To think JellyCats cost a ridiculous amount..

Some examples, see pictures.

These are listed on vinted.

One seller wants £32 for a small plush croissant. 67 people have 'favourited' it.

Another wants £30 for an equally small slice of pizza, or whatever it was.

They sell well.

DD wants the birthday cake one, that's also £30.

AIBU to think they are hugely overpriced? What's so special about them that makes them cost triple what you'd pay for other plush toys?!

No idea why anyone would pay more for second hand than new!

It's bizarre, isn't it? My daughter has the croissant one on her Christmas list.

BarberBealShaw · 21/10/2024 07:18

They all look the same. You've bought one, you've bought them all. And they're too popular, kids have identical toys. I don't remember ever going round a friend's house and seeing anyone with the same stuffed toys as me. Dolls, yes, but not soft toys. Don't parents want them to be special? I went to a teddy bear picnic and most kids either had the Jellycat Bartholomew bear or a Winnie the Pooh.

wiesowarum · 21/10/2024 07:23

Jellycat toys are pricey, but tbh I would rather myself or my child have one genuine Jellycat that 5 cheap knock offs from a chinese website. I feel that way about most things though. I also agree that Squishmallows are much nicer/better.

anotherside · 21/10/2024 07:27

People (including kids) like them because they’re expensive. Put the cake, burger and croissant in a 3 for £20 bundle in your local Tesco instead of the posh shops and you’d have very few takers.

Stretchedresources · 21/10/2024 07:30

Teen DD has the cappuccino and croissant. They're adorable 😳.
I want the dinky tomatoes.

Ireolu · 21/10/2024 07:31

You can get them form selfridges for about 20 quid. So more than they are worth but not thousands. Got DC a dragon key chain for her birthday this year. Soft and cute.

So you’re happy for Chinese people to manufacture them from fluffy guts to grin. But God forbid something basically identical without the ludicrous price tag appears on a Chinese website. Hmmm.

piscofrisco · 21/10/2024 07:33

I had to hit a repellent one for dd when she lost her special one. 35 quid for a tiny bunny. WTF??

TenWeeCaramelJoeys · 21/10/2024 07:40

I used to be fed up every time we came home from IKEA with a bloody 2ft stuffed pencil (with a 6ft label🤣) or a giant stalk of broccoli or a plushy clock. But at least they were cheap! DS2 insisted on a giant 5ft teddy from Smyths one year. It basically allowed him to share the bed with it. I thought £40 was ridiculous for a soft toy, but now I reckon it was pretty good value. Certainly compared to those Jellycat toys😬

I’ve got boxes of Beanie Babies that sold for these types of prices years ago. They are worth a couple of quid now if you are lucky.

I’ve not seen these before but they seem very similar as collectibles. Maybe if you wait ten years they will be available by the bagful for a fiver. 😁

Jellycat has always been this way. Beanie babies tried to follow them and they not as cuddly....my daughter on a mission to get a bunny in every colour of the rainbow...I check every charity shop I visit

Mine (11) has the cappuccino key ring.

Sandandsea123 · 21/10/2024 07:44

They are crazy money! My daughter is 14 and we’ve always brought her them since a newborn, she still sleeps with her favourite she was given when she was born and she has many (many) all over her room. They have deff got more expensive recently! There used to be a whole shop dedicated to Jelly Cat in my town, it was amazing but closed down because not enough sales… the people were amazing and I just wish they’d hung on long enough for this recent explosion of popularity and they’d be laughing!!

Gowlett · 21/10/2024 07:45

Agree with BBS, they all look the same to me!

No way I’d be paying for Jellycat…

Tiredmomma86 · 21/10/2024 07:59

I agree that they cost a fortune, however, it was my son’s jellycat that finally got him to sleep soundly in his own cot rather than sprawled all over me so to me it’s priceless. I bought him a second recently as his first is so weathered lol (nibbled threadbare ears-[rabbit] and such rough fur from all the washing) but his first is his number one! I personally dont get the food items ones but to each their own

I genuinely don't understand why adults buy these.

3 of us work friends buy each other Jellycat amuseables for each other's birthdays. Whoever's birthday it is the other 2 buy one of the £25 - £30 ones and it's lovely! My cup of cappuccino sits on my desk and is just a cute thing. My DD(22) l treats herself to them as well.

Jellycats aren't a new thing, I bought DD a cat when she was a toddler, so more than 20 years ago and cheap knock-offs are never the same!

Eh?

That poster was highlighting the hypocrisy of refusing to buy JellyCat dupes on cheaper Chinese websites, when the official JellyCats are made in China too.

I have just joined a jellycat fb group. Some
People go mad for them. The peach seems to be the must have one of the moment which seems to result in a lot of fakes being sold on Vinted / dodgy websites.

We have a few of the food ones - going to the patisserie in Paris next month so my daughter wants one from there.

I also have a large octopus, it's just so soft and the legs are lovely!

We went to the Patisserie in the summer. It was the only thing my niece and nephew wanted to do in Paris Grin. I was a bit sceptical but it was actually really lovely. The guy who served us was so jolly and really made it special. Don’t forget to go up on the roof terrace at the Galaries Lafayette, the view from there is gorgeous.

The poster thought they were highlighting hypocrisy. They weren't, it's not just which country they're made in - the designs on these sites are often knock off or stolen, not just Jellycats. They're also made more cheaply and many cheap copies do use inferior, if not dangerous, materials.

DS has a jellycat dinosaur he's had from birth, what he doesn't know is we've got a spare in the wardrobe because for a while he couldn't/wouldn't sleep without it and I was terrified I'd lose it as he was one for throwing stuff from the pram!

My DD had a Jellycat teddy from birth - we had 3 of them that we used to rotate! She discovered them all when she was about 10. Ten years on they’re still going strong.

I agree Jellycat are expensive but they’re beautifully made. And so cheery!

No idea why anyone would pay more for second hand than new!

Perhaps because the particular one they like is discontinued but they still want it?

wiesowarum · 21/10/2024 08:15

People will be hoping they become the next beanie baby phenomenon. They also sold for high prices as people viewed them as collector items whixh would continue to rise in value - only theu didn't.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/style/bursting-the-beanie-baby-bubble

Jellycats are a lot nicer and softer than BB.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 21/10/2024 08:23

@ColonelRhubarbBikini

Do you need to book? I didn't see anything but I know the London one you do. Yes that and Eiffel Tower is only thing on her list in Paris itself (also doing Disney) she hates museums and anything historical.

We saw the diner in NY last October but didn't buy - I do think the cakes are a little cuter than the burgers though.

Yes someone else told me about the roof terrace so that's on my list.

They have amazing copies on Temu & Ali Express. And most of them are actually good quality. Thats if your kids don't mind not having the actual jellycat tag on it.
I've got the pain au chocolate one. They really are cute. But I agree, ridiculously priced

Please watch out for Temu. I know what's done is done and the prices are tempting but they are cheap for a reason, not just because they are making the same stuff for big brands and selling identical copies without the branding.

Aside from ethical.concerns about forced labour, there is some very concerning information out there about them:

"Separately, Toy Industries of Europe (TIE) bought 19 toys from TEMU in February and found that none of the toys fully complied with EU legislation. 18 posed a real safety risk for children, with hazards including cutting, blockage, choking, strangulation and chemical danger."
