To hope that Donald Trump doesn’t win the election

1000 replies

RosaMoline · 21/10/2024 16:05

….it’s getting closer.
I was hoping that Kamala would be a shoo-in for the presidency, but looking at the betting odds, I’m feeling quite pessimistic.
It’s incomprehensible to me that a convicted felon, racist, rapist, liar and misogynist who spurred on an insurrection - after everything that’s happened - is running for office again and may very well win.
It’s comforting to read though that fellow Brits DON’T support him.
Apart from Reform. Obviously.

There is a difference between impartial, which I agree is impossible, and completely partisan.

Forget 'partisan'. Try 'lies'.

Like Trudeau wanted to use his military and police against his own citizens during the trucker blockade. But of course, if it's liberal politicians doing it against conservative citizens you're happy with it.

FFS, they were terrorists. They had weapons. They had committed assaults and arson in addition to terrorizing a city and choking them on toxic fumes, keeping them awake all night by blowing horns.
So that's a bullshit false comparison and you don't know what you're talking about.

For those people who don't know what this Trump cultist/conspiracy theorist poster is referring to - a quick read of the Wikipedia entry about the protest will show you how much Yelloworangetomato has distorted the issue with their framing here.

You can't reason or argue with people like this. They live in a post truth alternative reality.

This is where we are now - dealing with large numbers of people who've been thoroughly radicalised by alt-right disinformation.

I'd bet a lot of money that this poster is also a climate change denialist and covid conspiracist.

Yep, and I was there at the time. It absolutely meets the definition of terrorism. I would also bet that @Yelloworangetomato is a Covid conspiracy theorist and climate change denier. S/he didn't deny it and just deflected instead, so I take that as confirmation. There really is no reasoning with such people, but they should be blasted with a strong dose of reality just on principle alone.

Isn't it rather weak to invoke Godwins? Usually a sign that you've no actual argument

As usual, you're talking sheer nonsense. A Godwin is only possible when the subject has nothing to do with Hitler, but Hitler is being used as an irrelevant smear tactic or as a false comparison. You know, the kind of comparisons you specialize in. This is about Trump admiring Hitler.
It's not a Godwin, so pipe down.

XChrome · 24/10/2024 21:03

Wallaw · 24/10/2024 17:32

Of course the quality of Hitler's generals can be considered in isolation. By a psychopath.

True. If that’s what some people think an alpha male is, then they’ve never met one. He’s like a whiny little boy. It’s embarrassing that anyone looks up to him. If he didn’t have the cloak of money, they would see him for what he really is. Unfortunately too many people think rich people are superhuman. It’s bizarre.

Yes. Also, he's a celebrity. Americans in particular tend to lionize celebrities, though most of them are complete assholes. I think it's actually because they're assholes and utterly brazen and shameless about it. Certain people admire that and wish they could get away with it. They can't, because they aren't rich and famous, so they have to enjoy it vicariously through people like Trump.

Possibly because in Germany rampant, uncontrolled hate speech has fairly recently in historical terms created a social and political environment where the mass murder of millions of German citizens was considered tolerable.

If that’s what you think caused the holocaust you need to go back to school.

A Trump presidency could damage UK trade almost as much as Brexit.

Why?

Trump's promised a 10-20% tariff on UK imports.

On ALL imports.

The US is our second biggest export market after the EU.

That's just one of Trump's many lies. Exporters don't pay tarrifs. Importers do. Trump has ridiculously proposed a 60% tarrif on Chinese goods and doesn't seem to understand that US companies will be paying it, therefore so will consumers. Or he just doesn't care. It will only hurt Americans, yet Trumpers are willing to vote for things that hurt them. It's mind boggling how stupid and brainwashed Trumpers are.

I don't get how anyone can be so certain that their version of the truth is the right one. Not to claim truth is relative, but pinning it down is not easy.

And to write people's opinions off, by labelling them as alt right, or deplorables, or COVID conspiracists or climate change denialists just seems so reductionist. Critical thinking surely requires that we question and test everything, and keep doing do. Not just accept what we're told or presented with by one source or another.

Millions of very intelligent people will vote for Trump and Harris. Just as millions of intelligent people decided to abstain from taking the COVID vaccine and others took three shots. It's not an alternative reality. Just reality.

I haven't said I think Kamala is going to win. It's too close to call at the moment.

Apologies, you are correct. You haven't said that you support Trump, but you do support JD Vance, who is right up to his neck in Project 2025.

You criticise people who get their news from the BBC and the Guardian but you haven't said where you access your news. You say you don't have a TV licence so you can't access the BBC. Do you watch Tucker Carlson, Jordan Peterson, Russell Brand and Andrew Tate? What about GB News?

The Guardian is a left leaning publication only by comparison with the right wing TV channels and newspapers, e.g. Daily Mail, Daily Express, the Sun, the Telegraph, the Times (right leaning but more balanced than the others).

The BBC is not left leaning. It is required to be impartial. Senior positions on its Executive Board are held by Conservatives, e.g. Tim Davie, and Sir Robbie Gibb.

I have subscriptions to spectatator/telegraph so quite conservative but occasionally read Guardian/independent. Also like triggernometry, Andrew gold podcasts etc. Not any of those you say. Can't watch gb news as don't have a TV licence as I said. The idea that the BBC is impartial is hilarious which is why they're losing alot of viewers. I don't think Tim Davies and Robbie gibb are traditional conservatives although may indeed call themselves conservatives. Most young people don't watch it so I think their days are numbered thank goodness. I stopped watching them after their dire performances during Brexit and lockdowns.

This is a person with a tendency to stubbornly deny facts, even when presented with proof. You'll not make a dent in that level of denial, but good on you for trying.

Tbf, I don’t think intelligent and scientifically literate are the same thing. But by the same token you can fall for a conspiracy theory after reading plausible sounding conspiracy theorists from the internet and not necessarily be a conspiracy theorist.

roaringmouse · 24/10/2024 21:39

I had to laugh at the idea of the BBC being impartial too.

You don't win anything until you answer the question.

Vcal2017 · 24/10/2024 21:41

I’m in Australia and I can’t understand why people aren’t more concerned. Donald Trumps tariffs alone will change so many economies. The project 25 manifesto will result in deaths. There’s likely to be violence after the election: and the general destabilisation of democracy is already underway which is exactly what Putin wanted. But people think he’s a funny goofy uncle who says off the cuff things….

Yelloworangetomato · 24/10/2024 21:43

A covid conspiracy theorist and climate change denier?

I remember when the dangers of covid were considered a right wing conspiracy theory as it was in the beginning. The very first people wearing masks were ridiculed and calls to close the border deemed racist. A fair few of the covid 'conspiracies' turned out to be actual facts in the end didn't they? Remember when the lab leak theory was censored on social media platforms... I bet you still wear a mask

And with regards to the climate, I think the damage is irreversible, its too late, we're in big trouble, but all the wind turbines, PV panels and EVs aren't going to save us.

Anyway, I'm not engaging further with this slop

So you're not going to answer my question then? I asked you what you think was the primary cause of the Holocaust, if not Nazi politics and ideology. Genuinely interested - but also genuinely thinking you don't have an answer.

Okay, but plenty of scientifically literate people question accepted mainstream narratives around COVID and climate change too. Ditto gender ideology.
