To hope that Donald Trump doesn’t win the election

1000 replies

RosaMoline · 21/10/2024 16:05

….it’s getting closer.
I was hoping that Kamala would be a shoo-in for the presidency, but looking at the betting odds, I’m feeling quite pessimistic.
It’s incomprehensible to me that a convicted felon, racist, rapist, liar and misogynist who spurred on an insurrection - after everything that’s happened - is running for office again and may very well win.
It’s comforting to read though that fellow Brits DON’T support him.
Apart from Reform. Obviously.

I have a variety @duncintoffee Unfortunately I am abit of a news junkie. But have not had a TV licence since covid, and would not read Guardian politics (although do like their features) as they are wrong on everything.

Yes @goingforalongwalk your post makes the most sense here. I have realised from other threads that most mnetters who post on political threads get all their news from bbc/guardian and are pretty clueless and in no way representative of the general population. They think Starmer and Labour are great even though they only got 20% of voters to vote for them (one of the lowest ever of an election winner) and most of the electorate think they're massively incompetent, vindictive and/or mad as a hatter. As you say it doesn't matter what they think and Trump is probably going to win, voted for by people who are much more knowledgeable of US politics (the US electorate).

Trump is probably going to win, voted for by people who are much more knowledgeable of US politics (the US electorate).

I am part of the US electorate and I can assure you that the knowledgeable amongst it are voting for Harris.

And, again, he has never won the popular vote and won't this time either. The majority of voters will vote for Harris. If he's elected, it's due to a quirk of the US system that gives majority rule to a minority of the populace.

So have the majority of people posting on political threads, the variety of news sources that is.

Well my major sources are The New York Times, The Washington Post, The FT, The Atlantic, The New Yorker, The Economist and The Bulwark. Sometimes Mother Jones, Vanity Fair and Nature. I'm pretty informed.

Surely everyone hopes he doesn't win.....

The markets have the probability of him winning at just over 60% so I’m not sure you’re assertion is anywhere near accurate.

Yet you had never heard of Project 2025?
I cannot believe you are a bit of a news junkie if you have never heard of something that has been all over the media for months.

You are the Trump supporter that hasn't heard of Project 2025 and you are calling people who get their news from the BBC/Guardian pretty clueless!

The pro-Trump posters on here come across as spectacularly ill informed.

BloodandGlitter · 24/10/2024 12:24

Oh my god, I can't believe the mainstream media are misinterpreting everything he says! Clearly when he said that he meant he wanted to open up more opportunities for men with genital abnormalities in military command roles. It is frankly ridiculous that you would interpret that as him wanting to be like Hitler you sheeple etc etc.

biscuitandcake · 24/10/2024 12:57

Zahariel · 24/10/2024 11:55

Firstly - you have to REALLY ask yourself WHY - given Trump is most of the things you say, that HALF the US voting base is voting for Trump AGAIN? AKA - How bad is the other guy?

Clearly, awful.

Secondly

How dare you judge half the US, AND 21% of the UK?

"It’s comforting to read though that fellow Brits DON’T support him.
Apart from Reform. Obviously."

It's people like you, without the slightest insight outside of their own political bubble that has lead to this disaster, here and everywhere else.

Kamala thinks lesbians can have a penis, for that alone she deserves to loose.

Mate.
457 British soldiers died in Afghanistan. The only reason they were there is because America (not the UK, America) was attacked and under article 5 of NATO members states were obliged to respond if one member was attacked (again America). Trump publicly boasted that not only did he not think that America should uphold its end of the NATO treaty, but that he positively encouraged other countries to attack America's NATO allies. If the roles were reversed and a UK leader was openly calling for America to be attacked (and disregarding the sacrifice of American war dead) and half the UK was supporting him, I think Americans would be much much ruder than British people are being here. Of course, Americans have their own reasons for voting for Harris or Trump which have nothing to do with foreign policy of what Britain thinks. Fair enough. But we are absolutely entitled to make our own judgements about the situation and that doesn't make you a victim. But maybe you think even American soldiers who die in war are losers and suckers like Trump does. You can judge them. I can judge you.

Yes think you are probably abit hard of thinking (which is why you think kamala is going to win). I specifically said I'm not a Trump supporter or "pro Trump.". Just thinking he will win (based on expert opinion and betting markets etc) does not make me a supporter. Do you understand the difference. And not knowing much about Project 2025 conspiracy is not the gotcha you think it is. 😜

Ah, the irony. Also, a bit is two words. And, sorry, but the existence of Project 2025 is indisputable fact, not conspiracy.

Biggest fucking reach I have ever seen, saying something.

You wrote a super capitalised screed along the lines of how DARE you question people's voting choices people blah blah blah. (While quite cheerfully criticising and generalising about the other 50% of Americans who vote the other way.) All the criticism here has been very mild compared to the stuff that Trump says on a daily basis about other countries. No-one has called on here for Putin to bomb America for example and if they did it would rightly be deleted. But Trump has literally said much much worse. Can you not see the double standards? And what's worse is I don't even think you are American, so you are getting performatively outraged about people in a completely different country to you most of whom, including the Trump voters, are too mature to get pompously overwrought at strangers on Mumsnet discussing their voting choices. Its bizarre.
And its not overreach. It would be overreach if I insisted it should be in the forefront of American's minds. But I am allowed to care about something that factually happened in very recent history and affected people I care about.

Menopausalsourpuss · 24/10/2024 13:24

And all those sources are leftist @wallaw apart from the magazines so that explains why you're not well informed and out of touch with the average American.

All of those sources are reputable media with fact-checking and editorial process, @Menopausalsourpuss. I don't think you listed your preferred sources? Other than you distrust the Guardian and don't have a TV license.

BustingBaoBun · 24/10/2024 13:29

And not knowing much about Project 2025 conspiracy is not the gotcha you think it is.

Why do you call it 'a conspiracy' when it is a published document that anyone can read?
You cannot make any judgement on it, given you hadn't even heard of it, as of yesterday, despite being a self acclaimed 'news junkie'.

Yelloworangetomato · 24/10/2024 13:41

Wallaw · 24/10/2024 10:17

Lying incessantly.
Othering immigrants.
Calling people names.
Threatening his opponents.
Threatening to use the military against citizens while simultaneously denigrating the enlisted military.
Admiring Hitler.

to name just a few things

But I imagine you're quite relaxed about these things when others do them...

I literally know of no one else who does these things. At least not publicly. But, no, I don't envision that I would be quite relaxed about them if I did.

Do you run across that quite often?
