To think JellyCats cost a ridiculous amount..

BlackFriYay · 20/10/2024 22:15

Some examples, see pictures.

These are listed on vinted.

One seller wants £32 for a small plush croissant. 67 people have 'favourited' it.

Another wants £30 for an equally small slice of pizza, or whatever it was.

They sell well.

DD wants the birthday cake one, that's also £30.

AIBU to think they are hugely overpriced? What's so special about them that makes them cost triple what you'd pay for other plush toys?!

I think they are cute but would never spend silly money on them.
I have seen them on the dashboard of some people's cars.

JMSA · 20/10/2024 23:14

They are so bloody cute. I'm not fussed for the bunny or the ones like that, but the Jellycat Amuseables are ADORABLE.

FlyingPandas · 20/10/2024 23:16

They are adorable but Christ on a bike, the prices!!!

Met a friend for coffee at a local garden centre recently and we spent a happy five or ten minutes being horrified about Jellycat prices. They had a whole Jellycat Christmas section and we were simultaneously enchanted and appalled. £38 for a Jellycat candycane...just no (but so cute).

Needmorelego · 20/10/2024 23:16

@MooseBeTimeForSnow the tree looks like he's being kidnapped because of the way his mouth is covered up 😂

Much prefer a squishmallow!

Was going to say this

Dd had maybe 8/10 squish's

They are soft and lovely and around £6 for a medium

likeitallagain · 20/10/2024 23:17

My daughter has a medium size bunny and a matching (tiny) bunny

The tiny bunny was purchased from Addenbrooke's hospital gift shop. I was horrified at it being £17 at the checkout!

It's tiny. About the size of a teaspoon

Very cute though

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 20/10/2024 23:20

@Needmorelego I just wanted to make sure that he got home safely!

Dolallytats · 20/10/2024 23:07

There's a range of soft toys called Palm Pals that are much cheaper than Jellycat. They come in all sorts of animals, foods, snowflakes etc. My daughter loves them.....as does my purse!!

Just googled and found this on offer for another 10 mins for less then £5

Bought one

Thanks

My two started collecting about 18 months ago and managed to get about 50 pieces between them.
Theychanged interests so I'm selling most of them.
They resell close to retail value or more (retired ones).
They are just so soft, squishy and cute.

Needmorelego · 20/10/2024 23:21

@likeitallagain my daughter's Jellycat bunny collection started thanks to the gift shop at a hospital. She saw them when we went to the first appointment and I foolishly said if she had to have an operation we would get one.
3 operations and several check up appointments later.......🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇

I'm glad I posted this and got put on to the cheaper versions. I'm going to fill DD's stocking with a bunch of them, at less than £4 each I'm thrilled and she'll be over the moon.

She's only 5.5 so won't care about the official label.

These ones are very sweet.

More expensive brands tend to be more ethical/cruelty free as well as being committed to fair labour.
They aren’t always perfect but are often working their way towards meeting these targets. Really cheap products are often produced using inferior materials and rarely stick to fair labour which is reflected in the cost.

I know we can’t be perfect and not many people have the spare cash to spend on expensive brands but it’s worth looking into how the very cheap knockoffs (and the brands for that matter) are made and the factories they come from as there may be a middle ground.

I am aware some of the more expensive products can also be highly unethical, just saying it can take a couple of minutes on Google to find out.

im definitely not preaching but just giving a different point of view.

PS I’m not loaded, don't understand the very high costs of some brands and dono own Jellycats for furnishing or otherwise :)

Bigstuffypillow · 20/10/2024 23:22

Oh they are cute!
I have Beanie babies in the loft that DD's collected years ago, some of them were very expensive!

AutumnLeaves24 · 20/10/2024 23:25

BlackFriYay · 20/10/2024 22:36

Oh splendid thank you, this is very helpful!

She can have one of each then 😂

If you don't mind they have no safety standards, so god knows what chemicals are in them.

I wouldn't allow them.

plus they're not going to have the feel of Jelly cats.

YourLastNerve · 20/10/2024 23:28

You are paying a premium for the creativity & inventiveness of their design team.

Yes a chinese factory can sew a similar toy for less material cost & labour but they won't come up with those original (often rather detailed) designs & themes. The people doing that job are paid & deserve reward.

BattedAnEyebrow · 20/10/2024 23:30

I'm not saying spending £30 on a Jellycat birthday cake is a good idea but I don't see the point of 'filling her stocking' with lots of different soft toys that she hasn't asked for.

Gagaandgag · 20/10/2024 23:30

There are a few gift shops we happen to go in regularly which stock them and my children have a good laugh at looking at the cost. They have one rabbit each which they had for one Christmas.
I have never quite understood what makes them so different to other brands to require that much of a price difference!!

They are expensive but great quality and the fakes just aren’t the same. Kids know.
My teenager has asked for another one and I will get her one
If your budget will run to it get her what she has asked for. She will know the difference and so will her friends
They hold their value (and increase once discontinued) so you can always sell on again if she no longer likes it

YourLastNerve · 20/10/2024 23:32

I don't like buying the cheap Chinese knock off versions off stuff because then the profit of british creativity just ends up in china. we are already too expensive a location to actually manufacture anything, all we have left is the "clever" bit like design

BloodandGlitter · 20/10/2024 23:36

I have two Aliexpress ones, they're identical in every way to the real thing, just a different label. China or Vietnam, neither is putting money in British designers pockets.

Because they'll make her happy of course.

Besides, they're 18-28cm each so her normal sized stocking isn't going to hold dozens.

I've bought three which I'm sure she'll love.

Edited to add - I have forwarded the JellyCat birthday cake request to her dad. He can absorb the cost of that one 😂

DS was given one as a baby. He threw up blueberries over it. It washed it by hand and all the stains came out and it retained it was as good as new. Bath time (sometimes unavoidable) for other toys has resulted in the beloved teddy/animal not 'feeling' right.
