Kylian Mbappe accused of rape - AIBU to be a bit shocked

Mbappe has been accused of raping a woman in a hotel in Sweden.

In Sweden they are confirming it is definitely him and they've reported on it because they feel it's in the public interest. The woman went to get medical attention and reported the incident straight after. AIBU to be a bit shocked if true? I know everyone will say what do you expect and don't look up to footballers etc, but I'm a woman who enjoys watching football and it's so disheartening how many footballers end up assaulting women. I thought Mbappe was maybe one of the good ones. Hope it's not true, but if it is, that there will be justice for the victim. Apparently Sweden has some of the best laws regarding rape on the planet, so that is encouraging at least.

Kylian Mbappé reacts with fury at Swedish reports of rape claim

Swedish prosecutors say a rape investigation had been opened in Stockholm without mentioning Kylian Mbappé, following media reports that the France captain and Real Madrid star was the suspect

You're shocked that a man with status, power and money is capable of raping a woman?

I'm not sure why you'd be shocked, he's a top-level footballer. The surprise comes when one goes through their entire life without being found to be a rapist/child abuser/domestic abuser/love cheat or various other things. Power and status brings opportunity to abuse. Footballers are not in a position of power and of having status because of any inherent "goodness" of character, they are people - often with less than ideal backgrounds - who have better than average ability at kicking a ball about.

Obviously innocent until proven guilty.

Tiswa · 16/10/2024 10:29

It is shocking actually that at this stage he was named by the press - at this stage only an allegation has been made rather than any form of trial (Mandy/Greenwood/Adam Johnson etc were all named after charges were brought I think) because he is now being tried before even being charged

as for believing it who knows I have no evidence in front of me

MonsteraMama · 16/10/2024 10:32

Sadly I'm never really shocked or surprised when another rape or sexual assault or nonce story comes out about a celebrity. I don't think there's many celebrities I'd respond with anything other than weary resignation to anymore.

elQuintoConyo · 16/10/2024 10:32

Not surprised in the fucking least, no, Who would be?

No, I'm a bit shocked that Mbappe is being accused of rape. I never said I find it shocking that there are powerful men who rape women. Just that as a woman who loves football, I get tired of the amount of abuse committed by footballers and pegged Mbappe as perhaps a decent human being? There's a difference between thinking something is possible and automatically assuming all men with money are rapists.

Yes, that was also quite shocking to me. They say it was in the public interest, but I'm not sure what the norm is over there.

I wouldn't classify Mbappe as a decent human being, regardless of his alleged sexual activities.

Edited

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of elite sportsmen who have never raped someone.

honeygoldensyrup · 16/10/2024 10:40

I think that it's useful to remember that professional footballers are simply people who love and are talented at football and for multiple reasons have had the opportunity to progress to become famous.

The fact that they are now household names says nothing about who they are as people and so we shouldn't be surprised if they are charged with something illegal, whatever it may be.

We might have thought that seeing as they have what many would class as the dream life means that they should be less likely to throw it away, however I don't think it works like that.

Alleged rapists are named to encourage any other potential victims to come forward, in the UK at least. This started years ago when reporting was rape was even less common than it is now. For victims, knowing you are not the only one, is a huge impetus to report to police.

The whole visit was really odd actually. He came to Stockholm for a night went to a nightclub then flew back the next day. There was no official reason for him to come to Stockholm as far as the press is aware. Suddenly he was just papped leaving a club, the next morning the police are at his hotel checking his room.

it's true though that the rape laws in Sweden are excellent although the sentences are too short. A man was just sentenced for rape against children after having coerced them to show their bodies over the internet, so he was never physically near the children but it was still considered rape. I don't know if that's the same in the UK but I was surprised that it was considered rape.

Why @ilovesooty? I don't know much about him, so curious.

Referring to women as "females" is usually a telltale sign that someone is a raging misogynist especially when they refer to men as men rather than "males". Why do you feel the need to dehumanise women?

As for "crying rape", the number of false rape allegations made is tiny.

Sigh. Although the statistics are difficult to calculate for many reasons, it is very rare. Unlike rape.

This.

Overpaid wankers who think they can force themselves on women and girls just because they excel at football, they think they're untouchable.
