There's something weird going on in my house

horseHorseHorse · 19/10/2024 23:31

For the last couple of weeks I've been noticing lights on when I come in when I'm 100% sure I've turned them off. Milk out on the side when I'm sure it's been put away. Stuff moved around but not in an obvious way, just a "huh, I could have sworn I left that somewhere else."

Put it down to rushed mornings and my cats playing with stuff.

Been out most of the day, just went into the upstairs bathroom for the first time since this morning and there's blood on the loo tank. Thought it could have come from a cat bringing something in but the door has been closed all day, and it's on the third floor so it's not like they could have got in and out like that. Windows have been closed too.

I have already bought carbon monoxide detectors in addition to the wired in ones. They're all over the house but haven't picked anything up.

Have a loft but the hatch is tiny and doesn't seem to have been disturbed.

Have an internal camera which shows the front door and hall - no activity though it did show my dog going bonkers barking at something outside a couple of times today (though the external camera isn't up yet so I couldn't see what)

Only direct family have keys and they wouldn't do stuff like this. Will be changing the locks tomorrow!

I'm properly creeped out ATM! Husband will be back shortly from work thank god! I'm in the bedroom with the door wedged shut for the moment!

Please someone give me a rational explanation!

Is it definitely blood? It looks a bit like residue from bugs/insects. Not exactly sure what it is they leave if it is droppings or castings but we get this in our house.
Obviously that doesn't explain the milk or the lights.
Do you have a dog walker?

Those little black/brown specks often found on window sills is usually spider poop.

It's not just the blood flecks. It's lights being on when I'm sure I've turned them off, stuff being moved around or going missing, stuff being left out of the fridge when I'm sure it's been put away. It's all a bit weird and unusual and I was genuinely scared last night!

I am sorry that you feel scared. However, apart from the blood flecks, there's nothing of substance, certainly not to alert the police. People often leave things out of the fridge, leave lights on or move items without remembering. There is nothing stolen or destroyed, is there?
Maybe check out the cats for scratches or fleas and get an electrician to check your house wiring, but other than that, I can't see a problem.

OP said that in order to check the loft, a ladder would be needed and they did not have one on the premises. So I am assuming the loft is not fitted with a sliding two or three section drop-down loft ladder or a concertina type loft ladder.

If the loft is not fitted with a loft ladder, if someone was inside the loft they could feasibly open the loft hatch from the inside and lower themselves down to the landing.

However, once on the landing, I would think it would be quite difficult to haul yourself back into a loft without something on the landing to stand on, like a chair, and then remove whatever you had used to stand on once you were back through the loft hatch.

I'd be curious to know how readers who were suggesting that someone might be occupying the loft was getting up and down from the loft when there was no loft ladder (and if there were one, it would need to be one that was easily retractable from above and the hatch would need to be able to be closed from above, too).

Rope ladder

Ghostbusters..

KateDelRick · 20/10/2024 14:08

I think you should take comfort from the fact that if it was an intruder/someone with malicious intent, more activity would be apparent other than that which you have described.

PuppyMonkey · 20/10/2024 14:11

The police came at 5am? Shock

LastNight1Dreamt1WentToManderleyAgain · 20/10/2024 14:13

It might be worth checking with your GP as some neurological conditions can manifest like this: losing time or forgetting. I hope you're OK.

Omg my car years ago used to leave those marks in the bath. Had totally forgotten until I saw that and was only in a flat we lived in not at a different house. I don't think it was blood. Is it more orange blood coloured?

Bloody hell, what sort of car did you have?!

ClockworkDisaster · 20/10/2024 14:14

Nothing worse than feeling scared in your own home.

Do you have any smart light bulbs that can be switched on via WiFi? Or check that no one has changed normal bulbs for them as a practical joke, especially as we are getting towards Halloween. I can turn one of my
lights on from anywhere in the world so can be done without getting into the house.

Hope you get this sorted OP.

I’ve had two similar situations.
The first where things were moved / toilet seat changed position during the day, son felt someone touch him in the middle of the night but nothing found and no explanations. I moved after 6 months of this (but was renting at that property so easier to do!).

The second was a similar situation but without my son feeling someone had touched him. It turned out my ex had broken into my house and was living in my loft without my knowledge. He would come
down when I’d left for work, shower, eat, chill etc and go back up before I returned from work.

He was found as I went away with my children on holiday, and my Nan was keeping an eye on my house whilst away. When she was checking all was ok in the rooms, discovered him asleep in my bed! 🙄 She got him out, called the police and an injunction was put in place. The officer had said he’d never seen anything like it in his 30 plus years as an officer… mind you, this was 12 years ago now!!

Sending hugs xx

Good god, did he have mh issues?!

BabyOwlinthePlumeria · 20/10/2024 14:17

My dm had this happen to her years ago when she lived in Italy. Swore someone was coming in the house when she was gone. Df said she must be crazy until he came home early one day and found the landlord cooking noodles in the kitchen and doing his washing

dizzydizzydizzy · 20/10/2024 14:19

All very weird. I hope you get to the bottom of the mystery.

Rope ladder

There is no rope ladder or anywhere to attach one!

No just standard bulbs and switches.

Have you spoken to your neighbours op to see if they've noticed anything amiss around your house or at theirs? Might be good to put it on their agenda?

There's none of that happening here. Not even a hint.

Missymoo100 · 20/10/2024 14:24

OP - can you be sure the top of the cistern was clean before you had closed the door? It could be that you had just missed it.
looking at it I can see bits of fluff/hair so looks like it would be from the cat. Some cats have brown tears/drool that leaves marks like that- that’s what it looks like, that or flea dirt.

LivinInYourBigGlassHouseWithAView · 20/10/2024 14:24

Hope nothing else strange happens, OP x

pimplebum · 20/10/2024 14:27

We have caterpillars every year and when they burst out of their chrysalises they deposit. That amount of “blood” like splatters
a moth or butterfly could have hatched and flapped in your sink then hidden again ??

an insect with piles could have pooed in your sink and scuttled off

I think calling the police is a tad extreme

KateDelRick · 20/10/2024 14:29

I'm very impressed that the police came at 5am on the basis of this.

You're sharing a somewhat extreme story. I'm not sure what the purpose was, other than to link it to the OP's experience?.
