There's something weird going on in my house

1000 replies

horseHorseHorse · 19/10/2024 23:31

For the last couple of weeks I've been noticing lights on when I come in when I'm 100% sure I've turned them off. Milk out on the side when I'm sure it's been put away. Stuff moved around but not in an obvious way, just a "huh, I could have sworn I left that somewhere else."

Put it down to rushed mornings and my cats playing with stuff.

Been out most of the day, just went into the upstairs bathroom for the first time since this morning and there's blood on the loo tank. Thought it could have come from a cat bringing something in but the door has been closed all day, and it's on the third floor so it's not like they could have got in and out like that. Windows have been closed too.

I have already bought carbon monoxide detectors in addition to the wired in ones. They're all over the house but haven't picked anything up.

Have a loft but the hatch is tiny and doesn't seem to have been disturbed.

Have an internal camera which shows the front door and hall - no activity though it did show my dog going bonkers barking at something outside a couple of times today (though the external camera isn't up yet so I couldn't see what)

Only direct family have keys and they wouldn't do stuff like this. Will be changing the locks tomorrow!

I'm properly creeped out ATM! Husband will be back shortly from work thank god! I'm in the bedroom with the door wedged shut for the moment!

Please someone give me a rational explanation!

'No reason to see you in this comment'
What?? That doesnt make any sense. You tagged me!

This thread has gone past batshit levels now. I'm out.

And I'm Autistic, so don't spout at me about the various crappy health comorbidities I know more than enough about myself thank you.

My response about allergies was in relevance to the OPs DS being ND ie nothing about your ND as your ND was not known so, lacking psychic abilities, I could not possibly aim to teach you about your ND

BreatheAndFocus · 20/10/2024 15:33

If someone was using your house when you were out (and to be clear, I don’t think they are), then they’re hardly going to leave lights on and the milk out and alert you so you can end their little jig!

I think you’re linking unrelated things and assuming they’re related to an imaginary intruder. Re the lights - could your sister have left them on? Could the cats be knocking them? Did your sister remove the milk from the fridge to reach the cat food/something, then forget to put it back in again?

And yes, the cistern blood looks like fleas. They’re not always easy to see on cats.

ItsAnotherDayonPlanetEarth · 20/10/2024 15:37

Definitely looks like flea dirt unfortunately. Comb your cats over a piece of wet kitchen roll, any flea dirt will turn red when it's mixed with water, due to the blood in it. It may have not been visible until condensation formed when you were out.

You made an assumption about the reasons for the DS not drinking milk.

You made an assumption that I know nothing about ND and also tagged me in it. ("RZW doesn't seem to know about the link..")

Maybe think about that.

I'm not engaging with you further.

Jigsawpuzzled · 20/10/2024 15:40

I agree this looks like some kind of insect or spider dirt. My cat is treated regularly for fleas as she's super allergic but we have been back at the vet this week again as she still picks them up (always this time of year, super annoying) and it looks just like this but so do spiders hanging out above the cistern at night tbh

Isis1981uk · 20/10/2024 15:44

Wasn't there a case in the news like this where a woman kept noticing odd things & finding notes around the house warning her of danger. It transpired that her boiler was leaking & she was suffering from low-level carbon monoxide poisoning, and doing things but forgetting she'd done them. Might be worth getting your boiler checked just in case! EDIT: Ignore this, I just saw that you'd checked the CO2!

CherieBabySpliffUp · 20/10/2024 15:44

Did you check the bath panel? I'm sure I've seen a film where the intruder was hiding under the bath Grin

YarkYark · 20/10/2024 15:50

My mind boggles at the type of houses people have (or imagine others have) where people could live in the roof space and the owners don't realise it. If somebody was "living" in our roof we'd know it in 2 minutes, unless they literally lay flat and didn't move an inch. I recall OP said it was a fairly new build house? In which case, no way.

Freakingfreaky · 20/10/2024 15:53

Take a photo of each room as you leave the house, if you think things have moved when you get home, check the photos.

Not sure what to suggest if things have moved....I know I'd be packing up and moving 😂
( Think I watch too many horror films 😂)

MightSoundCrassButItsFactual · 20/10/2024 16:10

ok, so your sister who is ND comes daily

LivelyMintViper · 20/10/2024 16:10

We are also having strange goings-on. Not as creepy as yours but equally mystifying. Things just tend to go missing. Most recently tongs. Just assumed I'd put them down somewhere so bought a second pair 2 Days later they had gone. Irritating because we are having a barbecue so went out and bought the third pair. A day later they have gone.

fragrantdisregard · 20/10/2024 16:17

@LivelyMintViper In my imagination, the multiple pairs of missing tongs will end up being explained this way: Someone in the house thinks they know Where Tongs Should Go and is repeatedly putting them there, meanwhile wondering why another person in the house keeps buying more tongs. When the two finally discuss it, hilarity ensues as the Tong-Mover reveals a drawer bursting with tongs.

Or you have a ghost who in life was tormented by barbecue smoke on laundry days and refuses to have the things in the house.

YarkYark · 20/10/2024 16:21

Interesting (and excuse the derail for a moment). That report, published in 2012 is a repeat of an article published in the Express and Star (a local paper, I guess) and others on June 8th 2008. That original article concludes:

Police said today nothing had been found.
Det Ch Insp Danny Long, of West Bromwich Police said: "There have been searches.
"The searches were related to someone who thought that there were families living in the roof spaces in some of the houses. We have been looking into the suggestions but there doesn't appear to be anything to support the reports. We carried out a thorough search but there was no-one there and nothing to suggest that there had been."

Which the ever relaible Standard unfortunately forgot to include in their plagiarised article.

Naunet · 20/10/2024 16:31

So your sister comes every day, easily explaining the lights (really should have mentioned that in your OP), the milk you could have left out, and you’re not even sure about it, so the only real mystery is the spots in the cistern, which could be sliders or fleas or an injured mouse. There also seems to be at least one hair on it, which implies either you didn’t clean it and are misremembering, or it was the cat, and you didn’t leave the door shut.

Haveacuppaandwaitforthistoblowover · 20/10/2024 16:34

Haven't RTFT (sorry) but has it been suggested to go out and watch your house? You and DH one watches the back and one the front? (Take the dog with you too) I'd be going bat shit with this! Also leave something at the back door which can be knocked over (or window) leave a dot under it and if it's moved you will know!

OP said that in order to check the loft, a ladder would be needed and they did not have one on the premises. So I am assuming the loft is not fitted with a sliding two or three section drop-down loft ladder or a concertina type loft ladder.

If the loft is not fitted with a loft ladder, if someone was inside the loft they could feasibly open the loft hatch from the inside and lower themselves down to the landing.

However, once on the landing, I would think it would be quite difficult to haul yourself back into a loft without something on the landing to stand on, like a chair, and then remove whatever you had used to stand on once you were back through the loft hatch.

I'd be curious to know how readers who were suggesting that someone might be occupying the loft was getting up and down from the loft when there was no loft ladder (and if there were one, it would need to be one that was easily retractable from above and the hatch would need to be able to be closed from above, too).

A ladder inside the loft, pop it out when you use it, leave it in place, pull back up when you go back into the loft.

And now I'll read the rest of this thread to find a suitable ending, or not.

Could you gave a UTI? I read something recently about untreated UTI’s affecting mental health; could you be forgetting things?

I hope you do an update as it seems people are finding this is a puzzle. It sounds scary to handle.

wellington77 · 20/10/2024 17:04

when my cat had fleas this happened to me. He likes hanging out at the sink and the flea poo ( black dots ) sorry to be gross, after a while , with a bit of water on them would go red from essentially the fact it’s cat blood. Could be this? Have you thought about memory loss issues too? - sorry don’t want to upset you

Surprise50 · 20/10/2024 17:12

Some awful responses here 🤷🏻‍♀️
OP as others have said, if everything is on camera, surely you can see at least what happened to the milk?
