals can be considered in isolation to the ideaology. I wouldn't say I was being deliberately goady, I was just responding in kind to the weak and absurd arguments.

As opposed to a woman who got her initial position ( by her own admission) by sexual favours to her boss. Who has never been elected to any office ( withdrew from her primary when it was obvious that she was going to get the smallest share of the vote). Who didn’t visit the border when she was supposed to be in charge of it?

we won’t mention the earpiece, though.

Well that's all utter nonsense! She was elected as the CA AG TWICE and also as the San Francisco DA twice? The standards that women, especially women of colour, are held to is astounding.

She was in a relationship with Willie Brown, former mayor of SF, when he was separated from his wife. He also supported her first race to be the SF DA, just as he's supported other CA politicians. How is that sleeping her way to the top?!?!?

Trump's lies are unprecedented in number, egregiousness and harmfulness. Either you know that and are choosing to ignore it or you're not smart enought to understand why it matters.

This is Hillary Clinton's exact quote. It's not lovely, but in context, it's not wrong.

“You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right?” Clinton said. “The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic—you name it. And unfortunately there are people like that. And he has lifted them up.”

She said the other half of Trump’s supporters “feel that the government has let them down” and are “desperate for change.”
“Those are people we have to understand and empathize with as well,” she said.

If they had weaponised the judiciary, those cases would have been brought two years ago and Trump would be sitting in a cell right now.

Threatening military use against citizens? How about using a trillion dollar war machine against distant civilian populations to funnel money to the military industrial complex.

You do understand that I'm talking about using the United States military against United States citizens within their own country, right? Do you need me to explain that more clearly?

Like Trudeau wanted to use his military and police against his own citizens during the trucker blockade. But of course, if it's liberal politicians doing it against conservative citizens you're happy with it.

Wallaw · 24/10/2024 17:16

Well I like free speech. I think it's perfectly fine for Donald Trump to publicly admire Hitler. It is not perfectly fine that he should expect to suffer no repercussions for that, one of them being general agreement that he's not fit to be president.

What if enough of the electorate disagree?

Of course the quality of Hitler's generals can be considered in isolation. By a psychopath.

Well the majority won't. He will lose the popular vote. He could be elected nonethless (see again, electoral college).

I'm not Canadian and don't have a firm grasp on the ins and outs of their politics. I generally have liked Trudeau, but from a distance. I don't think the truckers should have held the country hostage, but I don't think Trudeau handled the situation particularly well. Interesting that you've decided for me based on some preconceived notion you seem to have formed.

For those people who don't know what this Trump cultist/conspiracy theorist poster is referring to - a quick read of the Wikipedia entry about the protest will show you how much Yelloworangetomato has distorted the issue with their framing here.

You can't reason or argue with people like this. They live in a post truth alternative reality.

This is where we are now - dealing with large numbers of people who've been thoroughly radicalised by alt-right disinformation.

I'd bet a lot of money that this poster is also a climate change denialist and covid conspiracist.

ChimneyPot · 24/10/2024 17:49

Tucker Carlson at the Trump rally in Georgia was one of the creepiest things I have seen. And the bar is pretty low.

He uses the image of Trump as Daddy coming home and spanking a 15 year old girl so it hurts because she has been a bad girl.

Same event where this apparently happened.

All totally normal here.

The Tucker Carlson thing is genuinely mind boggling. An excited middle aged man with a face like a slapped arse, talking with relish about 'spanking' a 15 year old girl.

Vom.

IVFmumoftwo · 24/10/2024 18:07

I think he is going to win it. There really ought to be an age limit for standing for president.

🤣

Goodness. Get us to the gulag.

I heard an interview with a young Russian on the BBC recently and she was asked about the generation gap between the young dissidents and the older Russians who broadly supported Putin. The young woman being interviewed explained that it was largely the reliance of older Russians on legacy media, whereas younger Russians got their news on Telegram...

Fascinates me how it's supposedly the opposite here....

Yes think you are probably abit hard of thinking (which is why you think kamala is going to win). I specifically said I'm not a Trump supporter or "pro Trump.". Just thinking he will win (based on expert opinion and betting markets etc) does not make me a supporter. Do you understand the difference. And not knowing much about Project 2025 conspiracy is not the gotcha you think it is. 😜

Edited

I haven't said I think Kamala is going to win. It's too close to call at the moment.

Apologies, you are correct. You haven't said that you support Trump, but you do support JD Vance, who is right up to his neck in Project 2025.

You criticise people who get their news from the BBC and the Guardian but you haven't said where you access your news. You say you don't have a TV licence so you can't access the BBC. Do you watch Tucker Carlson, Jordan Peterson, Russell Brand and Andrew Tate? What about GB News?

The Guardian is a left leaning publication only by comparison with the right wing TV channels and newspapers, e.g. Daily Mail, Daily Express, the Sun, the Telegraph, the Times (right leaning but more balanced than the others).

The BBC is not left leaning. It is required to be impartial. Senior positions on its Executive Board are held by Conservatives, e.g. Tim Davie, and Sir Robbie Gibb.

Don't confuse Conservative (the party) with conservative, or even right wing. These people are right wing liberals not conservatives. The BBC are emphatically not impartial, their approach to reporting womens rights are a good indication of their unwillingness or inability to be impartial.

Unherd.com has some great content.

Unherd? Owned by Paul Marshall, part owner of GB news? So impartial. 😂

"Just because he isn't to many people's taste on this side of the Atlantic"

He's a fascist.

So why not say 'just because he's a fascist'.

Because that would require you to acknowledge reality rather than framing this is a issue of differences of political 'tastes' instead of ethics.

It's you that's trying to "frame" it in a particular way by referring to him as a fascist as if it is an indisputable fact rather than your opinion. Clearly many would disagree with you.

The fact is - whatever you or I think of Trump - there are enough people in America willing to vote for him to make it, not just possible, but likely that he will be elected president.

It is also true to say he is regarded more positively in America than the UK. That you regard him as a "fascist" is entirely irrelevant. If you are an American you get one vote. If not, you get no say at all.

You're not going to find any impartial reporting. Best you can do is triangulate.

Nor did I say it was impartial - I said it was great content. It is.

queenofarles · 24/10/2024 19:30

why does it matter? It’s not like things will get better . Someone I know said "in few weeks time we will find out whether we will be able to afford groceries or start WW3.

There is a difference between impartial, which I agree is impossible, and completely partisan.

MayaPinion · 24/10/2024 19:42

I am absolutely amazed that anyone convicted of anything other that a parking ticket can stand for election of the United States. He's literally a rapist. How on earth can women vote for him when they know exactly what he thinks of them.

Where do you get your 'news' from?

X?

4chan?

'Truth' (lol) social?

Faux?

Random Youtube videos?

Infowars?

Facebook?

Breitbart?

OAN?

Do tell.

The absolute state of you responding to someone suggesting you're a climate change denialist with 'get us to the gulag'.

Do you want to 'triangulate' the sources for Trump's accusation that children are having gender affirming surgery at public school?

izimbra · 24/10/2024 20:27

@Yelloworangetomato how about 'triangulating' the sources for Trump's accusation that Haitian migrants are 'eating the cats and dogs'.

No social media nonsense mind. Only reputable news organisations.
