There's something weird going on in my house

1000 replies

horseHorseHorse · 19/10/2024 23:31

For the last couple of weeks I've been noticing lights on when I come in when I'm 100% sure I've turned them off. Milk out on the side when I'm sure it's been put away. Stuff moved around but not in an obvious way, just a "huh, I could have sworn I left that somewhere else."

Put it down to rushed mornings and my cats playing with stuff.

Been out most of the day, just went into the upstairs bathroom for the first time since this morning and there's blood on the loo tank. Thought it could have come from a cat bringing something in but the door has been closed all day, and it's on the third floor so it's not like they could have got in and out like that. Windows have been closed too.

I have already bought carbon monoxide detectors in addition to the wired in ones. They're all over the house but haven't picked anything up.

Have a loft but the hatch is tiny and doesn't seem to have been disturbed.

Have an internal camera which shows the front door and hall - no activity though it did show my dog going bonkers barking at something outside a couple of times today (though the external camera isn't up yet so I couldn't see what)

Only direct family have keys and they wouldn't do stuff like this. Will be changing the locks tomorrow!

I'm properly creeped out ATM! Husband will be back shortly from work thank god! I'm in the bedroom with the door wedged shut for the moment!

Please someone give me a rational explanation!

Did the police say anything?

You're sharing a somewhat extreme story. I'm not sure what the purpose was, other than to link it to the OP's experience?.

It’s a chat forum ffs. You are not the chat forum police.

Elzzup · 20/10/2024 14:32

I mean, if this was me I wouldn't be worried at all, I would just think either I am being forgetful or my sister was and the marks on the cistern are from insects. I wouldn't have given it a second thought. Feels like a big deal to make over something tiny. Maybe get a memory check at the gp if you are worried.

Yeah by being rude to other people. Nice contribution.

KateDelRick · 20/10/2024 14:37

Anyway, some of this is quite bizarre, and I think some people are trying to alarm you with...stories. So I'm off, but I hope you're ok, OP.
At least the police have been.
Check your cats! Good luck 👍

I think you started it with your response.
I was just questioning that story.
You used the "ffs".
Ciao.

cabbageking · 20/10/2024 14:39

I would be checking the cat's ears for ear mites as when they irritate them and they scratch their ears, it makes a similar blood splatter pattern

TheQueeen · 20/10/2024 14:40

When a cat sits in a wet place and they have flea dirt on them, this is what happens. I’ll post a few more pics

TwigletsAndRadishes · 20/10/2024 14:42

Ca has brought in a mouse which has disappeared down some gap in the pipework or behind the bath/sink and is now running around your bathroom looking for a way out. Or cat could have a tiny cut on its paw and the blood got there earlier, before you shut the bathroom door, but you didn't notice because you were rushing off to work.

Lights can come on and off at random if there is faulty wiring. It has happened to me when we had a leak in the roof letting rainwater settle in the roof void somewhere. It had messed with the electrics on the recessed downlighters.

The milk and other things, well that's just part of life. Like walking into a room anf forgetting why you are there. You think you put something away or in a specific place, but you are mistaken.

Cattery · 20/10/2024 14:45

I think it could be the ghosts of tiny mice tip toeing on the top of the toilet after having put the lights on to see where the milk was

Opentooffers · 20/10/2024 14:51

You've been in your house 4 years, and lived with your ex for part if that. So I'd guess you haven't been married all that long. Are you confident that you know your DH well? It's not unknown for the spouse to be the gaslighter, in fact, that's where the term comes from and lights going on and off was exactly the situation in the film that coined the term.
You've married a man who now lives in your home, did he come with a similar level of assets to you, or has he gained half of yours just by marriage?
The dots of blood on the cistern is a classic pattern that you would get from a cat sitting on it ( which they do to cool down). Some flea treatments are less effective than others, anything bought from shops tends not to work, only ones from the vet seem to I've found.
Not outside the realms of possibility that your DH could be nipping back during his work day. Is it unusual for him to be later back from work? I note he came home later than expected when you got the police involved, maybe made time up for nipping off earlier in the day, or avoiding the police visit?
Basically, if it's not you, it's most likely him. But only you know your relationship dynamics and how possible that is.

Ohlaylaylayla · 20/10/2024 15:13

You left the milk out and the cat has fleas h2h

phoning the fucking police, give me strength.

This! It's either the husband or the sister involved, nothing mysterious about whole thing.

Insects don’t make that much mess, unless they’ve been left for months! You are minimising the OP’s experience- clearly it IS a big deal and certainly not tiny.
OP - please come back and enlighten us if you ever find out what’s been going on.

TeatimeForTheSoul · 20/10/2024 15:18

horseHorseHorse · 20/10/2024 13:32

Thank you for the explanation.

She doesn't drink milk because she's been vegan for 20 odd years.

Sorry, incorrect assumption on my part.

TartfulRidesAgain2 · 20/10/2024 15:20

Ooooookay so the husband is having an affair, leaving nosebleeds on the back of the toilet, sneaking home from work and lying about it and gaslighting the OP. This is surreal. Are some of these replies serious?😳

TeatimeForTheSoul · 20/10/2024 15:22

RainbowZebraWarrior · 20/10/2024 13:33

Oh for God's sake it was a joke.

Made before the OP added that her sister was ND.

And I'm Autistic, so don't spout at me about the various crappy health comorbidities I know more than enough about myself thank you.

Please be reassured I was referring to OPs DS re the topic of this thread. No reason to see you in this comment.
’Joking’ about sex trafficking and rape excuses in reference to not drinking milk can be highly offensive to some.

BluebirdBoogie · 20/10/2024 15:22

I think the milk thing/lights being on are probably just human error and the marks on the cistern are unconnected (maybe insects as others have said).

The fact that your sister comes in every day means it would be unlikely that anyone would chance being in the house.

I think you've whipped yourself up a bit and there's actually nothing weird going on.

Getting cameras and changing locks is a good idea for your peace of mind though. I'm sure nothing more will happen now.

Aquamarineeyes · 20/10/2024 15:22

@Opentooffers That's fairly chilling. She does say though that they both work for the same small company and he was definitely at work. But if stuff is being moved then somebody must be moving it. I think it is much more likely to be a human than a poltergeist. I'd have locks changed and get somebody up to look in the attic.

Other than that - whose else had key or access to the keys? Could a tradesman, for example, who had access to the house have taken a copy? My money though would be on the ex you chucked out. He might have given you the key back but there would have been nothing to stop him having a copy made before he handed it back.

MrsGarethSouthgate · 20/10/2024 15:23

If you can see on the internal camera that your sister doesn’t touch the milk, why can you not see what does happen to it?

What?? That doesnt make any sense. You tagged me!

This thread has gone past batshit levels now. I'm out.

Sunshine1500 · 20/10/2024 15:31

You have a dog, cats, a husband and sister that all come and go in your house and also security cameras. I don’t think you should worry yet or need police. It’s hopefully just due to pets and people coming and going.
