To think JellyCats cost a ridiculous amount..

Some examples, see pictures.

These are listed on vinted.

One seller wants £32 for a small plush croissant. 67 people have 'favourited' it.

Another wants £30 for an equally small slice of pizza, or whatever it was.

They sell well.

DD wants the birthday cake one, that's also £30.

AIBU to think they are hugely overpriced? What's so special about them that makes them cost triple what you'd pay for other plush toys?!

They are ridiculously overpriced but they're sooooo cute and soft and squishy! 😂

I use mine as home decor. Really makes the house seem quirky and fun without having to go all out with bright colours splashed everywhere.

Currently watching TV with the popcorn one perched, legs dangling over the corner of the screen!

Needmorelego · 20/10/2024 22:19

I know.
It's crazy.
My daughter has approximately half a dozen regular size bunnies and about 10 of the small ones. Her ambition is to get one of every colour.
Please send help.....😂

Spagettifunction · 20/10/2024 22:21

They are expensive but so cute

my son has two of them

BlackFriYay · 20/10/2024 22:21

They are very cute, I will admit.

£105 for a sodding leaf though?! 😂

It's driven by the market OP. They cost that much because people are willing to pay it. Supply and demand.

dreamer24 · 20/10/2024 22:23

I don't get it either OP. £105 for a leaf indeed 😂 More fool anyone who pays that!

BeensOnToost · 20/10/2024 22:24

Luxury starts where necessity ends.

People want, people pay.

Having an opinion on it is pointless.

TheSnugHare · 20/10/2024 22:25

They’re not even big enough to cuddle you’re right it’s ridiculous

BlackFriYay · 20/10/2024 22:26

£1,000 for this one!

I'm sitting here slack jawed in amazement. I'd never heard of these things until today when DD announced wanting one for Christmas.

£1,000. Just... why? 😱

StillAtTheRestaurant · 20/10/2024 22:29

They're very collectable because they're always bringing out new designs and retiring old ones so that drives up the resale price. They've also started doing exclusives in certain places, e.g. the fish and chips collection which you can only get at Selfridges. Also they are very cute and Instagramable. Some get sold out pretty quickly because they go viral. Ms or Mr Jellycat must be a millionaire by now!

We have a few of the bakery items but I certainly didn't pay £32 for the croissant, more like twenty I think. I would never pay crazy money, they are just toys at the end of the day!

dragonfliesandbees · 20/10/2024 22:29

I was looking at some the other day and was shocked by the price of some of them. They are so soft and lovely though and last really well. My 9 year old daughter has slept with her bunny every night since she was a toddler. Cost per cuddle is less than a penny at this point!

WomanFromTheNorth · 20/10/2024 22:30

I sold my daughter's whole collection at a car boot for 2 quid each. One woman bought the lot - about 20 of them! I understand why she did now 🙄
Yes, they are very cute though.

Bloodylovecheese · 20/10/2024 22:30

If you don't mind not having the brand name there are cheaper versions on Chinese websites... but they're all made in China probably

I have two octopuses and a big hermit crab ☺️ They're lovely toys - I like the food ones.

I’ve recently seen similar things to jellycats (and these) in Asda and primark as well.

ChunkyMunky · 20/10/2024 22:33

I’d take some of the Vinted prices with a pinch of salt. You can list something for any price you like, doesn’t mean it will actually sell.

Check the RRP of new ones before you buy on Vinted / eBay.

WingsofRain · 20/10/2024 22:33

I’ve got boxes of Beanie Babies that sold for these types of prices years ago. They are worth a couple of quid now if you are lucky.

I’ve not seen these before but they seem very similar as collectibles. Maybe if you wait ten years they will be available by the bagful for a fiver. 😁

StressedQueen · 20/10/2024 22:34

They definitely do but they are soo adorable. I have 4 daughters who are all getting Jellycats this Christmas!

IAKnowyou · 20/10/2024 22:34

They have amazing copies on Temu & Ali Express. And most of them are actually good quality. Thats if your kids don't mind not having the actual jellycat tag on it.
I've got the pain au chocolate one. They really are cute. But I agree, ridiculously priced

thepurplepenguin · 20/10/2024 22:34

I have the croissant one sitting on my shelf, along with a pain au raisin. Received as a gift but I'm sure it wouldn't have cost £32 new!

Oh splendid thank you, this is very helpful!

She can have one of each then 😂

If they were cheap they wouldn't be so popular. They need to be expensive enough that only the wealthiest kids in the class can have a varied collection, so that people can be envious of them and aspire to own the particular one they fixate on. If they were £5 they wouldn't be valued and treasured so no one would aspire to own them.

drspouse · 20/10/2024 22:37

I feel a bit better about my DCs and their Beanie Baby obsession.
