To think JellyCats cost a ridiculous amount..

Some examples, see pictures.

These are listed on vinted.

One seller wants £32 for a small plush croissant. 67 people have 'favourited' it.

Another wants £30 for an equally small slice of pizza, or whatever it was.

They sell well.

DD wants the birthday cake one, that's also £30.

AIBU to think they are hugely overpriced? What's so special about them that makes them cost triple what you'd pay for other plush toys?!

Well, yes. I was referring to the croissant specifically though which is still available and is cheaper new than Vinted.

Maybe the folk who justify their excessive shopping habits by buying everything secondhand, but don't actually bother to check if it's any cheaper than new? 🫣

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 22/10/2024 16:21

Yes they are. But no one has to pay it and you can just enjoy pictures of cute vampire aubergines on the internet if you don't want to stump up the cash.

Awww my Amazon bunny came today for less than £5. Someone linked it

Was so cute and furry

Dd will love

Putthekettleon73 · 22/10/2024 17:37

I used to work for jellycat. Long time ago and it was significantly cheaper thean now. They are designed here but still made in china. Just fyi! The mark up from what they cost to produce and ship here must be astronomical now.

hby9628 · 22/10/2024 17:42

They are cute! My DD loves the small ones. She has a really lovely sushi one

Thinking of grabbing the Christmas cookies for them this year

BloodandGlitter · 22/10/2024 18:09

I wonder if the problem people have with Aliexpress is just that it's in China? B&M have knock off ones too, so did Aldi actually too. If you're going to outsource your work to cheap Chinese factories, then you run the risk of your design being stolen.

Needmorelego · 22/10/2024 18:20

@BloodandGlitter there's a big difference between similar style toys and ones that are actually "knocks off" where someone has copied (stolen) the design and essentially made fakes.

AttendanceNightmares · 22/10/2024 18:23

I have a pumpkin. Think it cost about £40. It is so damn cute, though!

BloodandGlitter · 22/10/2024 18:59

@Needmorelego I believe Jellycat were taking court action over Aldi's versions and there's very little difference in the B&M ones I saw last week.

If everyone just bought counterfeits our economy would collapse. As a nation we are good at new ideas, but what’s the point of starting anything if people prefer to buy the rip offs?

But this happens all the time. Go into any Aldi and look at all the dupes for expensive makeup brands for example.

The economy won't collapse. The market can operate at both the high end and the low end, those st the lower end can't afford the higher end stuff so any money spent is better than none.

Needmorelego · 22/10/2024 21:49

@IDontHateRainbows but if a shop like Aldi sells a product that is too close to the "real" thing (ie style of the packaging) they are often told to stop selling or redesign it.
Genuine "alternative" or "own brand" makes of products are usually ok but sometimes changes do have to made.
There was a whole thing years ago with Penguin chocolate bar and the Tesco (or Asda?) own brand version that the packaging was just too much like actual Penguin bars so they were told to change it.
Every supermarket has their own brand of "Penguin" bars - that's fine. They aren't "fake". They are legit. They just can't call them "Penguinz" or something similar.

I found a 10% discount code that I used to buy my niece some Jellycats she wanted for Christmas, it made it a bit easier to swallow, hope it helps:

Has anyone done the Selfridges fish and chips experience? We've booked for my daughter for Saturday. I may need to sell a kidney 🤦‍♀️🤣

okayhescereal · 21/11/2024 11:05

Honestly had no idea they were worth so much! We've been gifted a few over the years. My DC aren't so bothered about cuddlys so most of them either got regifted or went to the charity shop. Someone had a lucky day!!

MugPlate · 21/11/2024 15:12

Without UK businesses, like Jellycat, (employing UK staff and paying UK tax), and coming up with new ideas, the copies won’t have fresh products to rip off.

There’s a whole infrastructure behind the headline price, and no I don’t work for them 😆but we often see threads aghast at the cost of a professional birthday cake etc. Innovation is valuable.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 21/11/2024 16:52

I went in Fenwick last week and I was shocked to see even the £12/13 jellycats were security tagged - cashier they have people trying to steal them every day.

KeepYaHeadUp · 21/11/2024 16:57

Aah I agree but I love them. The most ridiculous and inanimate the better. I especially enjoyed the nail varnish
